One of the greatest international screen stars of all time, Sydow was not only a titanic screen presence, but he could do everything from Seventh Seal to Strange Brew to Flash Gordon. His versatility, humility, professionalism, and humor along with his gravitas and deep, rich baritone helped him transition from Swedish cinema's leading man to international charactor actor, especially in genre fare. It was a treat to see him pop up in even the pulpiest of schlock like Judge Dredd and own his time on screen.
Check out companion films The Emigrants and The New Land for one of his greatest performances.
Oh man! I thought I was the only one who liked that movie.

I always thought that he would've been great had he been cast as Gandalf in the LOTR films, and even Ian McKellen once said so himself. I can totally hear him forcefully yelling "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"
In any case, I think panamaniac said it well: he was a towering presence. RIP, Father Merrin.

From "The Seventh Seal" to "The Simpsons" . . . the man had an amazing body of work and an amazing range of talent.
