Life would be better if there were more people like him...

Jimmy Carter Put Solar Panels on His Farmland and They're Now Powering Half of His Georgia Hometown
Quote:
While President Jimmy Carter was in the White House, he championed new energy and became the first president to use solar panels to power portions of the building. That legacy has continued decades later and in a place much closer to Carter’s home — literally: Since 2017, the nation’s 39th president has used 10 acres of his farmland to power most of his hometown in Plains, Georgia.

Where the famed peanut-farming president used to grow crops like nuts and soybeans, 3,852 solar panels now stand to capture the Georgia sunlight, providing more than 50 percent of the small town’s energy.

The former president told the Sierra Club in 2017, soon after the panels were installed, that on a good day that they could provide 1.3 megawatts — or 1.3 million watts. According to the U.S. government, one megawatt will provide enough energy to power 400-900 homes (though watts harnessed by solar panels provides a little less).

I saw a snippet of Louis Farrakhan of all folks giving a backhanded compliment to Jimmy. He said, "Obama may have to be like Jimmy Carter...a better post-president than president." Stgh to that effect.

I have a documentary on Carter that was excellent, produced in 06 iirc, had tons of Jimmy content. Guy (and Rosalyn) both sharp as razors. Jimmy had the gift of gab like Bill Clinton and other Democrats. The gift that Repub Presidents lack in a big way, at least the modern ones. Carter could think on his feet and was not fooled or tricked by any nitwit journalist trying to get some comment to make him seem like he was contradicting his past premises. Beyond that, he's a warm man, beloved. They showed him walking thru an airport and everyone lit up, saying, "Hi, Mr. President!..." When he boarded a plane (coach!), got the same treatment. He went to every single person and shook their hands and only a single grouse didn't accept. Everyone else's faces lit up and were smiling. People of all backgrounds and appearances. And he even gave Tony Montana his human rights.

Farrakhan can take a long walk off a short pier.

Fun anecdote! Carter always did seem too good of a human being to be president in some ways.

First, no shts given re: Olympics. If that's one of his top 4 problems, he did stupendously well if you compare that to Dubya/Trump bimbo type Repubs.

The Iran crisis. I presume you're referring to the failed mission to rescue the hostages, Op Eagle Claw. What most people don't know is that the helicopter and plane crashed after the mission had been aborted due to sandstorms and low visibility. And that was in the US's nascent involvement in special ops -- in Eagle Claw the various entities didn't work cohesively a la 9/11 and the CIA/FBI. Only option he had was a very cumbersome one with so many things that needed to go right that it tested the limits of Murphy's Law. But Carter followed direction of military advisers to abort. No matter what, he stood in front of the American people and took the failure as his own. Imagine that...accepting your own human fallibility. You think that would happen w/ a President nowadays?

Louis can walk on water, what do you mean?

I agree. He did stuff that was eyerolling such as turning the thermostat down at the White House and not offering up buffets for Congressional fatbodies like Tipp O'Neill. Democrat lawmakers weren't even pleased by him. He was not swayed into doing things that his people thought would improve his image. He was Little House On The Prairie level of Old Skool.

Guess which candidate favored the Ayatollah Khomeini regime which took the US hostages?

Supported Lester Maddox as governor of Georgia instead of Bo Callaway. So no.

I'm too young to remember his presidency but from what I have read, yeah not the best even tho' he meant well. But wonderful human being IMO.

Carter is a relic of another time. A deeply religious southern conservative who developed enlightened, tolerant views about people through the application of his religion, and became left of center, but not terribly progressive. He was an inefficient and ineffective politician at a time when a lot of things that weren't in his control were savaging the country, and he was far too honest for his own good. And since his time in office he has been about peace and doing charity work. I, as an atheist, salute his faith. One of the minority who use it as a salve and not a cudgel.

Well said, I love that man.

The left, typically noted for its tolerance, would do well to follow this example.
