If I hear one more idiot here in Florida say things like “how is it we opened theme parks, restaurants, stores and protested safely but we you people are against opening schools?”

I’d say it’s pretty frigging obvious we DIDN’T open any of those places safely.

They also love to point to other countries opening schools safely. It’s absurd to compare other countries to the US, especially to Florida in particular. Florida has had more positive cases in the past week than many of those countries have had during the entire pandemic.....combined! Finland is a popular one they mention. Finland has had fewer cases total than Florida had today alone!

There are multiple threads with stuff like this on my Nextdoor. I’ve been biting my tongue to not reply to this stuff.

It's very frustrating watching the country go down the tubes and there's nothing being done by Repuklicans to stop it.

They way I see it, our salvation lies in voting booths and vote by mail. I'm hoping vote by mail will be enacted for the coming election. Those who've been thwarted at the polls will be able to sit in their lazy boys and vote from the comfort of home.

Americans may not think of themselves as an “empire,” but much of the world does. The average age of empires, according to a specialist on the subject, the late Sir John Bagot Glubb, is 250 years. After that, empires always die, often slowly but overwhelmingly from overreaching in the search for power.

The America of 1776 will reach its 250th year in 2026.

The average age of an empire? A mere 250 years

This country (empire), founded on theft of land, slavery, and the killing of native peoples, is on its way to feeling the karmic effects of its odious acts.

The Nazis (Germany) paid a price for their atrocities, and I think this country will, too...for their own atrocities...framed as patriotism, free enterprise, and Uhmurrican Greatness.

One of the disturbing things about the current state of the pandemic that I have seen discussed here mush is this asinine idea of returning to professional sports.

With maybe the sole exception of golf, where the nature of the sport almost inherently involves social distancing (and to a lesser degree, tennis), the idea of having players return to the fields and courts is asinine and like almost all of the foolish decisions being made the days is purely motivated by the drive to make money. I am aware that professional sports are a business that needs revenue to survive. But to ask athletes (even those that say they want to play) to place their lives in danger (and either stay away from their families or place their families in danger as well) simply to make money is gravely irresponsible.

There isn't a sport that has returned to some degree of resumption or practice where there haven't been infections. And it is preposterous to think there won't be more. And in sports where there is direct body to body contact like football and basketball? There are no precautions in the world that are going to completely prevent some participants from contracting the virus.

I'm a big fan of sports and consuming them is a large part of my life, and we could certainly all use the distraction. But I see no justification for taking risks with people's lives simply for the people's entertainment.

An interesting question would be at what point the US gained the status of an empire. I think the Industrial Revolution and WW2 were the things that created our global empire.

American independence 1776 Industrial Revolution 1750 to 1914. WW II 1939 to 1945. So how many years have we been a Empire?

Pretty much. It has been said that the US became the world leader in GDP around 1890 - 1900. If anyone had any doubt, it was surely erased after WWII.

Like it or not, this is the new normal. Just have to let it run its course. It's not something that can be stopped. Gotta start living your life but wear a mask of course if you're around the vulnerable people.

No we don't have to "let it run it's course." We need to reduce the risk and contain the spread with science and facts, starting with everyone wearing masks at all times in public, continue to keep social distance of 6-feet, wash hands frequently, don't spend time extended time in indoor crowded spaces. We need governors in red states to stop politicizing CDC procedures and get up to speed with all measures to contain the virus instead of making it worse by willfully ignoring science and spreading propaganda instead informing the public with useful and relevant information on what they need to do. The federal government still needs to ramp up testing, contract tracing, quarantines where needed, and continue to ramp of supply production of PPE and testing equipment. The federal government needs to let the CDC take the lead in informing the public and quit lying to the American people. Red state governors need to stop hiding data so the scientists and doctors can make informed decisions.

That's the kind of thinking that will keep the virus with us longer. It's not going to "run it's course." It has to be attacked with the same vigor it's attacking us. It, like measles, polio, flu, to name a few, is here to stay. A vaccine is on the way to check it.

The CDC gave us guidelines to combat the disease. Other countries have done the things necessary, test, contact trace, masks, social distance and their lines have flatten and some have dipped.

It's not going to be a new normal for some time to come. Just the verbiage NEW NORMAL is enough to scare the hell outa me.

Lastly, we have to go to the polls and rid ourselves of the scourge that's allowing the pandemic to spread. The Oval Office and both houses.

It was pretty much official when we won WWII.

If you think about it, we've never really lived up to our founding ideals. I'd say our golden years were the 50s and 60s when we had a great middle class, but I'm sure non-white people will vehemently disagree with me, which is why I say we've never lived up to our founding ideals.

I'd say the late 70s is when our corruption and decline started, when collective narcissism became rampant, combined with a new breed of politicians that brainwashed an entire generation to hate anything that had to do with the govt.

First off, great post. I agree with everything you said.

Secondly, this pandemic really shows how when someone passes the buck when it comes to responsibility. Someone else has to pick it up. Trump and McConnell refused to address the pandemic on a national level with forethought and scientifically backed strategy. So now everybody (whether its pro athletes or every day workers) in this country has to be responsible for making a screwed up choice between health and income. A choice nobody (especially people living in "the greatest country in the world") should be forced to make. Elections have consequences.

Final thought is. Set up sports leagues in Hawaii moving forward. Make the bubble the NBA is doing now. And place it inside a state which already is a bubble. A bubble within a bubble. That's the smartest way to re-implement sports.
