I've been a little disappointed in a few friends I have been seeing on social media. They seem to think that "Stay at Home" means, "daily challenge to see how many outdoor LA landmarks you can visit."

Over here, it’s a game of people coming up with contorted logic for why they are exempt. Frankly, though, the shutdown orders over here are like Swiss Cheese.

Here too. But for the most part, people are respecting the order. Those that have legitimate reason to venture out in public do so and those that don't are staying local and getting their fresh air without traversing the city to do so. It works and this could be a sustainable shutdown for a considerable time when people figure out how to adjust. Which is why I am hoping the dumbasses don't screw it up for the rest.

These are the scourges that will probably not be infected by COVID-19. Darwinism lives.

USC, school districts getting ‘Zoom-bombed’ with racists taunts, porn as they transition to online meetings

Jordan Scott, a high school student in Conejo Valley, logged on to the Zoom video-conferencing platform Tuesday evening hoping for some sense of normalcy after all the overwhelming changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Quote:
Familiar faces popped up on the screen — fellow board members and district staff. But minutes before the meeting was about to start, a number of unrecognized users jumped into the group meeting and began chanting the N-word repeatedly. Close-up pornographic images suddenly took over the center screen.

What is everyone doing to keep your immune systems healthy?

I'm being more mindful to hydrate by drinking more water and sleeping more. I also take elderberry syrup. I tried to order some colloidal silver but it's sold out everywhere for some reason. It's like the entire population is buying it up

I also make a tonic that consists of one lemon, half and orange, apple cider vinegar, water, and raw honey, fresh ginger and turmeric and I blend it up.

Trying to keep my chest area warm and not washing my hair before bed.

My wife's co-worker who lives in Rowland Heights has had her entire family come down with fevers, and coughs, with her mother having pneumonia-like symptoms.

There is apparently a list that they've been put on for testing but they've been told they're not high risk enough to be tested. This is insane.

She says she thinks they got it at church, and they had a number of missionaries from the philippines there. I don't know how true that is, but please stay home.

Good luck everybody.

I've also been making one daily out of orange peel, angostura bitters, sugar, whiskey and ice. Seems to be working pretty well.

Yes, masks work quite well. ANY mask. Leave the N95's for the medical professionals though.

Thanks. I was at the grocery store today and I tied a scarf around my nose and mouth. I wasn't the only one. About half the people I saw had some kind of makeshift mask. And the store had taped off 6-ft markers on the floor at the cash registers to keep people apart. Really, I have to say people here have been really awesome about following the guidelines. Boston, Cambridge and Somerville are like ghost towns. People are only going out to run to the store, exercise or walk their kids and dogs close to home. Hardly any cars or traffic anywhere.

Here's a followup that takes into account both effectiveness and breathability:

https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/

Apparently for DIY, t-shirts and pillow cases have the best overall balance.

I live in a high density city really close to China that has been largely successful in containing the virus. Quite a few people have been continuing to go to work and to restaurants and bars (until recently) for past few months. I have to think the success is due to 99% of locals wearing some sort of surgical mask in public and washing hands religiously rather than due to any government response (which has been comical to this point).

My wife DIY'd me a mask for grocery shopping from a template online using a pillowcase. Unfortunately all she had for the strings to tie it was some frilly straps from one of her old tank tops. On one hand, it's very difficult to tie it. On the other hand, after it is tied, I look FABULOUS!!!!!

I wanted to share a good news story. My friend's son who is a doctor in NYC and who tested positive for COVID has been in quarantine for 7 days. He had mild symptoms going in and now he is symptom free. He has to stay in quarantine another 7 days, but he seems to have pulled through it (he has been holed up in an empty apartment down the street from his residence). I think he's 40-ish and was in good health to begin with. He's angsty to get back to work -- even knowing that back to work means back the hospital where he might get exposed again. But it's a huge relief that he's almost back to normal so quickly. He's been face timing with his 3-yr old twins who know that it's very germy outside and everyone needs to stay home and wash their hands.

We had 10 N95s left over from the Thomas fire and gave them to a neighbor who is a RN at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

if he has recovered, should he not have been 'immunized'?

Work on your immune system. Treat you body right and it will take care of itself. I'm not one for a lot of herbs. I do drink green tea, lemon and ginger. I don't think that helps the immune system, I just do it.

Eat healthy
Don’t smoke
Exercise regularly
Practice stress management
Get enough sleep

a different drug claiming incredible success (95%) in china...
it is supposed to work for severe cases by stopping cytokline storms (immune system gone amuck)
global trials starting early april, but a us trial may be starting (not sure when)

"Promising arthritis drug being used to treat coronavirus patients in China helped to cure 95 PER CENT of critically ill patients, scientists claim
Tocilizumab, marketed as Actemra, is taken by patients with rheumatoid arthritis
It reduces inflammation, which is considered a complication of COVID-19
It causes lung damage and organ failure, eventually death in most cases
Chinese doctors gave it to 20 patients during the peak of the countries epidemic
Nineteen were discharged within 14 days despite being critically ill
Actemra has now been approved for use in China and for trials in the US"

This sounds promising. I don't think there will be a problem finding people to participate in the trial. How much authority does Trump have over the FDA?

Good article on how a large Texas grocery chain was better prepared than the Trump administration, in dealing with COVID-19.

I do all my shopping here, using their online system to order "curbside" pickup at various surrounding stores. It's been a lifesaver, not having to get out of my car to get groceries.

Quote:
Before the Outbreak
J
usten Noakes, director of emergency preparedness, H-E-B: Just a little bit of history: we have been working on our pandemic and influenza plan for quite a while now, since 2005, when we had the threat of H5N1 overseas in China. That’s when we first developed what our plan looked like, [as well as] some of our requirements and business implications. In 2009, we actually used that plan in response to H1N1, when the swine flu came to fruition in Cibolo, and refined it, made it more of an influenza plan. We’ve continued to revise it, and it’s been a part of our preparedness plan at H-E-B ever since.

Justen Noakes: So when did we start looking at the coronavirus? Probably the second week in January, when it started popping up in China as an issue. We’ve got interests in the global sourcing world, and we started getting reports on how it was impacting things in China, so we started watching it closely at that point. We decided to take a harder look at how to implement the plan we developed in 2009 into a tabletop exercise. On February 2, we dusted it off and compared the plan we had versus what we were seeing in China, and started working on step one pretty heavily.

Craig Boyan: Chinese retailers have sent some pretty thorough information about what happened in the early days of the outbreak: how did that affect grocery and retail, how did that affect employees and how people were addressing sanitization and social distancing, how quarantine has affected the supply chain, how shopping behavior changed as the virus progressed, how did companies work to serve communities with total lockdowns, and what action steps those businesses wish they had done early in the cycle to get ahead of it.

Justen Noakes: We activated our Emergency Operations Center in San Antonio on March 4 [the EOC is run out of H-E-B’s new 1.6 million-square-foot super-regional warehouse]. The driving factor behind that is when we see even a potential upswing in customer activity due to one of these events. The Emergency Operations Center at H-E-B is a collection of the most impacted areas of the company, and the leaders in those areas are brought together to make streamlined decisions and collaborate together on a daily basis. That’s almost every area of the company, so we’ve got a lot going on in our emergency operations center right now. It’s very busy.

Union Locates 39 Million N95 Masks for Healthcare Workers, Local Governments

Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers West announced Thursday that it located 39 million N95 masks and will make them available to state and local governments and health care systems that are fighting the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The union found a distributor with the masks, which are cleared for surgical use, after pleas from health care workers as new coronavirus cases surge across the state and the country as a whole.

Union officials said they also found a supplier that can produce some 20 million protective masks per week and another that can supply millions of protective face shields.
