Putting on a Show... Atlanta had dropped 5 of their last 6 heading into this game, getting embarrassed by the Clippers in the last one. They took their lumps from the Lakers tonight. Welcome to Staples this year.

The Lakers starters got them off to a hot start, locking down defensively as they shut down the lane and forced turnovers. Those turned into transition points.

The bench came in and gave up a good chunk of that lead with some poor defense shortly later.

In the third quarter, the Lakers extended to a 30-point lead and that was quickly cut in half as their intensity let up. Vogel would bring LeBron back in to start the fourth and that shut the door on the Hawks for good as the Lakers cruised to the 122-101 win with Kobe sitting courtside. They put on a good show for him.

LeBron -- -- I don’t recall if Kobe’s been to a LeBron Laker game, but I certainly don’t remember one. LeBron came over and said hello midway through the first quarter. Then went about dominating. He had 17 points/7 assists in the first half and was a ridiculous +41 in 17 minutes. What?!! Yeah, just crushing the Hawks, finding teammates, sinking a couple of threes, getting to the rim and just general trouble in transition. We gave him a long rest in the first half. In the second half, we had to bring him in to start the fourth because the Lakers played a poor third quarter. The Lakers starters just didn’t have the second-half intensity out of the gates, so no blowout rest for LeBron. He helped keep the game on track. Despite not getting that extra rest, it was a lighter workload with the team leaning on Rondo more and LeBron able to do work from the perimeter with his 6 makes from three. Put on a great show for Kobe, who thoroughly enjoyed it. LeBron had no turnovers with his 12 assists. “Are you kidding me?” Vogel said about that stat. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 13-21 shooting (6-10 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 12 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +30.

Davis -- -- A quiet first half with just 7 points on 3-8 shooting, but he was making some nice reads with the pass (5 assists). Very perimeter oriented with a lot of help sagging in around him. A bit of a lazy game in some ways and this is likely to him dealing with the injuries. He doesn’t need to go hard offensively, drawing fouls and ending up on the floor again and again. In fact, the floor burns have been much fewer lately. Defensively, he was beasting at times, of course. That combo of McGee and AD to start just shut down the paint. AD had 4 blocks in the first half, McGee had a couple more and a ton of challenges. They looked superb. Still, even with the good D, he didn’t have a single board for forever. He’d only finish with 1. He held his side a little in the first half, but didn’t seem to show any pain the rest of the night and had some nice finished on lobs. (He did miss a dunk attempt, he should have had.) Low minutes tonight, at least. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 5 blocks, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +6.

Green -- -- He had an above-the-rim play tonight that will go on his highlight reel. The whole play was a highlight for him. He tapped out a missed FT, it got popped into the air, he tapped it again to a teammate. We missed a three off that, but he came soaring in from the weakside wing to hammer down the putback jam. The bench exploded. Dwight put his hands on his head in disbelief as he returned down court. Crowd was buzzing going into the half. Great first half from Green. Defensively, he was getting hands on a lot of balls early on. With the bigs defending above the rim, he was down there swiping away below it. That combo was lethal. He had 11 points, 5 boards, 2 steals and 2 blocks in the first half. Strong. Quiet second half. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and no fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +11.

McGee -- -- His first stint in the game was dominant. A +25 in 9 minutes. The Hawks couldn’t draw him out of the paint and he just shut down the rim. It was closed for business in those first 9 minutes as he blocked shots, altered others and even got a couple of steals. We made the Hawks come to him versus them making McGee come to them further out of the paint. When he was out on the perimeter, he had some nice blitzes to pressure the ball handler. A bit of a lazier second half. His first half was his best defensive stretch of the season. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 7 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +11.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He seemed to be the pregame story in this one after the positivity in the last one and everyone having his back. He got the start and was thriving as the team changed ends off steals and boards to get out in transition. He had a number of early layups. They also ran a SLOB lob play to him where LeBron found him for the dunk. That’s the play I was mentioning a couple games back that they needed to run again to help him see the ball going through the hoop. Good to see it still in the mix. Surprised he played just 10 minutes in the first half despite his great start. He had 11 points on 5-7 shooting and was a +28 in the half. He’d get to the rim again in the second half for a score. Great job finishing all night. Defensively, he was staying with Young and our bigs were pressuring, as well, to help. Another good outing for KCP. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +12.

Kuzma -- -- Wasn’t thrilled with the soft defensive lineup we put him on the floor with. They also seemed to have little chemistry offensively. In the second half, when he got more minutes with LeBron, he looked better. He knocked down back-to-back threes that forced the Hawks to call a timeout. He’s one of the few guys that can come off a screen and hit a three, but I really just want to see more of those open threes, on balance where he can dial everything up for a great look/attempt. Slow start, but a strong finish with several threes and a highlight lob dunk on a pass from LeBron. I saw a few moments for he was up on his toes defensively on the perimeter. Hopefully, he’s starting to do that more (Lonzo last year plays like that all 48). The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-14 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +9.

Howard -- -- Love his reaction after Danny Green threw down the lob in the first half. He put his hands on his head and was like “What just happened?” He’s really been not just an adequate teammate, but a great one with a lot of positive energy. He battled on the offensive glass all night and drew a few fouls to regain possessions. Those won’t show up in the box score. He had a couple shotblocks coming from behind a Laker defender to reject it. It was a swatfest all night for the Lakers. They finished with 14 rejections, the most for the team since 2002. Dwight had 3 of them. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-4 shooting from the line to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +18.

Caruso -- -- He had the Trae Young assignment off bench when KCP sat. Even though Young scored decently, AC and KCP helped force 6 turnovers in that first half. Caruso was a pest against him all night. Young was tough hitting those floaters coming off screens and hitting over drop coverage bigs. Most of Young’s scoring was against the Laker bigs after our defenders were screened off. Young had 31 points but 8 turnovers. The stat sheet didn’t reflect with steals or anything how disruptive he was. I loved the finishing by Caruso tonight. He made some very decisive decisions on when to attack and was able to finish well with that off hand. So we’re combining double-digit scoring with the feisty D. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +6.

Rondo -- -- As soon as he came in the Hawks went on a 13-0 run. That wasn’t totally his fault but it was a huge drop off defensively from KCP and McGee to Rondo and Kuzma. Daniels was also in the mix and that was too much. The Hawks milked it. Those Kuzma/Rondo/Daniels minutes will be sketchy at best on that end of the floor. You might be better off putting Kuzma at SF when LeBron sits and bringing in Howard earlier to keep an AD/Howard front court combo. It was excruciating to watch. Once we shuttled out Daniels in the mix, it got much better to watch. When LeBron returned, we leaned on Rondo to have the ball in his hands so LeBron could rest. That’s what we have to do. Otherwise, if the ball is in LeBron’s hands, he’s going to have to settle for a clogged paint. Offensively, he was solid, sinking the open threes and getting some finishes in the paint. In the third, you could see the Lakers clear out for AD in the post in transition, AD then spun and Rondo put at the rim to him for the oop. You can see those two on the same page getting that setup. Quality game. Hopefully, Vogel is a little more mindful of the defensive combinations when Rondo is on the floor. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting (2-3 from three three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +12.

Daniels -- -- Really not much of a game. He missed all four of his three attempts. He was not a positive on D. You just can’t stack that many weak defenders in one lineup and get away with it too often. He was a team-low -5. His only make was a baseline jumper. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 2 boards and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -5.

Cook -- -- In for garbage time. He was called for a couple of travels and hit a short one after probing in the paint for a score. Not much to this one. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 steals and 2 turnovers. He was a -3.

Dudley -- -- He came in for Kuzma with 3 minutes left. The Stats: He had 1 board in 3 minutes. He was a -2.

Vogel -- -- He rewarded KCP who had that strong finish with 12 in the fourth quarter by having him start again. Little victories to build his confidence up. For some players (and people), confidence is a fragile thing and leaders have to look for ways to build that up when it’s not there… Dominant start getting out in transition off good D and scoring. The Lakers led 14-2 at the 8:45 mark and forced a timeout… They extended it to 21-4. McGee shutting down the paint… They forced another timeout up 30-6… ATO play was that elbow action where AD gets screened coming out of the quarter. That got an illegal D call for points… Lakers were up 34-9 when McGee and KCP sat for Kuzma and Rondo. Great job the two starters. Defensively, McGee’s best stretch this season… AC in for LeBron up 23… Daniels in for Green. Lakers lead down to 18… The Kuzma/Rondo/Daniels minutes, yikes. Defensively the team was too soft. They gave up a 13-0 run and led just 36-24 after the first quarter… No LeBron to start the second quarter. So Rondo can orchestrate offensively... Finally a timeout with lead just 10 with 8:26 left. Please sit one of Rondo or Daniels for some defense… He sat Daniels for LeBron out of that and the D picked back up again… Up 19, Caruso out for Green… The Lakers started to extend their lead again… Up 25, AD in for Kuzma and the D kicked up another notch. Finally some defenders around Rondo… KCP back in with 1:54 left for Rondo. Extremely long stint for Rondo, taking a load off LBJ… The Lakers led 69-41 at the half… They pushed it to 30 early in the third, then it was trimmed to 19 as we gave up a 5-point possession. Vogel called timeout. On the ATO, they set up Green off a pindown, but he missed an off-balance three attempt… He called another timeout with the lead trimmed to 12. Now, they gave the Hawks hope and were due to bring in the Laker bench, which had failed to produce in the first half. A 25-7 Hawks run… He sat LeBron/Green for Rondo/Caruso… Under 2 minutes left and we bring Daniels back in for KCP up 12. This is the unit that got killed in the first half. They better score. They did… They led 96-77 heading into the fourth. This time, they switched up the rotation. Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, Daniels and Rondo. They relied more on LeBron to create offensively in this stretch to keep them cruising… Caruso came in for Daniels and kept the intensity up...

Nice win but I am a little concerned re AD I’m wondering if he is more hurt than we know. With that said defensively he’s been a beast still.

Thanks DB.

Fun, junk game!

Lakers set the stage early to let the Hawks know they had NO chance of winning this game. The Lakers played uneven in this game with the 2nd team stinking it up!

Just keep on winning.

Thanks DB. Fun to watch the Lakers cruise for the most part. Nice to see Kobe (and Gianna?) at the game.

It was a block fest tonight. And LeBron is playing like the best player in the league right now. I hope he can keep it up.

The lineup with Kuzma and Rondo is just brutal defensively for us.

Good game, but this Hwaks team is really easy to defend, once you take Trae out of the picture, their playmaking is G-league level...

Surprised that this was the most blocks for our team since 2002. Would’ve thought that one of those Gasol/Bynum/Odom teams also did it as well.

This team reminds me a lot of the Pacers teams Vogel coached. The only difference is we're playing that same consistent 2 way basketball only with 2 top tier talents that Vogel never had before.

This makes me all warm and fuzzy, especially after the Celtics lose a heart breaker to the Kings. When was the last time we were able to lay claim to the best record in the league.

Lakers took care of business.

The only 2 concerns big picture:

1. Daniels and Cook need to start hitting shots consistently
2. Vogel tried a no Lebron or AD second unit led by Rondo and Kuzma and the hawks of all teams went on an extended 13-0 run.

We will not beat the top teams if Rondo and Kuzma don’t pull their weight defensively. The whole Vogel system is about a 5 man unit and more often than not those 2 are the weak links that are causing the breakdowns.

It happened in the Sac game too. 2 is a small sample size, but until proven otherwise, the pattern is there. Rondo and Kuzma need to pull their weight on defense if the Lakers are to legitimately compete for the chip.

A red flag went up for me seeing Rondo, Kuzma and Daniels on the floor all at once. They will need to really dial in their offensive execution because the D will be spotty. I thought maybe experiment with bringing Howard in early to go along side AD and slide Kuzma to SF and see if that helps...especially since Kuzma is knocking down threes at 50% lately.
