Anyone here ride a motorcycle? I've been kicking around the idea. Rode earlier in life (before kids) and I am thinking about going back.

Anyone ride? If so, what kind of bike?

R1200GS

Honestly kind of wish I had something smaller like a 690 so I could really explore offroad, but my GS has taken me all over the place (couple of 7k+ mile road trips) and is still going strong mechanically if almost totaled cosmetically.

I have got the itch a few times, but it passes. Honestly, if I ever do buy, it will be for leisure rides locally....beach view roads, country roads, etc. The way people drive, just not taking one on the interstate.

I used to, past tense, both street and dirt.

Murdercycles are fun, but needless to say they are dangerous as hell. You already know the problems:

1. People don't see you,
2. People act rash and do stupid things while driving,
3. Roads can be slippery, or in a state of disrepair, and
4. Psychopaths abound, who might try to run you off the road
5. Aggressive drivers who cut close, either in an act of road rage, or because bullying makes them feel powerful.

I've thought about it too, but each time I've talked myself out of it.

Yeah, that would be my intended purpose as well. Not interested in using it to commute. I don't trust drivers.

Aren't you tons of fun?

I am really looking at longer distance scenic rides on weekends. No way am I commuting on a bike for all the reasons you listed. Of course, you're not immune to those concerns on weekends, but I don't at all intend to be a regular city rider.

Riding a motorcycle means giving up every safety advance made since the advent of the auto.

I drove from L.A. to New Hampshire and back on a Suzuki Cavalcade which was a big shaft drive touring motorcycle from 30 years ago. It took us about a month (wife was on the back) and was a wonderful trip. Since my son was born, my wife has rightfully rejected the idea of me getting another bike until our son is an adult living on his own, which probably means I'll never have another motorcycle.

there's really nothing quite like a 9,000 mile road trip on a motorcycle

Being in motorcycling you get to know a small community of people who ride....unfortunately, it also means you will get to see people who will probably die in a motorcycle accident more likely than not.

There are two kinds of motorcyclists:

Those who have had an accident and those who will.

One of my Producers was almost killed about 6 weeks ago riding his bike in one of the canyons. Some chucklehead came to a stop in the middle of the road trying to text while pulling out of a driveway. He's been riding for decades . . . he said never again.

Yup, I try to talk anyone I can out of it. If they won't listen then well, they were going to do it anyway and that's their choice.

Did you eat pavement? I signed up for a motorcycle safety course in December but the more YouTube biker videos I watch, the less excited I am about it.

A great way to die!

I recall years ago a story about a local So. Cal. rider hitting a roll of carpet on the freeway and was thrown off his bike and then hit and killed by another vehicle.

If I hit a roll of carpet in my SUV, I continue on to work...

A friend drives from HB to to LAX every day and last week he told me about a biker stradeling the carpool lane going down after a car veered over into him and he said that it was at least the second time he had seen that happen.

My friends are bikers and I've been to a couple of sportbike meets. Pretty much everyone has stories about close calls and they have friends that are no longer with us because of circumstances out of their control (driver not paying attention, debris falling onto the freeway and the biker had no time to react, etc)....If you like sportbikes or riding bikes pretty much the only safe option is to ride trackdays, where you have a controlled environment and safety measures are everywhere.

I do that in a car, or a convertible?

If I ever even entertained the idea, I'd avoid the freeways and highways and would limit myself to the city where speed limit is 35. It still would be incredibly stupid, but less stupid than riding a bike 70 miles per hour where you are almost guaranteed to die or sustain significant injuries if anything goes wrong.

Yep, thats one way to avoid instant death in case something goes wrong.
Unfortunately another way for motorcylists to die or get seriously injured is if a vehicle makes a left turn in front of you, you have little or no time to react and you hit it and you go flying off into the distance.

freeways and highways (assuming you aren't lane splitting, nor even coming close to tailgating, nor going obscenely fast) are safer than busy city roads I would argue

Cities are more dangerous in terms of frequency, whereas highway accidents have higher fatality rates but happen less often.
