I remember this so vividly. Was a teenager who idolized Magic and truly thought this was the end of his life.
So happy that he was able to make it and bring awareness to the HIV situation. May you live long and prosper (but please stay away from Lakers basketball-related decisions please…). _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
I remember weeping when I heard the press conference. Such a surreal day for me.
Yeah..
I remember where I was that day! Sad day! _________________ Starting Lakers Dynasty6.0! NOW!!

One of the saddest days of my life.
Listening to it on the radio.
We had just come off a final appearance where the Bull's lucked out a win
And we could have gone back.
Glad the virus is staying dormant in his body. Live a long live, GOAT!
Magic still had at least 4 years of good basketball. He was coming off a 19/12/7 season, while leading us to the Finals.
It's a shame we never had a Magic x Jordan rematch.
I wonder who we trade Worthy for.
Byron walked.
AC walked.
Worthy retired in 94.
I think the Lakers were shocked into inaction for a while and just maintained status quo. I've always been critical of Jerry West regarding this time period. But had he done things differently, maybe we never see Shaq/Kobe. So it all worked out. But that was a 12 yr drought. We have lynch mobs ready for Mitch and Jim in much less than 12 yrs.
Felt really sad that day. Felt sad for Magic as a person and also felt sad that the showtime era was over. I knew it was almost over but as long as Magic was there there was hope. But that day it all came to an end.
Can't believe it's been 28 years already. Damn I got old.

Imagine if Magic played till he was 37. He had come back in 1995-96 for 32 games as fat Magic at age 36. But just think about him playing till 37 and getting 1 year with Shaq and Kobe. Ignoring the cap|money, but that would have been something.

I was in shock, then saddened because I thought back then that he was going to be dead in a couple years after wasting away horribly. But he beat HIV/AIDS. Pretty (bleep) badass. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

Same here. That day and that time period (bleep) sucked.

Glad he beat HIV, but still a bit sad he was robbed from a couple more elite years in the game. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

I was in Costco at the time and they were showing it on every TV. Everyone was crowded around, no shopping at all in that area and you could see the tears in peoples eyes, the shock and sadness on their faces. It was like being at a funeral for someone everyone loved. We all thought he was going to die. We also all knew that it was the end of Showtime. It was a horrible day.

My mom and I watched the announcement together. It was beyond shocking. My mom cried. I was in the midst of having lost a number of friends to AIDS. That was a time, and not a good one.
I was in boot camp and we didn't have access to newspapers except on Sunday. But people started hearing it from others and I didn't believe it at first thought it was just a rumor. At that time I would have never expected Magic to still be alive and healthy.
