I'm looking into buying a new mattress and my mind is blown by all the choices. Used to be a pretty simple process. Go to Goodwill and throw one in the back of the station wagon. Now there's like a 100 options.

Throw me your suggestions/experiences. Casper? Leesa? Purple? Avocado? Tuft & Needle? Should I go on?

I bought an Amerisleep memory foam adjustable bed a few years ago. It was one of the highest rated ones at the time but I wouldn't buy it again. I'm not sure there is much difference between memory foam mattresses these days. The old ones people used to complain were hot and had a strong chemical smell but I think they've moved past those problems. Mine did smell for a few days but it went away and I don't find it hot.

My previous bed was one of those Sleepnumber adjustable air mattresses which lasted almost 20 years. If I had to do it again, I'd probably get one of the new models.

I would recommend Ortho mattress store, but the aireloom mattresses are worth the $ if you buy one

A recently bought an Allswell mattress and am very pleased. Great price and more comfortable than the tuft and needle I tried.

Nobody found it weird that like within a couple months there was 30+ new mattress companies rolling out national marketing campaigns centered around this concept of shipping a mattress to you in a box the size of a golf bag? It just felt like they all launched around the same time.

The technology was a game changer. Previously, the logistics of getting mattresses from here to there limited entry.

That makes sense...but I am thinking it still took months/years to get a business plan, money, manufacturing, etc. up and running....so they had to all be doing this trying to get to market. Honestly, it is not just mattresses I see this same thing happen with mens underwear in recent years. For decades if you wanted your standard Hanes/FoTL you went to a big box retailer and if you preferred CK or RL then you swung by an anchor store at the mall. Then over the past year, I have seen countless adds for mail order mens underwear like Tommy John's, MeUndies, etc. Feel like the same pattern is starting with socks.

Is there a model you recommend? Like the OP, I'm searching for a mattress and am completely overwhelmed by the choices. I'm currently using a pillowtop spring mattress. I loved it but as I get older, I'm looking for something less bouncy/pillowy.

I bought the Allswell because of a combination of things:

1. Great price, hundreds below Tuft and Needle and Casper, for example
2. Great reviews
3. I liked the descriptions in the reviews of the firmness. It's a hybrid that has coils on the bottom for rigidity and airflow, and a memory foam top layer. Does not sleep "hot" like many of the all foam mattresses. Queen was like 350 bucks, and it's amazingly comfortable for me. Sleeps well back, side, and stomach.

I can only tell you about casper as its the brand I have.

I have "the essential" for my guest room and its a wonderful matress. Its not too firm not too soft but the edges imo are too soft and it might feel like you're falling off if you're sleeping close to it probably cuz its only 3 layers of memory foam. The quality however is very good. It tends to be a little warm when sleeping as well.

For my bedroom I have "the wave" which feels firmer but also maintains the softness. I feel the support is much better than the essential which makes sense considering its more than double the price.

I'm a side sleeper and the wave definitely feels better. Not sure the difference for stomach or back sleepers.

I have chronic insomnia, so I opted for the purple. It worked great for the first few weeks, but then my body got used to it and the bouts of insomnia returns.

I tried the essential and I dind't particularly like it. I'm both a back/side sleeper too. I wish there was a way to try these online mattresses...

Have you tried a weighted blanket? I purchased one a few months back. I absolutely love it.

Just looked it up and it seems like it's a ton of value. Might just pull the trigger if they have a decent return policy.

Living Spaces has their own mattresses that are much less expensive than mattress store mattresses. We bought a higher end one about four years ago and it’s been fantastic.

I am something of a mattress enthusiast and have been sleeping on a DIY mattress with latex base and memory foam on top for 20 years.

If you are a side sleeper you want something soft for your shoulders to sink into and offer pressure relief. IF you sleep on your back you want firm and if you sleep mostly on your stomach you want extra firm.

I tried the Purple Mattress at Macy's. They also have them at many "Mattress Firm" stores too. I was really blown away by the Purple 3. Very good pressure relief but not so soft it didn't offer support. Purple 4 felt like a water bed. Purple 2 was too firm. Purple 1 has a less durable foam base instead of springs like the others. Remains to be seen if these will be durable but feel and support is fantastic.

Avocado is a hybrid mattress with springs on bottom and latex comfort layer. If "all natural, organic, chemical free " floats your boat Avocado is first choice followed by Allswell.

The rest is generic memory foam in a box mattress companies. Or sometimes hybrid mattresses. Casper is the original bed in box company so I would go with them based on longest track record if you want a standard bed in a box. They actually have a store inside my local mall for you to try out.

Another you might consider if you want an innerspring mattress is Real Fig Mattress. These are firm mattresses for obese and morbidly obese people. If they are designed to last 15 years for morbidly obese people it should last regular folks decades. These will feel very firm to regular folks but you can just slap a memory foam or latex topper on top to soften them up.

correct, and that is interesting. As Omar said, it has to be related to ability to enter the market because I can recall from some undergrad Financial Analysis projects many years ago that mattresses and razors both had massive margins. That was 20 years ago and a reference to standard mattresses, but I assume the margins remained high with the newer versions.

I went to Sit n Sleep and got a Thermorest, don't know which model, you have to go there and lay on them yourself, you can't have someone tell you what mattress to get, well unless its your wife...

You're killing me Larry...

Damn, AP. That's terrible. Sorry to hear about that. That's something that's only plagued me in bouts from time to time during periods of tumult and unrest. Some of the roughest times of my life made agonizingly worse.

I hope you do find the rest you do get rehabilitating. Man.

Ecommerce. Before, you had to sell your product through established distribution channels that had barriers to entry. But now, you put up a website and test out your product before investing the type of capital needed for a major retailer to take on your product. A lot of these companies start out by just making a few and setting up a website and if the sales come in, then you go and get money to expand. Very hard to do that before in an established market like mattresses or razor blades where you needed capital and connections. And once one company starts gaining momentum, the online sector allows for others to copycat you very quickly. Seemed like all of those online subscription services sprouted at the same time right? Well it probably started with Birchbox

If you are interested in this stuff, I highly recommend a podcast called How I Built This from NPR. They talk to successful business founders of companies like Lyft, Reddit, Warby Parker, Instagram, AirBnB, etc about their “day 1” and how the business came to be. Fascinating stuff. The Dollar Shave Club one was interesting. A friend ask him to sell 250,000 generic razors they couldn’t move so he set ip DSC to move them and it just took off and became a business. No months/years of planning and investing, just the good old internet and most of these companies started this way you’ll see if you listen to it =)

Seriously, I appreciate you wealth of knowledge along with all the other comments here. As mentioned, it seems like mattress in a box options are reproducing like feral cats.....
