Quote:
Suns center Deandre Ayton is facing a 25-game suspension for violating NBA’s Anti-Drug policy with a positive test for a diuretic, league sources tell ESPN. The NBA informed Ayton and Suns of looming suspension tonight.

The NBPA is already preparing arbitration case to reduce or rescind penalty, based on belief positive test falls under CBA provision of ‘unintentional ingestion', league sources tell ESPN. Ayton was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Follow-up testing on Phoenix's Deandre Ayton showed no traces of any other banned substances, sources with knowledge of results tell ESPN. NBPA is likely to fast-track arbitration process to push for a reduction as soon as possible, per sources.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the NBA’s Player’s Association has already prepped an arbitration case for Ayton to reduce or entirely rescind the suspension. That case is built on Ayton’s “unintentional digestion” of a diuretic, which are medications that help increase the production of urine and also used for blood pressure and weight loss.

A diuretic is a banned substance due to its ability to serve as a “masking agent” to help the body rid itself of other illicit substances before a test

A similar issue cropped up with Alonzo Trier while the two were teammates at Arizona. Interesting.

Maybe insecurity over being viewed as a dud of a pick next to Luka, Trae, and even guys like Mitchell Robinson? (Obviously not true but maybe he let the bad press get to him.)

I think BVH is on to something something tbh. Awfully convenient how similar to Trier this scenario is.

Since they only detected the masking agent but not the PED, it's hard to guess at the reasons. It could be he was looking to increase his performance or it could be he was looking to recover quicker after games and practices.

He's a freak of nature by our standards but compared to someone like Embiid, not so much. He'll get stronger as he gets older and keeps working but some athletes don't have the patience or work ethic and look to take short cuts.

The NBA hasn’t really had their PED scandal yet. It’ll happen one day though.
