Does anybody know what 3 players have the top EFF ranking in history? If I were to guess I would say, Magic, Jordan, and J. Stocton. Just guesses though. |

I'm not sure but I do know for a fact that Larry Bird actually had a higher EFF rating than all three of those players. |

Hey eureca, I dunno where you got those stats, but I think you are incorrect. Check this out:
NBA.com evaluates all players based on the efficiency formula: ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)) / Games).
Plus you must realize that turnovers were not counted until the 77/78 season, and blocks and steals until 73/74. So it is very difficult to know exactly what the true efficiency rating is for Kareem, The Big O, Elgin Baylor, Mr. Clutch, Wilt the Stilt and so on.
So, lets try out Larry Bird's career efficiency rating here...
((21791 + 8974 + 5695 + 1556 + 755) - ((17334 - 8591) + (4471 - 3960) + 2816) / 897)) = 29.77
How amazing is that number!? Almost a 30 efficiency rating for his entire career.
You may recall Kevin Garnett having a super high EFF rating back in his mvp year, 03/04, when his rating was 35.20!
Here are a couple other notables (for their entire career):
Jordan: 29.19
Magic: 29.15
Shaq: 28.92
Duncan: 27.20
Garnett: 27.00
Kobe: 21.12 |

Well yeah the ones I posted are dating back to the early 50s so yeah it probably doesnt include turnovers, blocks and steals. |

What he posted wasn't EFF, but PER. EFF doesn't account for minutes played, and it basically treats every statistic the same. PER takes out the problem of playing time by using per 48 minute stats (so you aren't significantly penalized if you play 32 minutes while the other guy plays 40), and tries to actually weigh each stat by its impact on the game. |
