Will well rested Lebron offset him being a year older?

Let me introduce you to Kobe Bryant

In all honesty I think Kobe's "mamba mentality" made him harder on his body than he should have been.

In his book he talks about how he hit the gym hard regardless of how he felt or whether he thought he needed rest, and through all kinds of injuries. His recovery routine also seemed pretty low-tech mainly consisting of ice baths and Judy Seto.

LeBron's recovery regimen looks straight-up sci-fi compared to what I know of Kobe.

That's because he missed a ton of games because of injuries (same reason Kawhi came in so low in the voting). Before he got injured, Lebron was probably in the top 3-5 for the award.

Agree with the reasoning for MVP voting. It will be interesting to see how the trends in voting will account for “load management” strategies.

I would be more critical of James pre-injury. Gaudy stats for sure, but I tend to judge overall game more then others seem to do. James would drop because of that IMO. Whether top 3, top 5 or top 10 is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree 100%. I've held this same belief that Kobe did himself no favors by over working during the offseason and during the season and gutting out injuries that he should have let rest to fully recover. Kobe would have benefited greatly by load management and actually letting his injuries heal. Like after he (bleep) his 2 fingers up he opted not to get surgery and that is the main reason why I think his shooting and ball handling started to take a big dip his last 5 seasons. Kobe also would get a lot of small injuries early in his career as well.

I think you need to play a certain threshold of games to have a legitimate shot at MVP. If you miss games for injury or rest, your chances will be lower.

Of course, that might change if suddenly every superstar in the league is missing a lot of games because of load management, but I doubt that will happen.
