In the summer of 2021, the Lakers could conceivably have 35m+ in cap space (if LBJ opts in). If he doesn't and goes the route of Tim Duncan/Dirk and takes a major paycut (not sure if he will or go full Kobe on us), we can have a max slot easily in hand.
2021 is clearly the year of Giannis. But here are some other FAs of note:
Bradley Beal (age 28 by 2021)
Gobert (29)
Oladipo (29)
The Lakers will also get a bigger MLE next season as a likely over the cap team too, and can sign a key piece. Seems we are setting up a mini 2 year title run, and then a reset for 2021 when AD will be 28 (and hopefully locked up long term), and Giannis (26).
PG will be 31 and KL will be 30 respectively.
Very interesting how Rob has set up all the deals to end b/f 2021. Ball will firmly be in LBJ's court at that time to determine if he will step fully aside to let a younger max player in. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
Remember the days when we drafted talent, developed it and signed great FAs or made trades that benefited the now and the future? With saying that, Giannis or bust in 2021 my dude. _________________ Music is my medicine
Thanks for sharing. This is HUGE and will make most feel better. It would not surprise me if LJ will took a haircut at that time.
Isn't it pretty much established that, if his son Bronny is drafted, he's going to that team. If he still looks good in two years, I'm betting a team will draft Bronny with the knowledge this gets you LBJ. Assuming no catastrophic injury in the next two years, I still think LBJ can play a decent role on a title contender for 15-20 minutes a night at 37/38.
EDIT: Nevermind, I thought Bronny was older. Apparently, he's not coming into the league for at least 4 more years.

Would be something if Klutch pulled some strings and got him drafted by the lakers

No, I really don't. The 90's "rebuild" was an almost complete waste of time.
Targets for the full MLE:
Dragic or Lowry for that 2ndary ball handler role
Marc Gasol or Ibaka for the Boogie/Javale replacement at center
---
Yeah they're old but if they have any juice left, and want to play in LA, these are nice gets.
And if somehow Brandon Ingram falls through the cracks and gets renounced or forgotten in the New Orleans shuffle, it'd be nice to take a flyer on him and bring him back into the fold (I know there's 20 other teams that would pay him double the MLE for just the CHANCE of him blossoming, but stranger things have happened) _________________ Lakers Picks The Next Six Years:

2025 - New Orleans
This will be interesting to watch b/c we have to be careful about adding long-term deals that would jeopardize 2021. I love how we didn't opt for all expiring deals (though some are player options), but we ensured that all deals would expire for 2021. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
Is Bronny even that good? I thought he was more flash than substance. I thought Wade, Pippen, and Martin's kids were all better.
Hard to know at 14, but he already had scholarship offers from Duke and Kentucky. Dude will have the spotlight on him (and does already), which will help with exposure.

So LJ wants to play with his son at 40/41 years old?

Not sure we'll have that much. I think AD will be making $37 million by then.
When you combine him, Lebron, Kyle, Deng's payoff, and the minimum slots, that's about $97 million. Right now the NBA is forecasting the cap at $116 million for 20-21. So I think we'd have closer to $19 million.

But you just said in your original post if LBJ opts in we'll still have 35mil in cap space _________________
