Wow, that was intense! It was not on my radar but the Lady Funkbot wanted to see it, so off we went. A few days later and I am still thinking about this movie, the images are seared into my mind.

It was long and pretty traumatic, but great job by the director and the cast to really make what could have been a terrible movie actually pretty great.

Anyone else catch it?

The first 20-30 minutes of the movie were incredible. They did a great job of getting you to invest in the characters right away, specifically Dani.

I really liked it but not sure if this one is a rewatchable. The life cycle philosophy was intriguing. The comedy was pretty great and helped break the tension.

The ending though, I'm left wondering why she made that decision. She slowly lost her mind and her bf's gaslighting was becoming more transparent to her. But that doesn't justify killing him (right?). So was it a decision made by a completely broken woman or by a person trying to survive - seeing this as a final test and if she chose wrong (not the bf) they would kill her too?

Yeah, what a mind bleep Dani went through. I am not sure that she was not still tripping on the herbal LSD when that whole thing happened at the end.

I was also wondering about Peli- did he know he was leading his friends to the slaughterhouse the whole time?

I think Peli had Dani in mind as the queen the whole time. His "friends" were just the key to getting her to come.

Yeah, without question. As to Dani, she finally had a community and family willing to accept her. The actress stated that she felt Dani was overwhelmed by her boyfriend's "cheating" and that she broke; but the director said that he thought it was a little more nuanced, and related to her being embraced by a community, a family, just months after she lost hers.

In the end, an interesting movie with some great visuals, but not much to write home about.

Just saw this. It was the director's cut so I don't know what's different from the theatrical release.

(bleep). I feel so sick. It's the most (bleep) up movie I've ever seen. The care and creativity that went into every shot in this movie (and Hereditary) should be the standard for film making. Ari Aster is a genius.

I remembering cracking the hell up when in the middle of the baby making scene my buddy slowly turns to me and says “worst porno ever.”

Dani has lost everything and everybody in her life. They key scene takes place after she witnesses Christian’s betrayal. All of her grief and pain that has been coiled and suppressed erupts out of her in a total breakdown and the cult members meet her at that guttural level. They collapse and wail and sob along with her, literally feeling her pain. They’re her family now. As she watches Christian burn, helpless and paralyzed while sewn into the body of a bear, she becomes fully reborn and free from her grief, surrounded by her accepting and loving throng. Our last look is that twisted, beautiful smile across her face.
