|
|
So I was looking at Bird exceptions when someone was asking about a 2+1 contract offer. I noticed that the 1 year bird exception allows a 20% bump. Could this be used to get a 3rd max guy up to the max after 1 year?
From the CBA FAQ:
Quote: | NON-BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Its name is somewhat of a misnomer, since Non-Bird really is a form of Bird rights. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Non-Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. They are veteran free agents who are neither Qualifying Veteran Free Agents nor Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents, and include the following:
*Players who finished the season with a given team, who have played no more than one season without clearing waivers or changing teams as a free agent.
*Players who were Early Bird free agents, but whose team renounced its right to use the Early Bird exception to re-sign the player.
*Players who were to be Larry Bird or Early Bird free agents, were playing on one-year contracts, and were traded mid-season.
This exception allows a team to re-sign its own free agent to a salary starting at up to 120% of his salary in the previous season (not over the maximum salary, of course), 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount needed to tender a qualifying offer (if the player is a restricted free agent -- see question number 42), whichever is greater. Raises are limited to 5% of the salary in the first year of the contract, and contracts are limited to four seasons when this exception is used. |
So, If we signed a max quality guy for 1 year, would we have his Non-Bird exception?
If yes, can we offer him 27 this year and then 27*1.2 = 32.4 the next year? |

Yes, but that's a risk and instead of starting at 32.7m with his annual raises he would be starting 5m in the hole. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Why not just have Nike and New Balance come to agreement that Kawhi Leonard be the second lead in Space Jam 2?
That’s your freaking 5 million right there
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keanu_Reeves
Keanu Reeves once made 15 million per film
To me this stupid salary cap BS is a non issue and the Pelicans being petty
The rest of the NBA is terrified of the Lakers and everybody knows it
Hell even Bosh, Wade, and Bron all took discounts to form the Heatles
I am sure Bron and AD would do the same for Kawhi
Look at all the glory and endorsements that it got them
Winning Championships gets you more in the end
AD himself said it wasn’t about money, it is about legacy. Uncle Dennis and Kawhi are smart enough to know this too.
Bron, AD, Kawhi are going to be Laker Legends
Nobody going to stop that
Not Woj
Not ESPN
Not the Pelicans
Not Griffin
Just sign Kawhi to Space Jam 2
Get him his 5 million plus disability insurance for one year
Then sign him to his mini Bird 120% raise next year
Then the 10 year max salary whenever it is due
It is going to happen
All these other forces are creating FAKE DRAMA |

That would be a violation of the CBA. I believe Dennis Rodman's agents actually tried something like that once and they ended up getting banned by the league and could no longer represent players
Beyond that no film company would pay Kawhi $5 million. |
