If AD signed an extension he would be extending his current contract that was based on 25% of the cap at the time he signed. If he opts out after this season he can sign a new contract worth 30% of next year’s cap. That will be a much higher salary.
I get it, but why not at least say that to allay fears? At least rhetorically he's leaving the window wide open that he might bolt.
Because keeping fear instilled is what gives potential free-agents power. That comes right out of the Lebron James playbook. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant
Would it be possible for AD to transition into more of a ball in hand type of player like Giannis and/or KD? It would be pretty big for him not to have to rely on anyone.

In the interview, he also said he wants to make his own decisions and that other people made it for him all these years. The point of free agency is to be independent and make the decision yourself. So I don't blame him for not committing to anything right now because that defeats the purpose of free agency. _________________ ¡Hala Madrid!

after LeBron retires
He'll learn plenty from LeBron, and get plenty of opportunity when LeBron is out/sitting/LeCoasting.
He did it in NOLA. Wish I was able to format this better, oh well.

Yeah, it's not like Kareem demanded a trade to the Lakers or Knicks in 1974....

Superstars rarely give verbal commitments a year in advance of signing. My guess is AD has ever intention of signing a max deal with us, but sure there's always the possibility that something weird will happen and he won't. That's just life -- it rarely comes with ironclad guarantees.
Honestly anyone who's worried about Davis leaving is just the worrying type in general. There's every reason to believe he'll stay and no particular reason to think he'll leave.

It's also possible that you might start posting better content, but what's the point in worrying about minuscule probabilities?

Hogwash. AD isn't saying it out loud simply because it's not the done thing to publicly admit you'd prefer to opt out and re-sign than sign an extension in order to collect a bigger pay-check.

It’s technically possible, but AD and Rich Paul didn’t do everything they did just for AD to leave LeBron and the Lakers after one year.
To me, the more interesting question is whether he takes a full 5-year max, a 2+1 (like Kawhi) or a 1+1 to line up with Lebron’s remaining contract. If he did the last one, I would not feel good about it.
Is this what we are doing now? We are gonna worry about him leaving before he even plays a game? Wow, the media really plays mind games with fans and we fall for it every time. AD is going nowhere. It’s just something that the media will continuously bring up to stir the pot and keep the drama going with the Lakers because that sells. They will leave out the facts that its in his best financial interest to not sign an extension and go into Free agency and re-sign. Nope, they will continue to push the “what if he leaves” narrative to keep everybody ( Laker fans) on edge and give hope to others( knicks fans) that they may have a shot at signing him next summer.

True and even though they may give a verbal agreement (like Kyrie, Boston and “I wanna be here long term if you’ll have me”) it doesn’t mean much anyways.
