I feel like there are a lot of shows that would be viewed in a lot better light had the creators decided to end the show earlier rather than later.

Dexter (after season 1 or 4)
Homeland (after season 1 or 3)
GoT (after season 4)
TWD (so many chances)

Curious, any shows you loved that you wished ended earlier so you didn't have to suffer the drop in quality?

Star Trek: Next Gen (after season 6)
Star Trek: DS9 (after season 6)
Star Trek: Enterprise (after season 3)
Star Trek: Voyager (after episode 1)

Despite the final seasons not being up to the quality of the previous ones, I'm still glad we have those episodes to watch because not all of them were bad.

The Lakers after 2010. But they’ve got a lot of time to turn it around still, even if it takes a few months, years, or decades. Hopefully within my lifetime.

Sons of Anarchy probably could have been a season or 2 shorter. I liked the first 3 more than the later ones.

3 was Gyp.

Happy Days jumped the shark in the last season or two, well, actually it got progressively dumber even after the 1st season.

Show wasn't the same for me after they axed Jimmy the season 2 finale.
Wikipedia says killing Jimmy that early wasn't the original plan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Darmody
Quote:
Series creator and showrunner Terence Winter said he always planned on killing off Jimmy, but did not think it would happen so soon in the series. Jimmy was originally supposed to survive after season two. The storyline was changed when Dabney Coleman, who played the Commodore, was being treated for cancer during filming.[22] In order to accommodate Coleman's condition, the Commodore's screen time was reduced and Jimmy became the leader of the rebellion against Nucky. The further they got in the writing process, the more the writers realized that Nucky killing Jimmy was the only logical conclusion to the story.

The last 2 original seasons of the X-Files were pretty bad. The show should have ended when David Duchovny left.

Heroes was fantastic in season 1 and then quickly went downhill as season 2 unfolded. It was a disaster in season 3 and I had to stop watching.

The Office was never the same after Steve Carell's departure, although the final season was better and the series finale was satisfying.

I don't even know what happened with Homeland after Damian Lewis' Brody character died; I just had no desire to watch the show after that.

ER definitely ran too long, and the same is happening with Grey's Anatomy right now. Ditto CSI in the post William Petersen years, although I really did like the series finale, a 2-hour movie where they brought Peterson and several other original cast members back.

Homeland has recovered nicely after a down season or two, and shameless has been better as its gone on. It started as crass and funny, but now it is seriously deep and brilliant. Might not make it without its anchor star though.

Scrubs. We never speak of the season after the finale.

I think there's a difference between later seasons not living up to the quality of earlier seasons (GoT), and shows simply running out of things to say, or losing crucial characters. I think House of Cards should have ended with that fist rap on the Resolute Desk right when he because President -- the essence of the show changed right then. OTOH, something like West Wing ended at the right time, but the quality of the show certainly dropped after Sorkin left.

Sopranos - the last season. The show had run its course. It felt like a money grab.

GOT fans will never be satisfied. If the current loud 1M fans weren't griping, you'd have another 1m fans griping.

Really revolutionary show. Can't think of another show talking about pot in the suburbs way back in 2005. It didn't shy away from exploring the sexuality of a female lead playing a widow. The theme song discussed how capitalism can strip away individuality. They vividly showed the pretentiousness within some suburb communities. And they succeeded with dark comedy when that was a tough genre to be successful with back then.

Not an A+ show like Breaking Bad. But it arguably did more for future television by the way it pushed past boundaries that were considered taboo AND succeeded.
