Back to the Tank… With LeBron out for the second night of the back-to-back (add also Ingram, Ball, Bullock, Hart, Muscala, Chandler), the Lakers rolled out a lot of deep bench for some seasoning. G-League teammates Williams, Wagner, Bonga, Caruso, Machado all got time in the first half (often four of those playing at once).

Despite that, the Lakers trailed 60-53 at the half (just a couple turnovers, saving the Lakers).

Unlike the last game where the ball was moving freely, the Lakers resorted to quite a bit of iso play in this one. The offense went stagnant for stretches as a result. One of those stretches was to open up the second half scoreless. This dug too big of a hole for them to overcome. The Lakers fell 115-100.

Kuzma -- -- He banked in his first three straight away and then did it again on his next attempt. The first one wasn’t planned, but I might believe the second one was. (He airballed a three and hit the side of the board on another three in the second half, so he was spraying it all over.) He had 16 points on 6-13 shooting as he was pulling the trigger on a quite a few shots. The team really could have used more playmaking like he did when LeBron sat previously. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-18 shooting (2-7 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed an elbow pull-up jumper. He banked in a deep three for the Lakers first points. He banked in a second three from the same spot, straight away. He swished a turnaround at the top of the key. He missed a wing three. He went up and under on Rubio from the wing for a leaning bank. He missed a wing three. He got hammered on a layup attempt with no call (McGee cleaned it up). He rejected a drive on the other end. He cut, took the pass and scored the bank. He attacked and was knocked down with no call. He missed a tough running bank (a little outside of his range on that type of shot). He bumped Mitchell off the floor on a drive and drew FTs, he made both. He faced up, swung through and swished the wing jumper. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He airballed a step-back three. He attacked and didn’t get the ball on the rim. He hit the side of the board on a three. He sank a step-back 17-footer. He sank a baseline turnaround after picking up his dribble. He iso’d at the end of the quarter, attacked and was fouled on the perimeter, he made one FT.

Rondo -- -- The offense seemed a bit stagnant and iso heavy at times with LeBron out. The Jazz went under the screens all night daring Rondo to shoot. He missed with consistency, so that really limited his effectiveness and the team as a whole. The Lakers also struggled to get anything going in transition. Impressive shooting tonight. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-11 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 26 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a floater (hit the side of the backboard). He attacked and missed a layup. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He hit Caruso in early offense for a three. Rondo nailed a three from the same spot next time down. He missed a drive trying to finish high over the help. He airballed a runner trying to create against the shotclock. He missed a pull-up 17-footer as the D went under the screen. He kicked out to KCP for three. He attacked, took contact with no call and missed. Second Half: He missed an open three. He missed a wing three. He dribbled through the lane then had his pass stolen. He set up McGee for a floater. He attacked and was blocked, dunk the other way. He set up Williams for FTs.

McGee -- -- The most points in a 4-game span in JaVale’s career with 86 (previous high of 82). Luke made sure he was matched up with Gobert all night (except after McGee took his second 18-footer of the night, then Luke sat him). He definitely missed the attention and playmaking that LeBron brings, but teammates started to pick it up as the game went along and you started to see the lob dunks and strong finishes. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-15 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 13 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He rejected a drive. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made both. He missed a jumphook. He missed a short jumphook at the front of the rim. He missed a tip after a good effort. He threw down a putback jam off Kuzma’s dribble penetration. He fumbled a pass and missed the rushed one-hander. He missed a 17-footer. Poor close out and he gave up a layup. He tapped an offensive board out to Stephenson for a three. Second Half: He airballed a jumphook. He hit the jumphook off the pocket pass from Lance. He hit a floater off a series of passes. He missed an 18-footer (Luke yanked him). Lob dunk off the pass from AC. He hit an 18-foot pull-up. Another lob dunk off the drive from Machado. He dunked off the interior feed from Williams. He missed a floater. He was stripped at the elbow.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- We struggled to get him open looks in the first half. I know we don’t have a lot of players, but we should have a little more consistent ability to set up shooters out of a system than we do. Give the Jazz some credit for overplaying him quite a bit. They have Gobert plugging the paint to help prevent any counters. It worked out well for them. Not enough passing and other threats on the court, also, certainly made getting him good looks a lot tougher. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-9 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He missed a wing three. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He made a tech FT. He missed a tough fade from a little behind the backboard. Second Half: He missed a three straight away. He scored a layup cutting away from the overplay to get the ball out of a timeout. He made a tech. He missed a pull-up jumper. He knocked a ball loose at mid court. He missed a turnaround. He got no separation off a screen, but forced up the three anyway and missed.

Stephenson -- -- Some difficulties finishing at the rim. That will happen with Gobert back there and that took a few points away from Lance that he normally might have pulled off. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-11 shooting (1-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed a sideline three. He lost his man going behind his back, then missed the hanging layup. He hit Kuzma cutting for a score. He was rejected on a drive. He hit a pull-up 17-footer. He missed a pull-up from the same spot. He missed an elbow pull-up. He missed a corner three, had it tapped back to him and he sank the sideline three. He was fouled in transition, he made both FTs. Second Half: He sank a pull-up elbow jumper. He set up McGee on the pocket pass for the jumphook. He blew past his man and was fouled at the rim (might have been a clean block), he made one FT. He couldn’t finish around Gobert on iso. He missed a three.

Caruso -- -- Playing some very consistent ball. He had 8 points on 3-5 shooting in the first half, sinking a couple of threes, including a first-quarter buzzer beater. Some nice moments finishing or trying to finish at the rim. Love it when he attacks the rim hard. Play of the game was probably a lob to him or a between-the-legs pass he made to Williams trailing the break for a score. Good outing from AC. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-10 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He drained a three in early offense. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He swished a leaning three off an inbounds to beat the buzzer. He attacked, got contact and banked it in high off the glass. He missed a 10-footer in the middle of the paint. Second Half: Weak pass on the perimeter and it was stolen for a score the other way. He got tapped on a corner three. He crossed over in transition and drew FTs on a dunk attempt on Gobert (probably should have finished that). He hammered down a massive lob dunk to start the fourth. Pocket pass to Williams for the dunk. He pushed it up and went between his legs to Williams behind him for the score. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He attacked and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He iso’d and hit the baseline pull-up. He missed a wing three.

Wagner -- -- He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting in the first half. Man, he shoots some rainbow threes. In the last game, the camera had to pan up to follow the arc of his shot. Always dependable from the FT line, he made all four attempts tonight. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He tipped in a missed shot. He took the pocket pass, attacked down the middle of the paint and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He attacked and threw it away. He sank a wing three behind a screen on the weakside (usually set that play up for guards). He attacked on iso and was blocked by Gobert on the help. Second Half: He missed a deep three. Ball fake and he attacked the paint for FTs, he made both. He blocked a drive. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish over Gobert. He finished the And-1 layup off the no-looker from Bonga, he made the FT. He spun and missed the pull-up.

Williams -- -- His usual assortment of hustle play mixed in with some nice finishes when teammates set him up off the two-man game. He played to his strengths all game. Definitely could see some chemistry with his fellow G-League teammates. Need to work on those freethrows. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 4 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He airballed a lefty jumphook. He missed a short one in the middle of the paint. He was fouled on a jumphook. Second Half: He couldn’t finish an And-1 layup off the bounce pass from Rondo, he missed both FTs. He deflected a pass to get a stop. He hammered a dunk off the bounce pass from Caruso. He missed a jumphook. He scored in transition off the between-the-legs pass from Caruso. He was blocked on a floater. He crashed the glass and reset the offense. He hammered off the drive and dish from Machado. He drew FTs off the bounce pass in the paint, he made one. Interior feed off the roll to McGee for the dunk.

Machado -- -- He came in early in the second quarter, but got warmed up in the second half. Some nice drives that led to scores or feeds to teammates for easy finishes. He sank a three late. Overall, very good effort and he started to look very comfortable out there. Let’s get him some more minutes. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He and Williams stripped a man on a double team. Second Half: Perfect lob to Caruso for the dunk to start the fourth. He probed baseline and reversed. He attacked the paint and fed Williams for the dunk. He worked the two-man game nicely to set up Williams in the paint for FTs. He attacked the paint and couldn’t muscle in the layup. He got around his man and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He missed a floater. He fumbled a defensive board out of bounds. He attacked on a push out and finger rolled a layup over the D. He stopped quickly at the three line and drained the pull-up.

Bonga -- -- He got early run in this game. His first attempt was an airball from three by a couple of feet. Late in the game, he had a nice drive and no-looker to Moe for an And-1 layup. He had a couple players get by him defensively, but he’s usually been pretty solid on D when given minutes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Wide left airball on a sideline three. He attacked left, lot it, got it back and swished a short leaner. Second Half: He missed a flat jumphook across the lane. He attacked the paint and no-looked to Moe for the And-1 layup.

Walton -- -- Offense was a bit stagnant and purposeless to start… Down 14-10 when they brought in Williams and Caruso for McGee and Stephenson… McGee back in for Williams shortly later… Bonga in for KCP, Stephenson for Rondo, Lakers down 10… The Lakers trailed 32-25 after the first quarter… He started a G-League special of Williams, Wagner, Bonga, Stephenson, Caruso… Machado ready to check for an all G-League lineup? No. In for Bonga… McGee, Wagner, Kuzma, Stephenson, Rondo lineup down 6 midway through the quarter… KCP in for Stephenson… Offense getting a little too iso heavy. Luke called a timeout down 9… Down 11 missing 8 straight attempts (no FGs for 5 minutes)… Lakers down 5 when the Jazz called a timeout… The Lakers trailed 60-53 at the half… They gave up a 7-0 run to start the half and Luke called a timeout… Caruso in for Rondo… Moe in… The Lakers trailed 87-71 heading into the fourth… Williams, Wagner, Stephenson, Caruso, Machado lineup… McGee, Williams, Bonga, KCP, Machado lineup… They got some good minutes against the Jazz starters…

DB thanks for the whole season this must really be a chore this last month but you always deliver.

Finally some Bonga time with a little Mo.

Williams always seems to do something good so does AC and there should be a spot for those guys in the league next year.

That Zubac trade is looking dumber by the minute but he might have hurt our ability to tank.

DB - thanks for covering the G League exhibition games

Good to see more energy, hustle and passion on the floor

Acknowledge that Dell Demps’ antics affected the players but it also means that somebody values their talent. How many players in the world are playing in the NBA

Thanks, DB!

Caruso may be earning himself a min contract upgrade from the two-way ranks.

My thoughts exactly. I haven’t been committed since BI went down.
