All of Gerritt Cole's suitors are thanking the Houston manager for saving his arm for next season.

have to think that by winning, ownership/management may feel they have more leeway/goodwill to allow Rendon and Strasburg (player option) to walk.

What is up with Cole wearing a Boras hat after the game last night telling reporters he is not an employee of the team? He could not have waited a few days? Seems like a massive dbag move.

The Lerners have spent money, and they even made a pretty big offer to try to keep Harper. I think they keep one of them, but not probably not both.

He went out with a little more class than that.

Twitter

He seems like a good guy, so I can forgive him for the Boras hat.

He didn't want to answer questions after a toss game 7 loss. One that he probably believes would have gone differently had he been put in the game. I can't be mad at a guy for being emotional considering the circumstances.

CBS Sports: 10 way-too-early predictions for 2020 MLB season

Quote:
8. Reds win NL Central

My guess is the front office in Cincy takes an aggressive approach this offseason and it translates to success on the field.

The Reds endured a disappointing campaign in 2019 after being active last offseason and during the season as well. Each of their adds produced at a high level, including a bounce-back All-Star season from Sonny Gray. They will have a three-headed monster leading the staff in Gray, Luis Castillo and Trevor Bauer, while Eugenio Suarez will look to build off his 49 home runs in 2019.

St. Louis should be favorites to repeat as division champs, but the Cubs have a new manager, Milwaukee has pitching issues and Pittsburgh is rebuilding. This division is right there for the taking.

Oh, Trevor Bauer was a monster for the Reds, all right!

Seriously though, I know he has great stuff, and if they get the 2018 Cleveland version of him next year, they could challenge for 90 wins.

just my gut, but I expect Bauer to be very good next season....just coming in clean to spring training with the team and he is supposed to spend some time @ Vanderbilt with Sonny and Derek Johnson. Also, do not be putting your arbitrary win caps on the Reds.

I think Rendon, Stasburg and Cole are all Boras clients....and that sucks for baseball fans that hate waiting until February to find out where players land. I would be just as interested in Strasburg as I would Cole if you could get Stasburg on a year or 2 shorter deal.

True, but you know that Boras will want four to five years minimum for Strasburg. He'll probably get it.

The Nats and Boras have a very strong relationship. Also, regarding Strasburg, if he's opting out of a remaining 4 years and $100MM, he's most definitely going to want at least 5 years and at least $25MM per year. And he'll get it, too, even if he's missed a lot of time due to injuries. There is such a dearth of true ace starting pitchers on the market, and he and Cole are going to cash in big time. Heck, even Ryu could get overpaid by someone.

the starting pitcher market will be interesting. Like you said, there are few true Ace pitchers available, there are several guys that could hold down a #2/#3 spot in a good rotation, and even more vets to fill out the back end of a good rotation. Will guys like Keuchel, Miley and Gonzalez struggle again to find decent money as they did last winter?

I thought it was classless, but that wouldn't preclude me from wanting him on the Dodgers.

I think you can add Ryu to the list.

Strasburg opts out, as expected. Aroldis Chapman and the Yankees agreed to an extra year added to his deal (at $18MM for the last year), so he's now signed through 2022.

I recall the first time I watched Faulk in college....I was mesmerized. I had never seen anyone run the ball with such ease....breaking off big runs at will. I was in Junior High School (1992) and we played our games on Thursday nights, and ESPN would have 2 games (an east coast and west coast) game on Thursday night. That night it was SDSU @ BYU, and Faulk ran the ball for 300 yards. It was all anyone was talking about the next morning in school.

Btw, what about Donnel Pumphrey? Think he is going to give the XFL a try.

A couple of JD Martinez/Red Sox-related tidbits...

Bob Nightengale

@BNightengale

J.D. Martinez might have bolted from the #RedSox, but simply no team let on that they were willing to spend more than the $62.5 million Martinez is owed for the next three years. The RedSox certainly now will listen to trade offers for Martinez and/or Mookie Betts.

Martinez will make $62.5M over the last 3 years of deal, but he also has 2 opt out to go #redsox

Looks like robot umps have their own issues. Guys still argue strikes and balls and get kicked out of games. Could take some getting used to.
