Anthony Davis IS a Laker... It’s been a long offseason, but fans finally got their first glimpse of AD actually playing a game in the purple and gold...and he did not disappoint.

He played just one half, but finished with 22 points and 10 boards in his 18 minutes to lead the team. Get used to big nights from him. He and LeBron look excellent together.

The Lakers got off to a quick 11-0 start off LeBron and the Lakers size -- a theme we will see throughout the year. The Warriors are a smart team, but have lost key weapons and are trying to integrate new players, themselves. They had no edge to their game tonight. No KD, No Klay. No Iguodala.

After that strong start from the Lakers, they seemed to control the game all night. An occasional run by the Warriors, but no real threats. Meanwhile, the Lakers explored their new offense. LeBron found shooters and bigs for scores. They ran an occasional set play with brilliance. When shots were missed, AD was cleaning up the offensive glass.

As the stars for each team played just one half, the Lakers cruised to a 123-101 win.

The West will be tight this year. Only a few games may separate the top of the standings. The teams that can get off to a quick start will be at an advantage.

The Lakers had 32 assists with just 14 turnovers. Who knows how those numbers will go in the next several games, but that’s a very positive signal to start this preseason.

LeBron -- -- Looks like with the rotations, we probably see LeBron and AD starting and closing together and then each on the floor while the other rests in between. He had 15 points and 8 assists in the first half. Yes, having AD as a threat to roll and shooters around him will make for some big number assist nights. He’s going to pick apart defenses as they have to choose the poison (as long as Vogel plays shooters around him). You could see the D collapsing in the paint when Rondo and LeBron were on the floor together as they ignore Rajon...even in the 5-out lineup. Other than that, the offense definitely has a much more LeBron-friendly look to it. He was able to bully his way to the rim for scores with some consistency. If he can do that, even when he misses, AD is going to be there to clean things up. That’s just going to be immensely tough to cover. Defensively, having guys around him who bring energy on that end of the floor are what you want around him. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He attacked off an inside-out dribble, missed but AD follow tipped it in. He bounced to McGee on the pocket pass for a dunk. He attacked and setup AD for the layup. He lobbed to McGee for a score. He overpowered a defender in transition for an easy And-1. He posted up and missed a short hook. He kicked out to Green for a three in transition. He swished an 18-footer off the AD screen. He curled off Davis’s sideline screen, took the bounce pass as he got middle, drew the D and pocket passed to AD for the dunk (so nice). He posted up, attacked middle and drew FTs, he made one. Short on a wing three. He attacked trailing the break for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. With the Warriors pressuring the backcourt, we found him midcourt and he attacked the open space with speed and strength and easily powered in a layup. He missed a lefty push shot probing the lane. He drew FTs on a drive and made one. He missed a wing three, got it back, but fumbled it away. He muscled a layup in over smaller defenders when AD found him with a mismatch. He found Green for the open corner three. Offensive foul crashing the glass. He was fouled on a fade across the paint, he made one FT. Nice D on DLo to force a brick. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Davis -- -- The chemistry between LeBron and AD was quickly apparent. And it wasn’t just LBJ setting up Davis. AD was finding LeBron under the basket whenever he had a small on him. Watching these two evolve over the next several months is going to be crazy. Last off season, it was “We got LeBron.” This season, it’s now “AD is a Laker.” It’s a bit surreal watching him dominate. He was easily on a 40-point pace and it didn’t even seem like he was doing anything out of the ordinary. He wasn’t knocking down threes or deep jumpers. He was just imposing his size and athleticism. “He’s such a versatile threat offensively,” Vogel said. The offensive boards are particularly a killer for opposing teams, especially if they have to throw a big at C and a smaller player at PF. He dominated there in the first half. He played the entire first quarter, which may be how Vogel does his rotation, bringing LBJ back in to start the second quarter (unfortunately with Rondo). We ran AD at the C spot with under 4 minutes left at the end of the first half. This seems like how we will finish games. Go smaller with him at the C to disrupt two-man games defensively and give LeBron more space to work. He led the Lakers with 22 points and 9 boards in the first half. Get use to halves like that. Also, get used to him falling on the floor a lot. He fell twice in the first quarter, once in the second. I’d love to see a little less of that from him, but that’s just how he’s played in his career. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 9-16 shooting (0-3 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 10 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He missed a one-footed step-back 29-footer from the wing. He follow-tipped in a missed LeBron drive for the Lakers first score. Layup off the LeBron’s drive and dish. He missed a wing three in early offense but hustled back to deflect a pass. He recognized a mismatch and lobbed to McGee for a dunk. He took away an offensive board and dunked in an And-1, abusing the Warriors size, he made the FT. He missed a tough baseline turnaround. He threw down an airball or lob pass from Rondo. He dunked off the pocket pass from LeBron who came off Davis’s sideline screen to get the ball. He posted up in transition, spun and Rondo lobbed to him for the dunk. He cleaned up Dwight’s missed layup. Rim run and he drew FTs, he made both. He missed a 22-footer. He lost the handle trying to create. Called for an offensive foul trying to hold post position for a pass. Layup off the two-man game with Rondo, getting a running start at the rim. He was pushed to prevent a sure lob dunk finish off the two-man game with Rondo, he made one FT. He missed a three straight away. He spotted LeBron with a mismatch for a layup. He deflected an outlet to get a stop. He up-faked Green, leaned in and hit the wing And-1 jumper, he missed the FT. He missed a wing three at the halftime buzzer. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Green -- -- Quiet game from Green, but he’s a big target for LeBron on the perimeter. All of his shots were from behind the arc and he knocked down a couple. Defensively, he helped out on the glass and while he could be disruptive with his length, you did see him give up a straight line drive from the perimeter. Giving up some easier drives than you’d expect is definitely something he will do. Hopefully, however, our defense behind him negates some of that and his team D shines. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting from three to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed an open corner three. He drained a sideline three in transition when LeBron spotted him. He missed a wide open three from the same spot. He panicked and threw a pass away. He sank an open corner three. He missed an open three from the top of the arc. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

McGee -- -- Our McGee/Howard duo combined for 19 points and 22 rebounds in 35 minutes. They set screens, rolled, looked for lobs and easy hoops around the rim. McGee didn’t miss a shot as he was dunking. Having two vertical threats in AD and McGee on the floor at the same time should be really disconcerting to the D. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-5 shooting to go with 13 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He dunked off the screen-roll with LBJ. He finished the backdoor lob from LeBron. He threw down a dunk off a lob behind a smaller defender. Second Half: He made a hook across the lane. He dunked on a leak out. Nice hands disrupting a two-man sequence to get a stop.

Bradley -- -- “I liked the defensive presence JeVale and Avery gave us,” Vogel said. I imagine that’s who starts the season at the PG and C spots. They are better defensively and that’s been the emphasis. “Steph gets his first touch of the ball and that guy’s right under his chin,” Vogel said of AB. “That sets a tone for our defense.” A little bit of foul trouble had him sitting early and Rondo in sooner than what should be normal. Bradley didn’t score, missing a couple of jumpers and a drive. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a 21-footer to start the game. He missed a layup off a hesi in transition. He missed an open sideline three. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Howard -- -- As long as he hit the boards, bangs bodies and plays the veteran bigman role, he’ll bring some impact to the team. He’s lost some of his explosiveness. If you wanted video of him the last few years, you will see more finesse finishes than you have from him in the past. He can’t always play above the rim like he used to. He struggled with his touch around the rim tonight and it seemed his timing, as well, on occasion, but he was a threat and able to get to the line. He and McGee combined for 35 minutes, and both were giving double-double type of minutes out there. He had opportunity tonight for a bigger scoring game, but wasn’t able to convert on some of the iso sequences. I just want to see him knocking people around, playing physical and being a good teammate when on the bench. I love that he’s coming off the bench now, that should help him adapt to a new role as role player. Hopefully, when we have our down moments this season, he’s a good teammate and not rocking the boat. Not playing in the fourth and we’re losing, cheer on your team. Earn respect again by doing the little things. Hustle, give the team second chances, make plays on D, keep quiet at the fans will be on your side, Dwight. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting (3-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: Great job battling on the offensive glass to draw a foul. He missed a layup but AD dunked it in. He fumbled a drive and dish from Rondo. He missed a jumphook flashing to the ball. He missed a tip. He reset the offense tipping out an offensive board. Second Half: He ran over a man on the two-man game, offensive foul. He was fouled on an And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He drew FTs trying to attack across the lane on iso, he made one. He posted up and missed the lefty attempt off the glass. More FTs as Caruso set him up off the two-man game, he made one. He dunked off the drive and dish from Caruso. He drew FTs on iso, he made one. He finished the lob from KCP.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Kind of a typical KCP preseason/early season game...which isn’t a good thing. But it’s just one game. He did have some nice passing tonight, including a little lob to Dwight in traffic in the second half. I have a bit more optimism with him this season to get off to a stronger start. I think once the offense gets comfortable, then he will and hopefully all the shooting work he’s put in will pay off early instead of at the tail end of the season. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a three from the top of the arc on a busted sequence. He got tapped on a corner three off some nice weakside screening. He missed a reverse. He missed a wing 17-footer coming off a screen. Second Half: He outlet to McGee leaking out for a dunk. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He curled into the paint and lobbed to Dwight.

Caruso -- -- Really want to see him with the starters. He gives the team defensive energy, but also more offensive threat when he’s aggressive. That’s the combo we need. Plus, he’s shown excellent off ball chemistry with LeBron. They tried to run some sequences for him off ball but the Warriors were ready for those, which shows some respect for his game (they did try to sign him this offseason). Great job getting to the line where he went 5-5. That shows his aggression. There was a play early on where he passed up on a three, passed up on trying to finish, then threw the ball away. After that, he got more aggressive as a threat and it opened things up for him. Love seeing him aggressive, but also playing with changes in speed and pace to manipulate the D or allow is rolling big men to get into the pocket more. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He passed up two shots and threw the ball away. He knocked a bounce pass away as they tried to backdoor him. He attacked to his right on the other end and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He got his man in jail and drew FTs being aggressive, he made both. He swished a three trailing the break. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Hesi to let the D make a decision on the screen-roll and he set up Dwight for FTs. Aggressive on the drive and he drew more FTs, he made both. Aggressive attack again, he drew the D and dumped it to Dwight for the dunk. He attacked at the end of the quarter and couldn’t finish. He no-looked to Norvell for a three off the set play. He spotted his big diving and hit him for a layup. He picked his man on the perimeter, pushed it out and fed a big for FTs. He smothered his man in the corner to force a bad pass and turnover.

Rondo -- -- Not thrilled seeing him out there with the closing rotation in the first half. We went with AD at the C during this stretch to help the floor spacing, but they were sagging way off Rondo and mucking up the 5-out advantage. No floor spacing and that hurt LeBron’s ability to pick a defense apart. There is clear chemistry with AD and Rondo. That can’t be denied. They have familiarity with each other and teamed up for lobs and screen-rolls. Early in the season, this may be a little advantage as we slowly develop our offense, but in general we ran him way too much in the rotation scheme tonight. Defensively, he actually had some moments drawing a couple offensive fouls fighting through screens and swiping a pass in transition. I wouldn’t expect that with regularity. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He clanked an open wing three. He got it back fighting through a screen on the other end to draw an offensive foul call. Hard to say if he passed if after pulling up in the lane, but it went to Davis for the lob dunk. Hockey assist to set up the LeBron/Davis two-man sequence on the left side. Chemistry with AD next time down, who spun on the post, took the lob and dunked. His lob to Dwight was picked off. He scored a layup working the two-man game. He drew another moving screen foul to get a stop. He missed an elbow jumper. He fumbled a pass away under the hoop. He set up AD rolling for a layup. Dared to shoot the wing three and he swished it. He fouled his man curling into the paint for FTs. He swished a wide open wing three. He missed a wide open wing three, but hustled back and stole a pass. He turned it over throwing it into AD’s knees. He bricked another wide open three as they collapsed on LeBron. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Daniels -- -- A lot of minutes as both Cook and Kuzma are sidelined. He did well with them, sinking shots, attacking the rim on occasion and even playing some feisty D at times (2 steals). That defensive part is really key for him seeing minutes. Cook can hit shots from the perimeter, but isn’t strong on D. So whomever can show some scrappiness might get the minutes between those two. Doubtful he sees too many 25-minute 11-shot games this season. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-11 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He sank a corner catch and shoot off the baseline inbounds. He missed a tough corner jumper trying to beat the buzzer. He hit the top of the board on a corner three. Second Half: Great D to force his man into an airball. He forced a lob pass that wasn’t there, turnover. He curled off a screen, took the pass and scored a layup high off the glass. He buried a 30-footer in early offense. He swiped a pass, gave it up, got it back and scored the breakaway layup. He missed a wing three. He was run off the three line on a set play, but sank the wing pull-up. He fought over a screen and drew an offensive foul. He missed a wing jumper. He fouled his man on a straight-line drive. He drained another deep three from the wing. He missed an open wing three.

Norvell -- -- He played with confidence out there, which is good to see. No hesitation taking shots. He knocked down a couple of threes and showed his range. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-6 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He dropped a pass to a trailing Dwight for the And-1 layup. He stripped his man on the perimeter and was fouled, he made one FT. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three, forced it a bit. He missed a wing three. He got tapped on a wing pull-up. He swished the wing three on an ATO setup for him. He missed a corner three. He swished a tough step-back wing three with the shotclock low.

Stockton -- -- Garbage minutes for him tonight. With Cook sidelined, they added him in the mix. He sank a three and missed a midrange pull-up. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 7 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was picked from behind bringing the ball up. He missed a pull-up 16-footer. He sank a wing three on a kickout.

Cacok -- -- Filled in some backup big minutes with the Lakers going light on AD’s minutes and no Kuzma. He seemed a little uncertain early on, but then got into a rhythm as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-9 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He couldn’t finish in transition. Weak finish attempt off the two-man game. He hit a floater as the D helped on McGee. He took the bounce pass, spun and scored at the rim. His man went around him for a layup. He was blocked on a jumphook, got it back and scored. Layup when Caruso spotted him going to the hoop on the secondary break action. Caruso found him again on the break for FTs, he made one. He battled for an offensive board and kicked it out. He hit a jumphook on the right block.

Jackson -- -- He had the Lakers only blocked shot tonight, a nice recovery to swat a shot off the glass. McGee and AD should give the Lakers plenty of that this year. Dwight, I’m not as optimistic. But it was a little surprising we didn’t see more of it tonight. Jackson was aggressive in his minutes, scoring all his buckets at the rim. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He scored a layup on the break. He attacked the paint, Euro-stepped and scored the layup. Not close on the floater. He attacked, spun and missed, fought to get it back and scored the layup. He missed a three on a kickout. He recovered to swat his man at the rim. He was blocked trying to finish strong on a drive.

Vogel -- -- Lakers were off to a quick start. I liked the starting lineup. Seems that was being hinted on quite a bit with the emphasis on setting the defensive tone… Rondo in for Bradley, who picked up his second foul. Lakers up 13-5 after 5 minutes… Lakers up 21-7 with 5 minutes left when Howard came in for McGee, KCP in for Green… Lakers up 27-12 when LeBron sat with 3:28 for Daniels… The Lakers led 33-20 after the first quarter… He started a Howard, LeBron, KCP, Daniels, Rondo lineup… The Lakers led by 15 after 3 minutes when a timeout came… Up 14 when Bradley returned for Daniels to man up on Curry with 7:48 left… Up 12 a minute later, McGee in for Dwight, Green in for Rondo… Lead cut to 8 and Vogel called a timeout… He sat LeBron for AD and brought in Rondo for KCP. So McGee, AD, Green, Bradley, Rondo with 6 minutes left… Coach’s Challenge by Vogel to review a foul on McGee, which he lost pretty handily... Timeout with the lead cut to 4... LeBron back in for McGee as we go with AD at the C spot with under 4 minutes left… The Lakers led 59-51 at the half… Lakers shot a poor 4-20 from three in the first half. The Warriors 3-20… In the second half, he started McGee, Cacok, KCP, Daniels, Caruso lineup… Lakers up 13 when Dwight came in for McGee… Norvell in for Cacok, small lineup… The Lakers led 91-71 heading into the fourth… Dwight, Norvell, Jackson, KCP, Stockton lineup… Cacok in for Dwight, Lakers up 21… Caruso and Daniels in for Jackson and KCP… “Every coach has buy in this point of the year,” Vogel said, and mentioned he does feel the team is locked into to the overall plan and what their identity will be...

I don’t get the Rondo stuff
He was a positive in this game
I understand the fear of what theoretically could happen

But in this game he showed

- he will take and make the open 3
- he will find AD in the post
- he will run back on D fast and disrupt a pass on the break with his length

I like Bradley starting. I would like Caruso to start next game to see what he can do with the starting talent.

This was a good game by Rondo though IMO. Justified his role and contract. Between 20-24 mpg for him off the bench is fine if he continues to do what he didn’t in this game.

DB - Great to have you back with your detailed analysis and breakdowns!!!

As noted on the post game show, this team consisting of many veteran players with successful playoff experiences have gone beyond talented young players trying to establish their NBA game (Zo, Hart, BI) to experienced players that know by instinct what to do and where, hence allowing the opportunities to tweak and integrate needed nuances on offense and defense to win a ring

Eliminating/Limiting straight line drives to the basket with the opposition dominant hand is something that Vogel, Hollins and the rest of the coaching staff will be working on

Vogel and Kidd will work with Rondo on how to attach defenses when they totally sagged off him on offense. Having him very high on top of the key will expose Rondo’s offensive deficiencies and hopefully the opposition’s zone defenses. It will be fascinating how Rondo will dare against the likes of Patrick Beverly and CP3 on offense, against the likes of Harden/Westbrook and Curry when he is playing D. How will he be successful during those times.

Caruso’s aggressiveness and versatility did stand out

Let’s hope D39 will continue to be a good teammate. If not, he will have to face the fire/ire/displeasure/anger from AD and LBJ

We just swap three #2 picks for three #1 picks

Not only three former #1 picks but three consensus #1 picks. If you were to go back and do a re-draft of their drafts, Lebron, Dwight, and AD would still go #1. The same can't be said for our three #2 picks.

I like this team, we just need to stay healthy. Just like I said before, if AD is our best player, we have an excellent chance to win it all.

AD and LBJ. One is not complete without the other. I think LBJ is going to push for AD to be MVP and feed the beast.

By the way, the McGee-AD-LeBron front line is a tall athletic wall, we gonna eat up teams without legit 7 footers

Nets will be a good test with Allen and Jordan.

Since we're playing them three more times, we'll see how the Warriors perform with WCS and Looney back in the lineup.

Thanks DB! Queue the ominous music in opposing front offices around the league. I'm sure they were watching.

That first 8 minutes - I haven't seen the Lakers physically dominate a team that way since Shaq was a Laker. It goes beyond size, this was physical domination combined with superior talent. Draymond Green didn't even exist out there, he looked like some middle school kid trying to keep up with the grownups. You're right, teams are going to have to adjust their lineups.

I really liked that opening lineup. My only knock on the game is that I'd also like to see Caruso get a chance to show what he can do alongside the starters. Or at least the second string?

Very strong performance from the top of the roster and from the bottom of the roster tonight though.

Thanks again DB for your T&R!!!! I suspect writing these up is going to be a lot more fun this season!!

Thanks DB! Awesome work as usual.

Very happy with the result of the game. Did not like some of the combinations but Vogel is trying them out so IMO he can tell players "I tried putting you with player X, Y and Z and it did not work out." Particularly Lebron and Rondo on the court at the same time. Yuck on defense.

Liked seeing Bradley and Green starting. Set the tone defensively early. Get the other team out of their rhythm early then bring scorers off the bench to keep the lead. Agree with the length of Lebron, AD and McGee.

Would rather see Caruso be the first PG off the bench rather than Rondo. The bald mamba and Dudley in for Bradley and AD as the first two subs. As long as Daniels gives the same effort on defense as he did last night, I am definitely on the "give him some playing time off the bench" group. Daniels and Kuzma could light teams up off the bench.

Bury KCP and Rondo at the end of the bench. I do not care how much KCP is getting paid. Too inconsistent shooters.

Awesome as always DB! The games just don’t feel complete until I read your “Thoughts and ) Ratings”

I agree with Wolfpaclaker that Rondo was a positive in the game. I hope he can keep it up as we may need his superior ball handling/passing against teams like the clippers.

I also agree that I’d like to see Caruso have some time with the starters. He might be our best option at point guard with his solid defense, size, athleticism, and shooting.

I thought JaVale played really well last night, especially his very aggressive rebounding.

AD got pushed in the back and hit the deck on a semi fastbreak. Bradley came over and started to get on the Warriors about it and it looked like Draymond and AD started jawing at each other as well. I love it.
