We were at a party last night and the subject of childhood songs, mostly sang on the School bus and the like. It was amazing all the different variations on common themes and that after all these years those songs actually stuck with people. One thing that was apparent is that these songs differ from generation to generation, with folks in their 50's, 40's, & 30's all remembering different songs. Here was one of mine, sang to "Battle Hymn of the Republic:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school
We have tortured all the teachers – we have broken all the rules
We ransacked the offices and hung the principal
March on, third grade, march on!

Glory, glory, hallelujah
Teacher hit me with a ruler
We hid behind her door with a loaded .44
Now that teacher don't teach no more!

Found it: Battle Hymn

What are some you remember?

I had a very tall blonde nun named Sister Leo in 7th grade(1967)...we would stand outside under her window and sing We call her B O Leo to the tune of Mellow Yellow though I can't recall the words after the 70's

quite rightly... (she did stink)

There were regional variances which were interesting, and we even thought we'd hit upon an international one when the "Ding Dong" song came up, only to figure out that the Ding Dong song in India was completely different, but pretty cool.

Ding Dong Song India

Ding Dong Song North America

Ding Dong, you mother don't wear no socks,
Ding Dong, I saw when she took em off,
Ding Dong, (Variable rhyme)
Ding Dong, (Variable punchline)

Examples:

Ding Dong, you mother don't wear no socks,
Ding Dong, I saw when she took em off,
Ding Dong, She threw them in the sky,
Ding Dong, Superman Refused to fly.

Then after a successful rhyme and punchline the next person would have to come up with an original rhyme and keep passing onto the next person until someone could not think of a rhyme then of course that kid had cooties until the next kid screwed up. I can remember epic half hour long Ding Dongs where it was clear kids had been practicing memes to step up their Ding Dong game.

Ding Dong, you mother don't wear no socks,
Ding Dong, I saw when she took em off,
Ding Dong, She threw them in the washing machine
Ding Dong,Mr Clean refused to clean.

pass

Ding Dong, you mother don't wear no socks,
Ding Dong, I saw when she took em off,
Ding Dong, she threw them on the bus
Ding Dong, all the kids began to cuss

pass

Here are many more Ding Dongs

Kids Ding Donging
