Kuzma’s 41 in 29 Minutes… There’s an old story you’ve probably heard about Pat Riley talking to his Heat team 20 years ago. He stuck his head in a bucket of ice water and held it under for 2 or 3 minutes. Emerging with that inevitable gasp for air, he told the team, “You’ve got to want to win as much as you want to breathe.”

In the last game, the young kids on this team played like that. Desperate, with that sense of urgency, they wanted to win as much as they wanted to breathe. Learning to impose yourself consistently with that same attitude is what some of them most consistently struggle with.

We can expect Kyle Kuzma to always bring that level of intensity. That is simply how he plays all the time. Meanwhile, we don’t really know what kind of effort we will get from Lonzo, BI and Hart on a nightly basis. Will they hit the boards? Setup teammates consistently? Impose their will smartly and effectively?

Luke called it “playing with the competitive spirit” afterward, and the young Lakers did that again tonight.

The Lakers picked up speed in the second quarter as Lonzo sparked the team to an 8-point lead at the half. Kuzma had 19 in the first half, but it wasn’t until the third quarter when he blew the doors open. He was drilling threes, heat checks and manufacturing points at the rim. He was relentless and scored 22 points on his way to 41 in just three quarters.

It was the most points for a Laker in fewer than 30 minutes in the shotclock era (since 1954-55), according to ESPN.

The Laker PF position dominated as a whole. When Kuzma sat, Beasley took over. The two combined for 60 points in their 48 minutes at the PF spot. The Lakers never let up in this game, cruising to the 113-100 win over the visiting Pistons.

“I thought our guys did a really nice job staying composed, continuing to share the ball and continuing to make plays and ultimately winning by competing on the defensive end,” Luke said.

Ball -- -- He had the team-high +24 tonight. They subbed him out midway through the first quarter, then brought him back in to run the entire second quarter (same in the second half). He orchestrated the offense and sparked the team with a few sensational plays in that second quarter. A brilliant sequence with a block from behind on a jumper, then he turned up court and hit KCP in stride between defenders with a long bounce pass for a score. Highlight reel play. He’d have 5 points, 5 boards and 6 assists in the first half, on triple-double pace and was a +14. He didn’t ease off in the second half, more just orchestrated the offense and let the hot scoring guys roll. He had a couple other highlight plays tonight. A double crossover to get in the lane and score a layup around the help D. The other was a return slap pass to McGee on a give and go to set him up. He also had an 80-foot inbounds pass to Beasley for a score. The crowd was buzzing off those. Defensively, he was a consistent pest and often wound up in mismatches with Blake where he had to hold his own. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He missed a corner three on the catch. Got it back at the wing next time down and missed from three again. He grabbed a board and immediately chucked it down court over the D to Kuzma for a score. Change of direction to attack the paint, but he lost the ball, turnover. He missed a three straight away. Sensational play, blocking his man from behind (shot spiked off McGee’s face), he picked it up off the bounce, turned it up court and threaded a sweet bounce pass between defenders to KCP for the layup. He crossed over his man, got into the paint and bounced to McGee who was fouled. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He lobbed to McGee for the score out of the set play. He finally sank a three straight away when the D sagged off him. Sweet double crossover to get around his man, shortened the dribble once to avoid the poke away, then scored the lefty layup at high speed (that was sweet, bench was on its feet). Nice backscreen to free up McGee for a lob dunk (I don’t think that was a set play). He poked a ball free, tracked it down at midcourt and found a teammate for a hockey assist. Second Half: He slapped a pass right back to McGee on a give-and-go for a dunk. Turnover on a bounce pass. He grabbed a made basket, stepped out of bounds and chucked it the length of the floor to Beasley for a score. He swiped a post entry.

Kuzma -- -- Luke said he got up 500 shots yesterday. Yessir. I’ve said it before, he’s going to score 50 some day. This was easily a 50-point game. He could have hit that mark if we wanted as he had 41 in just three quarters, but sat for the fourth. Luke said it wasn’t a tough decision to not bring him back in with how his back has been. So how’d he do it? Great job changing ends early on for scores. He was hustling, out running Blake over and over in transition. His three ball wasn’t falling, however, early on. He had 12 points on 6-10 shooting in the first quarter. All four of his misses in that quarter were threes. He’d miss just one three after that. Back in for the second quarter and he finally hit his first three, just warming up. He’d have 19 points on 9-14 shooting in the first half to lead the Lakers. He heated up to start the third quarter with a couple of threes as well as an And-1 and had the Pistons on their heels. He was getting in the zone. He’d swish an And-1 three from the wing to set his new career high. He’d score 22 points in that third quarter. Just dominated Blake and the Pistons. You never know, but once Kuzma warms up and starts dialing it in like this, he could go on a long stretch of this. He did that last year. Once he gets the three ball falling, look out. Defensively, too, he was scrappy. Although we switched a lot and sent a lot of extra help on D. A lot of rotation by all the Lakers. Dominant game by Kuz. The Stats: He scored 41 points on 16-24 shooting (5-10 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He up-faked at the three line, attacked past his man and hit the floater. He missed a three in transition. He went around a guard like he was standing still and scored a layup. He missed a wing three in early offense. He leaked out after the challenge, took the long outlet from Lonzo, faked the layup to let Blake fly by, then scored. He missed a deep three. He dunked off the pass back from McGee on the break. He leaked out after a challenge, took the long outlet and dunked. He missed a wing three. He attacked strong to his left, stopped on a dime and had his floater goaltended. He sank a corner three on a kickout from KCP. He pounded the dribble and bricked the 15-footer. He sank an open 16-footer on a kickout from the post. He scooped up a loose ball on the break and scored a layup. Second Half: He plowed into a defender in transition and scored an And-1 across the lane, he made the FT. He sank a catch-and-shoot three straight away as he came off the screen. He stepped on the sideline, turnover. Quick first step from the wing and quick explosion up to draw FTs on the runner (that was a little like Lou Williams drawing the foul on the layup), he made one FT. He sank a wing three to force a timeout. He missed a floater. Low clock, he grabbed a pass behind him, fired and drilled the three. He missed an open corner three on an inbounds. He was fouled at the rim with 0.2 on the shotlock, he made both FTs. Slip screen and his layup was goaltended. His hook was blocked, he got it back, attacked and his layup was goaltended (that tied his career high). He swished a quick-fire And-1 three from the wing, he missed the FT.

Ingram -- -- I like how he let the game come to him in this one while still being aggressive. That sounds cliché, but it’s important for him to keep building good habits and not forcing things. He had 8 points, 6 boards and 3 assists in the first half. Early on, there were several plays where he normally would have forced a midrange pull-up but instead kicked it back to a teammate to reset the offense. This needs to be his M.O. more. Hopefully, it’s sinking in, but that’s the area I’m talking about. He ran the point to close the first and third quarters and kept the team moving the ball. Not a great night, but some little things that show positive trends. I love also that he’s found that ball-fake in the paint off the dribble as a new pet move. I think that’s 3 or 4 times now he’s used that since LeBron is out. Just another tool in the toolbox of a very young player. Keep adding to it. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 6 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He faced up at the wing, took a couple of dribbles to the middle of the paint, got around his defender and dunked with both hands to start the game. He missed a baseline jumper, got it back and reset the offense. He was called for a charge on the break, iffy call. He attacked the rim with the clock low and drew FTs, he made both. He grabbed a board, turned it up court and quickly outlet down court to Kuzma for the dunk. He attacked, missed a pretty easy one but got it back. He was fouled on the dribble for FTs, he missed both, uggh He missed a fade in the lane. He drop-stepped and was blocked by the help D. He attacked off the high screen, froze the help with the ball fake and scored the layup. He attacked from the wing and scored high over the help D. Flat pass across the top of the arc, stolen, dunk the other way. He lobbed to McGee for a dunk. He attacked at the end of the quarter and was stripped. Second Half: He attacked off the three line, drew the D and fed McGee for the dunk. He looked like he wanted to Euro-step, but didn’t have room and couldn’t finish. He probed off the high screen and swished the jumper. He settled and missed the pull-up in the lane trying to create something for himself.

McGee -- -- He was called for illegal D three times in this game. He and Chandler have been dinged on that quite a bit lately. No Chandler tonight as we just went with our other two bigs. We set up McGee for a couple of lobs. Luke said his energy has been improving since his illness. “I’m getting back more to my normal super hyperactive self,” he said. Good job keeping Drummond in check. He had 6 points on 2-12 shooting. Some good challenges by McGee at the rim. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: Nice rotation out to the perimeter to help get a shotclock violation. He took the advance pass at high speed too far under the hoop, but dumped it off to Kuzma behind him for the slam. He was yanked down with a foul around the neck, bounced up and patted the fouler on the back, flagrant-1, he made both FTs. He stretched out for the lob, controlled it and scored the layup. He dunked off the lob pass from Ingram. Second Half: He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He swatted a layup. Give-and-go with Zo who set him up for a dunk. He rejected his man at the rim. He missed a putback after battling for a board.

Hart -- -- So up top I mentioned how our youth need to learn to play with that desperation. Hart didn’t quite bring that tonight. The hustle plays, the push outs off rebounds were few and far between. I think he only had one pushout off a board and that was his best sequence of the night offensively as he hit McGee who found Kuzma for the dunk. Defensively, some nice work in the post. I hate it when we send a double to help him…we did that once and paid the price. Later, he showed Johnson that you can’t back him down, getting a great stop on iso D. He still can’t seem to go too many minutes without fouling a three shooter. He gave up a 4-point play tonight that was the kind of sequence where you could see the Pistons possibly starting a rally, but Luke called a timeout shortly later. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup after taking contact. He missed a three in early offense. He pushed out the board on the break and it led to a Kuzma dunk and a hockey assist for Hart. Good hustle to recover a loose ball at midcourt. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He threw a pass out of bounds on the break. Second Half: Way late to close out and he fouled a three shooter for a 4-point play. Brick wall as Johnson tried to back him down and Josh then forced him into an airball on the shot, just all over him.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Not an easy night for him as the Pistons took him out of his comfort zone. But he worked it out well. He had 9 points on 3-3 shooting in the first half and 3 assists. He scratched and clawed for 15 points, getting to the rim for some scores. He got out on the break for Lonzo to find him on a ridiculous pass for a score. He had a lucky one hit the top of the backboard and fall in. Some good work finding teammates, as well. He was even battling on the glass. I saw a great box out to take a defensive board when our D was in scramble mode. Just a scrappy game. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +21. The Action: He hit Zubac with a bounce pass after coming off his screen and Zu scored. He cut, took a pass behind him and nearly made the And-1 reverse high off the glass, he made both FTs. He drew an offensive foul challenging a jumpshooter who tripped him. He swished a sideline three on a kickout. Great job running the floor and somehow Zo found him between defenders for the layup. He attacked and found Kuzma in the opposite corner for a three. He probed off the high screen, the help backed up and he banked in the floater. Sneaky back screen to free up McGee for the lob. Second Half: He missed a wing three when no one matched up with him in transition. He hit Kuzma slipping the screen for a layup. He turned the ball over twice in the span of about 5 seconds. His pull-up jumper hit the rim, top of the board and dropped in. He attacked off the three line and hit the floater. He got tapped on a deep three (two-for-one attempt). He’d score a layup on the break at the end of the quarter. He chucked up a wing three and wasn’t close. Not close on a lefty hook across the lane.

Stephenson -- -- Quiet night from Lance, which can be a good thing. He didn’t try to do too much. He had a couple nice setups for his bigmen and really just kind of got out of the way of Beasley and Zo in those second units. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 seal and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He set up Zubac for FTs with an interior pass. Two-man game and a pocket pass to Beasley for the layup. He missed a three from the top of the arc.

Beasley -- -- Happy birthday to Beasley. He’s been through some tough times, so I’m really happy to see how his game is now finding its comfort zone. Some excellent passing from Beasley in the game, setting up teammates for easy scores at the rim. He only had 4 assists in this game, but it sure felt like more. He was moving the ball really well with some nice drives and dishes to set up guys. He just consistently made the right play. I mean, he drops 19 points and the first thing I’m talking about is the passing. That’s just how strong his overall game was tonight. In the 48 minutes of our PF spot, he and Kuzma combined for 60 points on 25-37 shooting. That’s some deadly tag team right there. I love that we’re getting him some lanes to go to work. He’s crafty with the footwork and around the rim on finishes. We pretty much put the game away tonight by going through him and winning those first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Made it look easy. Love it. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 9-13 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He blocked Calderon’s drive to force a jumpball, but he didn’t win the tip, uggh. He attacked to his left and scored the layup around Blake, just avoiding the shotblock. He crossed over Blake, attacked right and scored the layup. He kicked out to KCP for three. He missed a long pull-up jumper. Second Half: He pushed out the turnover and hit KCP for a breakaway layup. Good recognition on Zubac’s rim run to find him for the layup against a guard. He attacked off the three line, drew the D and fed Zubac for the dunk. He missed a pull-up from 13 feet on iso. He scored a layup off the pocket pass from Stephenson. He attacked left, spun middle and scored the short one. He swished a corner three on a swing-swing sequence, just beating the shotclock. He was called for a travel, not sure about that one. He grabbed the 80-foot inbounds pass and scored a layup. He iso’d and sank the pull-up jumper from the top of the key. Great interior feed to Zu for the dunk. He attacked from the corner and curled around the defender to bank in the hook. He attacked down the lane and hit the floater. He missed a three. He didn’t hit rim on a drive trying to beat the shotclock.

Zubac -- -- He and McGee passed the baton on the center spot in this one while Chandler rested. How nice is it that Zubac is giving consistent, quality minutes? He’s so young still, but starting to give that consistency you see from vets. He’s come a long way from his first few games this season. He got better last year as the season went along, but few people remember that because of how badly he looked to start. But he wasn’t playing this well. Now, it seems like everyone is expecting these kind of solid, two-way games. That’s huge. Offensively, tonight, teammates set him up for scores in the paint and Zu is always looking to finish strong whenever he can now. He also hustled with rim runs and working the offensive glass to manufacture some points, as well. Kid is starting to grow into a man. Keep it up, Zu! The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper. He took a bounce pass, stepped around the D on the dribble and scored the layup. Second Half: He was fouled under the rim for FTs, he made one. He had a guard on him on a rim run, missed the first attempt, got it right back and scored the layup over him. He dunked off the drive and dish from Beasley. He drew FTs in early offense, he made both. He missed a putback attempt. He dunked off the interior feed from Beasley. He smothered a drive and forced a turnover.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He came in for a couple minutes of garbage time and had a steal. The Stats: He didn’t shot and had 1 steal in 3 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swiped a kickout.

Wagner -- -- Just some brief garbage time run. He missed his only attempt. He and Svi were a -9 in their 3 minutes. Game was over and they never really got in it. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 turnover. He was a -9. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was called for a travel on the three line. He missed a three.

Walton -- -- Defensively, a lot of doubling the post and rotating to help on Blake. Luke said the team communication on that was excellent… The Lakers were pushing tempo early, but missing all their threes (0-6). They trailed 12-10 when Luke called a timeout… He brought in Zubac for McGee with 5:21 left, score tied… Lonzo out for KCP with 5 minutes left, Lakers up 2… Beasley in for Kuzma with under 2 minutes left, score tied. Stephenson in for Hart… The Lakers trailed 24-20 after the first quarter… He started a McGee, Beasley, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo lineup… Kuzma in for Beasley, Lakers starting to roll a little… A 16-2 Laker run… All starters back in midway through the quarter, except Ingram with KCP out there instead. Lakers up 7… Zu back in, Lakers up 9… Ingram in for KCP… They pushed it out to a 9-point lead to force a timeout… Lonzo igniting the team… They gave up a small 5-0 run to close the half. Some sloppy play and turnovers… The Lakers led 55-47 at the half. The Lakers had 40 points in the paint. They shot 3-11 from three in the first half, Pistons 6-24. Defensively, a lot of strong side help… Kuzma lighting it up early to help the Lakers extend to a 14-point lead and force a timeout… A 15-point lead was trimmed to 8 on two possessions as Hart gave up a 4-point play on one. Luke called a timeout… Lonzo out for KCP, Zubac in for McGee midway through the quarter… Lakers up 14 when the timeout came… Beasley in for Kuzma with a minute left. Kuzma had 22 in the third. Lakers up 16… The Lakers led 89-77 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Beasley, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo lineup… They quickly extended to a 17-point lead to force a timeout… They won the first 5 minutes, extending the lead to 20… Beasley playing great, picking up where Kuzma left off and putting this game away… Moe and Svi with a couple minutes left. They lost tacos with a second left… The Lakers are 3-5 since LeBron went down…

Thanks DB! Excellent write-up for an excellent win!

Kuz - awesome!

Ball - great!

Beasley easily!

Great games by all 3 Lakers. BI was sharing the ball and playing defense too. Fun to watch a blowout after looking so weak about a week ago.

While this was a game we should win it is good to see the young core learning how to win games.

FINALLY!!! A blow out win sans LeBron!

Detroit sucks but it was still a sweet win. All their player play one dimension only, no hustle to boot but Kuz!!! He's starting to flirt between 3rd option and 2nd option, his defense has improved too, or he's simply playing his heart out on both ends. And Beasley!!! he looking like last yr Knicks Beasley, him, Rondo and Stephenson can do some damage in the playoff against 2nd units

Thanks DB.

I missed this one but based on your recap of BI's game and stats, that sounds like an amazing game from him. I don't need 20+ inefficient points from you. Aim for Odom, not Durant and you will help your career and the team.
