My childhood Saturday mornings were spent listening to him in the WWF.

Damn, wtf. RIP Gene Mean as The Shiek called him. I'm surprised Bolea is still alive at this point. How many of the Character Era are left besides those two? _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Hesitant to ever invoke Chick's name, but insofar as WWF was concerned, Gene was the Chick of that org. Voice was instantly recognizable from other room like Chick's. A character in his own right. Last time I saw him was in the Andre documentary. He looked fine, so I wonder what befell the Mean one. Bobby Heenan was Gene's equal counterpart, imo. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Damn. I knew he wasn't well; Jerry Lawler (who is not well himself) mentioned that Mr. Okerlund was in failing health at some point last year.
I even enjoyed one of those damn Kevin Hart Mountain Dew commercials, the one where he's being "interviewed" by Mean Gene, even though he doesn't say a word and Hart does all the talking. RIP. |

Obviously no one can come close to Chick status in terms of personality, demeanor, tone, and coolness. But Mean Gene, you've always gotten pretty damn close. Hogan and Mean Gene were the Magic and Chick of the WWF.

Wrestling's greatest announcer. Better than Ross, Lawler, Monsoon, Ventura, McMahon, etc. Legendary promos with Hogan and Savage among others. A promo with Okerlund could certainly propel a guy to a main event draw. Legend. |
