Lakers trying to add Suns' Trevor Ariza in three-way trade

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers are engaged in talks trying to acquire Phoenix Suns forward Trevor Ariza, league sources told ESPN.

The teams have been working to reach an agreement with a third team that would take on Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as part of a potentially larger deal, league sources said.

The Suns want to land a playmaking guard and a draft asset as the price of unloading Ariza, sources said. Phoenix and Los Angeles have made progress in third-team scenarios, although no agreements are close and both teams remain active in multiple trade discussions throughout the league, sources said.

No trade can be completed officially until Saturday, when players like Ariza, who were signed in summer free agency, become eligible to be traded.

Caldwell-Pope has veto power on a trade, but the Lakers have shown a willingness to work with his agent, Rich Paul, if there's a deal that might increase his role and possibly get him signed to a deal this summer with a new team, league sources said. Caldwell-Pope is on a one-year, $12 million contract.

I don’t get it. Why trade?

That means we are giving up an expiring and ... a pick? Two expirings?

Obviously I love Trevor. So I would gladly welcome him back. TBH though not sure it makes us better. I still think KCP might heat up to end the season like he did last year. He is a good defender. Trevor is 33 with a lot more miles on him. He would be motivated here just like Tyson was once he got out of Phoenix.

I guess we need Ariza's size more at PF which gives Hart more minutes at SG.

Pure speculation here...

Ariza makes room for BI to be traded as we lack a bigger wing if BI is traded. SVI has been playing over Lance and company to showcase him. Lakers gunning for AD.

Lakers hear through back channels they can’t get KD so they go for AD now. I would take more depth and the likes of Harris + Harrell for more depths.

My first thought was is Ariza even better than KCP at this point? I guess I was probably thinking about 3pt shooting first, which I think KCP>Ariza, but obviously Ariza brings defense and experience KCP does not. As long as it's straight up, ok. I wouldn't add anything of value.

I was going to ask why we didn't sign Ariza instead of KCP, but I guess it was part of the Klutch wink-wink agreement.

That leaves little incentive for PHX to do a deal unless they just want to help us put which I doubt.

What is in it for PHX to trade for say KCP?

KCP is inconsistent and doens't have the length to guard against wings.

Ariza is more reliable and his length can help guard wings that Josh and KCP struggle to guard. Remember DeMar killing us? That might not be the case if we can get Ariza.

We can't trade for AD and sign KD.

KCP is good but we need size to guard star wings. I think this is fine if it's a swap.

I’m not sold this makes us better. Probably a wash. At least Ariza has playoff experience I guess.

Yup this was always a veto for Rich Paul not KCP. If KCP goes to Suns he will get more shots and could earn himself a long term deal next summer. He has a very limited role for us

hopefully that's why we're looking to make it a three-team deal

the third team will take KCP, we will take Ariza and the Suns will take a reasonable player from the third team

article says it would be a 3 team deal

article also states phx would want a point guard and a pick

presumably, KCP would be shipped to the 3rd team that needs a sg or might just desire an expiring contract, then the 3rd team would provide the point guard to phx
