Jimmy Butler played in Friday's game with the Minnesota Timberwolves against the Sacramento Kings, but he viewed it as a "fork in the road" and was prepared to begin sitting indefinitely if the franchise didn't fulfill his trade request.
The Wolves were informed that Butler would stop playing.
Butler was traded the next day to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported that the Wolves were prepared to trade Butler after last Wednesday's game and began soliciting final offers. The Athletic reported that Butler was almost held out of Friday's game due to traction on a possible trade. |
Wonder how Butler could get away with holding the Timberwolves hostage like this?
This has got to be a fineable offense.
How did Butler not get fined for requesting a trade? |
Players can ask their teams to trade them; they can only be fined by declaring that publically.
Butler got around it by leaking his request to reporters, so it always came from anonymous sources.
The Twolves caved because the situation was becoming toxic, and Butler can become a free agent after this year. When Butler spoke to reporters on the record, he always denied he was asking to be traded, so it was difficult for the NBA to fine him. |
