Cavaliers fire coach Tyronn Lue after 0-6 start

The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired coach Tyronn Lue after the team got off to an 0-6 start this season, a source confirmed to ESPN.

After firing Lue, the Cavaliers are planning to promote Larry Drew to interim coach, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Athletic first reported Lue's dismissal.

The 41-year-old Lue had a 128-83 record in three-plus seasons with Cleveland. The Cavs went to the Eastern Conference Finals the last two seasons and won the NBA championship in 2015-16.

The Cavaliers lost LeBron James to free agency this offseason, the second time that the superstar has left Cleveland. The first time the Cavaliers went from 61 wins with James in 2009-10 to 19 wins without him the next season.

Spoelstra is the only coach to have been able to survive LeBron’s departure.

I expect his salary had a lot to do with it as well. They gave him a 5yr/$35 million contract extension two years ago after winning the championship. No need to pay that much for a coach with that team. Just hire a young coach with a focus on player development for now.

Now, I'm thinking if Luke gets fired does Lebron want Lue?

I lean towards no.

I mean if he wanted Lue has his coach he wouldn't have left the Cavs to begin with.

Yeah I saw the back and forth on Twitter this morning. And now it’s official per Woj

Cavs make Lue firing official, Drew interim coach.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1056615947241431041?s=21

It’s not like I thought Lue was the strongest coach in the world. But I do think it’s fairly ridiculous for him to have lost Kyrie and then LeBron in succession but yet be able to keep going like nothing happened I mean...

Would love to see Lue back with the Lakers as the Lakers top assistant, Cleveland firing him was a premature stupid move cause they knew they stood no chance this season with no LeBron and Collin Sexton underperforming.

Did him a favor....coaching a team in the post Lebron era means tons of losses.

I agree....probably long term best for him. Lebron and players keep talking positive about him...he will get another chance. Listened to NBA Radio, and Bobby Marks compared it to the firing of Lawrence Frank in Brooklyn....described it more as a "mercy" termination.

Joking around, cavs should hire B.Scott, features K.Love heavy offense, let Sexton do whatever he wants and... tank

They fired him because he wasn't okay with resting his veterans and tanking
