The Lakers defining feature in the Lebron era looks to be implementing Showtime 2.0 - trying to outrun the league and push the next evolution of NBA pace. Keeping up with the Lakers track meet offense as it develops over the season should be a fun and fascinating topic.

To start out, here's a piece written by LG's own Mike Garcia for the BBall Index on the Lakers preseason two-tiered fast break: link.

I'd be shocked if they didn't lead the league in pace this year. They might end up being the fastest team we've seen in the modern era.

I think that was the case last season until Lonzo got hurt.

#1 in pace and then dropped to #3, if I’m remembering correctly.

Lebron and/or Rondo on the court should help this season when Lonzo is not on the court.

Correct. New Orleans also went supernova in pace to end the year once Cousins went down and finished #1 at 101.6 possessions per game, to which Rondo was a key contributor.

A lot of people act like Rondo leaving New Orleans isn’t a big deal, we’ll see how they do without the guy who was responsible for making that team overachieve.

Tbh, a healthy Davis embracing his role at center with Mirotic spacing the floor seemed more key than Rondo.

Pace is the only way we can go far this season unless someone like KCP or Svi turns into Klay, Lonzo starts shooting threes with accuracy and volume, and BI also becomes a sharpshooter.

Otherwise it will like Ali going against Foreman in a straight up punching match.

We run the better teams into the ground with pace and depth. Two or even three shifts of hockey substitutions... until they are tired... and hopefully Ingram and LBJ get the best players in foul trouble.

Efficiency was up with increased pace last night:

Quote:
Cranjis McBasketball
@T1m_NBA
The Lakers had 36 transition possessions today and scored 1.167 points per possession on those chances. Transition accounted for 29.5% of their possessions today. That's the way to work around bad half court offense.

It’s why securing defensive rebounds will be extremely important for this offense. Once we get the board, we go flying on the other end.

And even with those issues they still managed to get out in transition for 30% of their possessions. It's pretty crazy to imagine what they could do with better defensive rebounding.

The Lakers keep possessions moving:
Quote:
Darryl Blackport
@bballport
The Lakers averaged 11.5 seconds per possession on offense last night. That's a faster pace than any game by any team last season.

And Lebron is adapting quickly:
Quote:

@presidual
Thread: Surrounded by more playmakers in a new offensive system, we saw LeBron deployed in a different way as a Laker.

He played 37 minutes last night, the same as he averaged last year. But his time of possession was just 4 minutes, down from 6.7.

Will be interesting to see how long they can keep it up. Can't picture LBJ playing a full season at that pace for those minutes.

The league and the Lakers may not give your fingers a rest anytime soon:

Trying to dig into the scoring explosion in the NBA. It is a confluence of a lot of factors
1) Pace is way up -= All but 5 teams are playing faster than the fastest team last year
2) Shooting is way up - Last year one team shot 40% on catch and shoot 3s and 10 have so far this
