Correct me if I'm wrong, but we could've had a Jules/Lebron/PG/Dlo/Zo core with Kuz off the bench if we played our cards right, no?
This is assuming we go after PG when he demanded out of Indy by including BI in any potential deal, don't trade Dlo, don't mess with Jules' playing time in that last year, meaning the relationship with their agent never sours. We still make the deal with the Cavs for JC/Nance. But would we still have been able to create enough space for Lebron with PG and Jules' cap holds + not outright trading Deng and Mozgov (stretch provision instead)? Or maybe we're able to trade one of the two more easily with picks attached last summer?
I think about this dream scenario all the time but spare myself more pain by not actually doing the math.

I feel the same way. Their bizarre roster construction after signing LeBron has certainly not inspired confidence. The bad blood between Pelinka and Mintz was counterproductive and contributed to the unceremonious exits of Randle and Russell. They couldn't get a meeting with Paul George. If Paul George had been traded here, I would been concerned over this petty feud affecting the Lakers chances of re-signing him.
It really is a big free agent signing/trade to pair with LeBron or bust. If their plan B after not signing George to go with LeBron is any indication to go by, I definitely don't want to see their plan B again.
If missing the playoffs or a poor showing in it results with Luke getting canned, I hope the nightmarish scenario of an old-school retread hire like Mark Jackson never comes into fruition.

That's what makes it more frustrating. You sign the best player in the world but make questionable moves in providing him support. Besides the what if games of Randle, Russell, Lopez, and George, you can also look at the lack of common sense moves to begin the season. For example, the lack of a backup center was costing wins and the Lakers are fortunate Tyson Chandler was released so unusually early. LeBron is in his advanced age and has missed the most games of his career this season. These things add up.
He is getting recognized for his PLAY around the league. Love that. For the one dumb decision he made with swaggy, and all the scrutiny and hate around that situation, he could have easily caved and faded away into obscurity like many of his detractors wanted. Instead, he focused on his game, used all the negativity and scrutiny as motivation, and overcame it. He has a ways to go as a basketball player and as a person but you can see why this kid likes the big moments. It's no surprise why he takes the big shots at the end of games hit or miss. It takes a lot of self belief and confidence to get where Dlo is today from where he was when he got traded.
