Referees would no longer "need to make a judgment call on whether a defender was 'between' the offensive player and the basket, or, if a defender is heads of the player being fouled but not 'between,' the offensive player and the basket, whether such defender had the opportunity to position himself between the ball and the basket." |

I'm confused about the new clear-path rules. Does this mean that any time a defensive foul is committed during a transition opportunity it would be considered a "clear path" foul?

maybe the NBA can get the NFL's help to release one of their top notch guidance videos that will clear everything up for us.  |

As I understand it, all three conditions must be met. The big change is that there is no clear path violation if a defender is ahead of the player who gets fouled. The defender does not need to be between the offensive player and the basket, but instead just ahead of the offensive player on the court. It's a bright line test. The additional change is that the possession does not need to start in your own backcourt. If you steal the ball in the other team's backcourt and drive to the rim, a foul from behind is a clear path foul. |
