I like shooters. Not worried about the wingspan. I'll just pretend he's a taller Steve Kerr with the same arms.

Good, we don't need a rookie point guard backing up our sophomore veteran. We're at a point where we shouldn't be counting on rookies for huge roles, shooters and high IQ, good culture players are just what the Lakers need.

LaVar's head probably exploded Scanners style when he read this guy's name as the guy they picked instead of his son.

I'll also add that he's a 20 year old 4 year college guy. Because he started there at 16.

Sasha 2.0 with hopefully higher bball IQ and awareness so he don't get choked out by LeBron as Kobe did to Sasha.

Just my belief but I believe it is easier to shoot with shorter arms. The form is more compact and simpler to maintain proper technique.

Think of tall pitchers with gangly arms. Harder to maintain proper fundamentals and control their pitches.

Against who? What size? I see him defending good more so against point guards and small shooting guards.

@T1m_NBA
Svi's doesn't have the length you want on defense. Slight negative on D per PIPM last year but that'll probably get a lot worse & that length issue more pronounced in the NBA. FWIW, his spot up & off screen defense this year was awesome and he held his own defending the PnR

Opponents shot 25% on spot up attempts with Svi defending them, and 3/22 off of screens

Time to watch *all* the film

Early Svi defensive notes:

- Closes out v well
- He's exactly where you want him positionally like 95% of the time
- Tags roll men & recovers well
- I'm seeing him do a lot of talking & pointing to switch
- Defends w/feet, doesn't commit dumb fouls on drives
- Hops around on D

I'm loving seeing him actively blow up pin downs and other screening actions and have the awareness to tag roll men when he should & recover under control.

Quicker guys can get buy him & bigger ones can finish over him, which will be more of an issue in the NBA. But he's not a turnstile on D & I see why his primary defensive data looks the way it does.

I'm also seeing a lot of him needing to defend guards after switching, and he's doing a pretty good job. He's a solid team defender.

He doesn't have great length, but I'm seeing him use his hands well. He's clearly smart & has a good defensive IQ.

It probably won't matter much, but his post defense is good. Good technique on 3/4ing high and getting behind on the pass and contesting well. Data backs it up too.

Another thing that probably won't make much of a difference but is an example of his IQ is him being switched onto a non-shooting big, who he did a nice job letting roam the perimeter while he helped teammates inside w/o losing track of his guy.

He does a good job mirroring on-ball and such a great job defending shooters off of screens. Fights through well, reads the opponent & anticipates well, and is in position & even making blocks on the final shots.

And he moves his feet surprisingly well on the perimeter. Shuffling and denying 1 pass away w/o being back cut or blown by.

Just saw him contain Jevon Carter in space & almost block his shot after 10 seconds of Carter trying to get past Svi in iso, followed the next possession by a good box out of WVU's center after a switch

I'm really with how little he's fouling while still being able to contest and how he's able to recover if he's ever out of position. He's not giving anything away

Enjoy.
