I have friends who stay relatively connected to Toronto basketball rumors stuff and they are saying that a sign-and-trade Dennis S. to Toronto for Dragic has been discussed. The hold up is the enormous tax hit the Lakers would have to take on but Dragic is an expiring contract. I don't think the lakers will spend the money but they have always have liked Dragic. Doubt it has any legs (because we are hearing about it) but thought I should share..

Sign and trade isn't going to happen. Lakers aren't going to spend any more luxury tax, especially on Dragic. Nunn already has the backup job anyways.

That's just kind of a horrible trade for the Lakers in all directions imo.. The biggest is obviously the massive tax hit but he's also old and a major injury concern on top of playing the one position we're probably most set at. Not that he isn't a clear upgrade to some of those guys just not when you consider the price tag to useness.

IMO, if the Lakers are even remotely contemplating doing a s&t still for an actual player it would have to be a legitimate 3&d guy or a really good spacing 4-5. Nothing else really makes sense considering our already set roster and the amount of money they'd have to shell out. I personally don't think this door is even open anymore though as far bringing big salary back goes.

At the price it'd be freaking awful given that he'll be sharing minute off the bench with our youner guards.

Thanks for sharing.
I do think we need a 3rd string point guard.
Not sure Dragic is the guy though, especially at the cost.

My insider-sense is tingling and it says Dragic contract is going to cost Lakers around $57 million. So I’d say 99% rumor is already dead before it even started.

I don't see it either, especially when he's not clear-cut better than Nunn at this point in his career.

Dragic is on a 19.4m expiring deal.
Schro can make up to 19.2m without having BYC conditions triggered.

Uh, I guess salary wise, this rumor has legs.

And a sub to Russ or even yet another playmaker you can put next to Russ in the backcourt....whynot?

How about adding about 82m in taxes to pay a grand total tax bill of 114m?

Winebought...as in Jeanie better get nice and sauced up before you call her up with the trade.

He was traded to Toronto in the Lowry trade.

We should be concerned about the extra tax hit but he is on a expiring deal which makes it more easier to take him on.

Not sure if true but the Sportrac website says Dragic cannot be traded until Oct 05, 2021.

Got it. Thanks. Forgot that was a trade and not a FA signing.

That's sorta the thing I think gets lost - the FO has to look at it from a "is Dragic worth that much (extra) with the taxes?" What Dragic receives is one thing, but what the team is actually paying is another.

We're set as is except for some vet signing(s) to fill out last 3 positions. Nunn is more than adequate as the backup PG.

In the past, a player acquired in a trade couldn't be traded again for three months. They might have lowered that to two months with the compressed season.

If the Oct. 5 date is correct, we'd be able to do a sign-and-trade for DS from Oct. 5 until the season starts on Oct. 19th.

That said, with Westbrook and Nunn under contract, it's hard to see the Lakers spending another $80 million in salary and penalties on Dragic.

It depends of if Toronto operated as a cap strapped team or not. If they took Dragic into their cap space they can trade him immediately either by himself or aggregated to other salaried players on their books.

However it appears that Toronto operated as a cap strapped team, in which case, they would have to wait 2 months (ie till Oct) to trade Dragic freely in aggregation. However, they can immediately trade just him (w/o aggregation) even though they did not take him into cap space.

So a S&t Schro for just Dragic’s deal would work today, no problem.
Another note to make is S&ts cannot be conducted after the season starts. It is strictly an offseason tool.

Also all our FA signings are eligible to be traded till December 15....meanwhile since THT is considered a BYC player, he cannot be traded till January 15.

Note: Not completely sure how the condensed season impacts this new season. So I’ll clarify when I find out more about any potential new time table (as I found out recently with TPEs).
