Trying to lay off the fast food these days. But a burger and a shake will always do the trick.

Well, I do believe that they have a good model, yes. They obviously aren't reinventing the wheel, but their burgers are significantly better (IMO) than McDonald's or Burger King or something like that, they are fairly priced, and they offer good service.

I mean, I'm not equating eating an In N Out burger to a steak at a Bobby Flay restaurant or something (OMG that was divine), but it's just always good. Again, for me, anyway.

That’s cool. Not trying to knock it as bad, or convince people not to enjoy it. It’s just underwhelming compared to the hype if you come from outside the congregation so to speak.

Cheesy Gordita Crunch from Taco Bell
Chicken and Beef bowl/plate from FlameBroiler
Any Burrito from any Albertos/Alertos
Double Double from In N Out

Incidentally, Omar, since you mentioned fried zucchini, there is a joint that's really close to Angel Stadium called Burger Boy. If you're ever in that area, it's the best fried zucchini I've ever had, and they give you a whole big box-full of it for like 5 bucks. I can't really recommend much else on their menu, but when I want some fried zucchini, that's always where I go.

How did it become a cult phenomenon though? Because it's good.

Gordon Ramsay: "In-N-Out burgers were extraordinary. I was so bad, I sat in the restaurant, had my double cheeseburger then minutes later I drove back round and got the same thing again to take away."

Thomas Keller: "My first experience at In-N-Out Burger inspired me to do a hamburger restaurant. I've had it in the back of my mind for sixteen years but I haven't gotten around to it. It's kind of a secret fantasy."

Julia Child -

Larry King: "Everybody in L.A. loves the In-N-Out Burger."

Child: "Well, it's very good."

King: "Is that the best of the fast foods?"

Child: "Well, it's awfully good."

David Chang (Momofuku): "...an Animal Style burger at In-N-Out is a beautiful thing; the toppings provide a lovely textural and temperature contrast."

Anthony Bourdain: "What can I say about this place? It's the only fast-food chain that I actually like, and think is reasonably good for the world. Whenever I come to L.A.—in fact, one of the reasons I look forward to doing The Taste—is because as soon as I arrive I'll hit the airport In-N-Out, and on my way out of town, after finishing The Taste, I'll pick up another."

I can understand not liking a particular food, we all have different tastes. But personally, there's no way I'd continue to eat something for years because of hype or simply because other people are doing it. That's crazy.

I like The Habit as well, but IMO Habit and Five Guys tastes like a burger you could make at home. The patties at In N Out taste unique and I can't quite re-create them.

Also I recommend to special order In N Out fries "light well" cooked. Taste much better and consistent that way.

1.) Chicken queso burrito - Qdoba
2.) Orange chicken -- Panda Express
3) Custom bowl with sesame peanut sauce - Mixabowl
4) Double Cheeseburger with fries - Burgerlords
5) Garlic Parmesan Wings - Wingstop

None of those places have drive thru near me. But you can order ahead online and pickup (besides Burgerlords) .

Shakeshack opened a place downtown. I tried it once or twice. Didn't get any shakes (not my thing). The fries remind me of Del Taco fries. And the burgers aren't as good as in-n-out.

In-N-Out's quality and consistency has set the bar at a level that the national chains have a tough time matching up. That Double-Double's going to be just the way you expected it to be -- even at 10:30am when they open, it's going to be as good as the one that's served after a 18 car drive-thru caravan.

Interesting timing with this thread which popped up while we were waiting at the INO drive-thru today. Haven't been back for the longest time due to the wait times (and The Habit), but it was good to get re-acquainted with a classic again.

Thanks for the recommendation, usually we'll order fries as "light" but haven't tried "light well" yet. Fries "light" often results in decent fries that aren't burnt-crunchy-crispy, but then again, sometimes they'll give you a glob of soggy, barely cooked potatoes.

Apparently at McD's, if 'no salt' fries are requested, they'll cook up a fresh batch every time.

Man, American fast foods are so much better than what we get here.

We pretty much have McDonalds, Burger King and KFC, each of which is twice as expensive and not even as nice as the American versions, and with a more limited menu.

There isn’t really an English fast food except fish and chips, but that differs depending on the quality of place you go. Ironically Chinese owned chip shops always seem to be better ones.

I get what you mean. It’s like what we saw with Apple and iPhones. I mean, they are both good, and arguably best in class, but it’s not THAT good.

The idea of in n out has always been more important than the actuality. Even the slavish devotion to fresh, locally sourced beef (which is in and of itself an overrated concept) means little when you throw it on a griddle and serve it on a (bleep) bun, along with very mediocre fries.

I liked it. I agree that the fries were sort of blah. I was struck by the number of people who were ordering like six or eight burgers at a time. I guess you west coasters really like burgers. I don't think I've seen anyone buying boxes of burgers here. But then, I don't think we have any burger chain that is a mass production operation like In-N-Out. It was sort of fascinating to watch. The popular chain in this region (Whataburger) is the opposite in just about every way you could imagine.

Omar is correct in the "cultish" description. Part of the allure if In-N-Out is that cultish vibe, right down to the "secret menu" (which is the only way to really order there). And the main reason (at least to me) for the multiple burger order there is because the fries are so bad. Thus I get two burgers (always Animal Style and only Animal Style) and forgo those ruined potato things they claim to be French fries.

I thought kebabs were the thing in London. I read a series of novels in which the main character is constantly stopping off to grab a kebab.

Just had a roast beef with horsy sauce Thursday night. Out Arby’s is old school, we have the big hat sign. My now deceased uncle who had dementia referred to it as “the man with the big hat”. In college we had Hardee’s which is the same thing.

But I have to go back to my Midwest roots and cast a vote for Steak & Shake. Burger, fries and a milkshake. I last ate at one in Las Vegas but my son has gone to one in Santa Monica recently. If we are talking straight burgers then nothing beats Daniels in the Regency Casino in Laughlin.

not a fan of most fast food chains.... I can probably count on one hand how many times I had a burger at Burger King, Mcdonalds, Carls Jr, and JacknBox combined in the last 2 years.

With that said a few of my go-to items:
In n Out: double double - grilled onion, no sauce
Popeyes: leg, thigh, biscuit, and cajun fries
Farmer Boys: Chicken Club or Bacon Breakfast Burrito with shredded cheese
Del Taco: $1 Java Iced coffee
Chick-fila - deluxe chicken sandwich or oreo milkshake

Nothing "fast" about In-n-Out.

I once drove by the In N Out on sunset near la brea and saw that there were 0 cars in the drive-thru. I'm not a huge fan of in n out but I had to pull into it just to see if the store wasn't closed. Went through the drive-thru, someone spoke to me, and I had to get food. In n out in less than 10 minutes...first world miracle.

the high desert (Hesperia-Victorville) has an oddly high ratio of In n Out to per capita. And even though its one of the only decent places to eat around there, it still can get a little slow at times. There were many times when I lived up there when I was the only person in the drive thru line. It only really got crazy busy on days when there's a bunch of Vegas traffic stopping off for a pit stop.

We goto Loretta's for the Chili. I order fries and then pour a bowl of Chile over them and order a side of banana peppers to sprinkle across the top. Yum. Have you been to Loretta's sister joint over in Ballard? Kings Hardware? .39 cent originally flavored wings on monday nights. The place obviously turns into a zoo.

And, yep. I stop @ Pho Than Brother's in Fremont for Pho about once every two weeks. Can't believe I left them off the list.
