Why did Biden allow Trump to say we have the cleanest air in the world?

When a guy runs about thirty lies at you before you get to speak, you kind of have to pick your targets. No votes are getting changed whether or not that is rebutted.

Yeah, I didn’t watch this one. I’ll wait to see what sound bytes come out of this. Trump is fishing for some he can use in swing states.

I doubt there will be any significant bump. There was always going to be some natural tightening by Republicans coming home. Trump might go closer to 45 percent, which was always going to happen anyway.

The horse-race media will try to emphasize his non-unhinged behavior as much ass possible.

Biden performed well. Trump didn't take a crap on stage.

The cake is baked.

Joe did enough. Trump tried hard to smear him but Joe was cool throughout, stayed on substance. Trump just tried to make Joe look bad, no plan of his own. Trump gonna use any available government agencies he can use to campaign for him or smear Biden like the DNI. Everybody just make sure your family and friends vote

I don’t think this debate moves the polls at all. Trump would have had to destroy Biden to make any significant movement, and that didn’t happen. Not acting like a raving lunatic while you lie and say crazy (bleep) like accusing immigrants who show up to hearings as having a low IQ or commenting about kids stripped from their families “good” isn’t having an impact on anyone that wasn’t already voting for Trump. On the other side Biden once again put to rest any notion of “sleepy Joe” or that he’s too old to stand up for himself in this debate. So in the end this doesn’t move the needle at all, especially given how many people have already voted.

We'll see. But I would be very surprised if he doesn't close a few points over the next few days. The combination of his seemingly more controlled demeanor combined with the idea that he has his new "emails" moment (true or not) and the intelligence community perpetuating the nonsense that the external interference in the election is designed to hurt him is bound to help him at least a bit, the same way Comey did in 2016.

Did not like at the end Joe making the oil industry proclamation (even if it is a natural evolution of what he is proposing)...that will get alot of headlines that were not needed.

When Trump asked, “Who built those cages, Joe?”

Biden should’ve responded, “Who actually put children in those cages, Donald?”

Well said. He's making the correct decisions and saying the correct things in terms of winning 2020 politics.

Not gonna lie, it's not as left as I prefer and 40%+ of the country disgusts me. But the big lesson from 2016 is: you can't do anything unless you win.

Any debate is about exceeding expectations. Biden met them. Trump exceeded them simply by not being iut of control. Based on that standard, this was 2016, I think this would have been closer to a tie win IMO. However, I think the 53-39 margin is less about this debate, but more reflective of the country having already decided who they are supporting for the most part. That pretty much matches the national polling in general.

Exactly. The race has been remarkably stable. What worked in 2016 isn't working in 2020. Joe Biden isn't Hillary Clinton.

The Hunter Biden thing is so weird that only the Fox News bubble knows what Trump was even talking about tonight. This stuff means nothing to 60% of the public.

Trump exceeded expectations because he lied without screaming this time.

Yeah, especially in these times. I think in many discussions people would have about this issue they'd come away with the point he made. We shouldn't be expecting to use a finite resource forever, that is just insane. Especially when you factor in the pollution, and how things could actually be cheaper and better.

Its a natural evolution. Letting Trump lie about everything should have been a bigger sticking point, but instead we get Biden making a good point that will be turned negatively against him because national discourse is so dumbed down and toxic right now. We watched Trump straw-man his point in real time, and the news media will probably parrot it to get cheap clicks.

One other comment as an armchair QB...

When Trump kept pushing why didnt you get xyz done? and Biden said Congress...

After Trump said "sometimes you just gotta get it done Joe"

Man, it was such an easy layup retort there - "Take your own advice pal, you cant even get a new healthcare plan in place or the stimulus bill passed. Let me guess? Congress right?"

(Trump will say Pelosi...you say "Who, under your story, is a member of congress...so...congress.)

The panel on CNN thinks that this likely costs Biden a possible win in Texas. Obviously, he doesn't need it to win, but the race would be completely over if he did win it.

That takes being quick on your feet. Give Trump credit, for his age, Trump still has some of that sharp wit left. Biden just doesn't have that any more. I would guess the next Republican who wins after Trump will be under the age of 60. The GOP version of Obama.

An incumbent runs on his record. A new comer runs on change and energy. This may be the first time in our life times a candidate will win based on running in a return to normalcy.

Well I guess Donnie gave his word for once, but would like to see this in context:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1319466667676749824?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

[not that this means anything to me - so much bigger issues than some flip flop; it's like a guy who is bald looking at your beginning to thin hair line and trying to mock you for it]

It’s also easier to be quick on your feet an hour or more after it happened on a message board.
