With Kobe and Lamar on Max contracts is it wise to pickup a 3rd player that's going to demand the max?
That will be like $45mil just on 3 guys. I think it would be wiser closer to the time to trade Lamar for some players that can contribute to the triangle. That or sign 2-3 players in 2007 that can contribute and keep Lamar.
What are our options? |

In 2007 Lebron is a restricted free agent. So of course you can offer him the max, and should. But Cleveland will match. End of story. |

May not have to if we offer Odom and draft picks for a star like LeBron or Bosh or anyone else that may want to leave their team. Of course that player would have to want to come to LA, but who wouldn't. Most teams would rather trade away a player that plans on leaving so they at least get something in return. _________________ The great Laker Center Tradition continues.....Mikan, Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, Gasol, AD....Gasol. |

I know that "waiting" for 2007 or more realistically 2008 sounds horrible right now. It's obvious we are not a very good team at full health, and with two of our top three players out were have sunk to being the worst team in the L. It would be different if the 07/08 plan were some kind of a lock, but even that is a big roll of the dice. I say ditch it and start now. After Kobe, Odom, Mihm and Bynum, the supporting cast is NBDLish. _________________ "Why do you think bad things happen, anyway???" "So we have something good to look forward to."

I have come to the belief that most of the league's GM have decided they are only going to trade with us (help us) if it is a super good deal for their team. No "lateral" trades are gonna be made, only trades where we are getting bent over. _________________ "Why do you think bad things happen, anyway???" "So we have something good to look forward to."

Fantasy land.
Odom and draft picks does not equal Lebron or Bosh. |

Hopefully it could equal Rashard Lewis and Reggie Evans though. Or Lewis and Flip Murray. I'd do either deal NOW. I can't see Seattle letting go of Shuttlesworth for Odom, but there have been rumblings that Seattle would move Allen if the right deal came up. _________________ "Why do you think bad things happen, anyway???" The way it would have to work to get LeBron is he would have to make it clear he wants to leave. He would have to threaten to take a qualifying offer, and walk in 2008. It's unlikely. There would have to be an outstanding deal on the table for a sign and trade. I'm sure Cleveland would want both Odom and Bynum. Depending on how well Bynum is doing, the Lakers might refuse. It would have to be a max deal sign-and-trade. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. So you don't think that as soon as Lebron makes it clear he won't take the qualifying offer that they start taking offers? And that they won't get anything better than Odom and Bynum? Please.

If LeBron makes a move, he won't leave it to chance where he lands. He won't be carted off to the highest bidder. If he moves, it will be for a shot at Championships. Kobe has been to the mountain and conquered. So has Phil Jackson. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. How about Bosh says that he wants to be a laker the year he's going to be a free agent. Toronto doesn't want to go empty handed so they trade a signed bosh for our picked up option in kwame. Then we sign Hinrich and have one dominant starting five:
Bynum/Mihm
Bosh/Cook/Turiaf
Lamar/George
Kobe/sasha/wafer
Hinrich/smush
Not bad, we might not be able to sign those backups but who cares if you have a starting five like that. Unfortunately we're going to have to suffer these two years so that we can be in a better position to dominate. |

Do you realize the kinds of offers they will get? They'll let him go for Kwame? If you're saying Bosh forces their hand, then Bosh is screwing their franchise. Come on. Bosh for Kwame? |

HECK NO!!!!!!!!
If we are fortunate enough to grab a legit player to pair with Kobe through Free agency, then you trade LO for 2 REALLY solid role guys. ideally defensive guys. If you can trade LO for that stud then you use your $$$$ to sign those role guys. To have 3 guys at top $$$$$ is lame. LO doesnt validate 12mil even if you can sign another. We have garbage surrounding Kobe. We need to help our potential 2 stars out. _________________ Lakers Tickets |

It won't be up to him. The Cavs can deal him wherever they want.

This will hardly be the only team he could contend with.

They had a lot more talent then. Lebron would be coming to a depleted roster.

They won't even give up Bosh for Odom. Not going to happen for Kwame obviously.
They are going to do everything in their power to retain Bosh.

I generally agree with you, although while it's unlikely, even a couple of
pretty high-dollar players have played out the extra year to become
a UFA.
It's a huge risk for alot of players, because they've only made rookie
contract money... and if they get injured in that year they might lose
$60M-120, etc (depending of course on the player).
The difference for LeBron is that he's already made well over $100M in
endorsements alone.
So it's not nearly as much a financial risk for him to play out the last year,
become a UFA in 2008 and go where he wants.
If he tells Cavs' management that, he has the leverage to affect his
destination because the Cavs don't want to lose him and get nothing
in return.
Remember how the Cavs can pay him $20M or so more than other
teams if he were to become a UFA?
For LeBron, over a 7-year contract, playing in a big market like NY, LA
or Chicago may well be more than a $20M difference in exposure
and additional endorsement opportunities.
I agree with you that it's not likely that LeBron leaves Cleveland.
But it's very much in the realm of possibility. |

Certainly it is a possibility he leaves, and thus a possibility he forces a trade. But even when a player forces a trade, he can't dictate exactly where he is going... instead he might name four or five teams that he would accept. If if we were among them, there would be competition, and I have a hard time believing that Odom would be the best offer. _________________ -

There's the light bulb going off for someone...
Glad you joined us...
Lots of people are saying that we need NEED to wait til 07...that's straight up BULL...there isn't anybody that can help us that much that WON'T take more money from their OWN team...
We WON'T be better if we DON'T get better players...our current problem isn't the offense or coaching...it's the talent level...
We need a 2nd option...
We need better role players...
We NEED to make moves we can build on...
There is no one available for the time we are shooting for...KG will be on the down side of his career at that point...LBJ will resign...Bosh will resign with a better supporting cast...Amare and Yao HAVE resigned...
We are just being lazy right now...Kobe is the SHOW piece to keep sales up while we sit with our thumbs up our posterior PRAYING for a miracle and SELLING a bogus plan... _________________ Build around team players, not ISO players. |
