Are Byron Scott and the Los Angeles Lakers headed in the right direction?

July 13, 2015 by Carlos Clopton

In a recent interview Los Angeles Lakers’ coach Byron Scott said he’s byron_scott_flickexcited about the competition they have at every position.

This is something that is often preached by coaches, but it is hard to achieve. Coaches believe that competition is what brings the most out of players. So anytime you can create a situation where players are constantly competing, it works better for the team in the long run.

With a depleted roster last season, the Lakers players had little competition for time on the floor. Players knew if they were healthy, they would see playing time.

Scott believed that this caused the players to play more comfortably but without edge. When you play comfortably you don’t make those hustle plays that change the game. Competition has to be the force that motivates the team to work hard every day at practice.

Los Angeles Lakers Offer Roy Hibbert the Biggest Stage to Resurrect Career

By David Murphy , Featured Columnist
Jul 13, 2015

Roy Hibbert was an All-Star as recently as the 2013-14 season. Now the 7’2” center brings his defensive power to the bright lights and big stage of the Los Angeles Lakers with a chance to reclaim his elite form.

The Lakers front office first chased after LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe in the opening days of free agency. But as team general manager Mitch Kupchak recently revealed, there was a backup plan in place all along.

“Not knowing what would happen, we had a contingency plan set up with Indiana,” Kupchak said during a TWC interview with Chris McGee. “If we did not get so-and-so and so-and-so, then the deal for Hibbert would kick in.”

The Lakers’ fallback position was an extremely safe gamble—trading only a future second-round draft pick to the Indiana Pacers, per Lakers.com. The team will also assume the final year of Hibbert’s contract at $15,514,031.

Lakers Rumors: Team Interested In Kevin Seraphin
in Seraphin
by Alex Torres

After a free agency period where the Lakers missed out on all their top targets, there’s excitement in the air once again. The Lakers have a young core that has shown some promise in their first two Summer League games and they have a real shot at winning the whole thing.

All eyes are on the Summer League, but there’s still a few free agents left in the market. With the salary cap going up higher than expected, the Lakers have some room left to possibly make another move.

According to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports, the Lakers are interested in big man Kevin Seraphin:

— Marc J. Spears (@SpearsNBAYahoo) July 12, 2015

Seraphin averaged 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season. The 6-foot-10 center was looking to become a starting center after spending the last several years as a back-up. He has not had much luck in the open market, but has drawn some interest from several teams.

Lakers Rumors: Kevin Seraphin Would Add Much-Needed Depth to LA Roster

By Chris Roling , Featured Columnist
Jul 13, 2015

While the Los Angeles Lakers continue to march in the right direction this offseason, it couldn't hurt the team to keep the momentum alive by grabbing a role player such as Kevin Seraphin off the open market.

It's the point of the offseason where fans start to turn away. It makes sense, too. General manager Mitch Kupchak and the front office grabbed D'Angelo Russell in the draft to pair with Julius Randle. It then added stellar sixth man Lou Williams and even stole rookie Robert Upshaw off the market.

Yet the Lakers need to stay active, especially with Seraphin still being available.

According to Yahoo Sports' Marc Spears, the Lakers are one of many teams to have an interest:

NBA free agency 2015: A look at the best remaining free agents

DDN Correspondent Posted on 13 Jul, 2015 at 11:58:PM IST

NBA free agency 2015: A look at the best remaining free agents - The amount of free agency activity in the NBA since teams were permitted to start negotiations with free agents on 1st July is astonishing. No signings could occur until 9th July, and now, newlines are loaded with confirmations of player signings.

On 1st July, reports started circulating that Tristan Thompson and the Cavaliers were closing in on a deal that would pay the fourth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft a salary in excess of $80 million. However, a couple of days later, it was said the two sides were far apart with no indication regarding the sticking point.

Thompson filled in properly for the injured Kevin Love during the playoffs and is a valuable asset with his ability to post double-doubles in every game.

DeAndre Debacle Fallout: Mavs Turned Down By Kevin Seraphin

By Richie Whitt

ATLANTA, GA - MAY 03: John Wall #2 and Kevin Seraphin #13 of the Washington Wizards defend as Al Horford #15 of the Atlanta Hawks attempts a shot during Game One of the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the 2015 NBA Playoffs at Philips Arena on May 3, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Barring a last-minute change of heart – uh-oh, hold your breath – the Mavs will add former All-Star point guard Deron Williams today.

They will not, however, be getting the services of Kevin Seraphin. Turned down by a journeyman Frenchman who can’t play a lick. I told you the DeAndre Debacle had long, negative tentacles.

In the wake of getting stiffed by the Clippers’ free-agent center, the Mavs acquired Zaza Pachulia. He can shoot. He possesses some offensive assets. But he’s not truly a center. And, no, he doesn’t rebound nor defend or play above the rim. In other words, they still need a center.

That desperate search took them to Seraphin. Yuck.

Lakers in review: Roy Hibbert, Brandon Bass, Lou Williams join team

by ERIC PINCUS

First the team signed the NBA's current sixth man of the year, guard Lou Williams for three seasons, while also giving rookie guard/forward Anthony Brown a three-year contract (with the first two seasons fully guaranteed).

Soon after, the Lakers inked forward Brandon Bass on a two-year deal. Bass can opt out after the 2015/16 campaign to once again become a free agent.

The Lakers cashed out what was roughly $25 million in cap space, taking on two-time All-Star center Roy Hibbert from the Indiana Pacers in trade. Hibbert waived over $2.2 million of his trade bonus to join the Lakers.

Lakers' Summer League Mid-Way Point Observations

by Hannah Kulik 5h ago

As evidenced by the enormous crowds, these are not ordinary times for the Los Angeles Lakers as they participate in the 2015 Summer League games. There was great anticipation that we would see highly skilled young players who would inspire a fan base that is starving for a sign that better times are within sight. Many were saying this would be the best Lakers’ summer league squad in franchise history, one that was likely to win the summer league title. After all, eight of the players on the squad are expected to comprise about two-thirds of the regular season roster. The team features D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle, the highest draftees selected by the Lakers in over 30 years, players we hoped would stand above the many lesser-known summer league participants who were undrafted and will not even be playing this fall.

Byron Scott on Lakers' starting power forward: 'I'll let it play out'

FOX Sports

JUL 13, 2015 12:37p ET

Fresh off of a season-ending injury and with his dominance on full display at the Las Vegas Summer League, Julius Randle would seem a natural to start for the Los Angeles Lakers at power forward next season.

Not so fast, however, says Lakers coach Byron Scott. According to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News, Brandon Bass and Randle will compete for the starting gig, with Scott saying, "I’m hoping that Julius takes the lead and jumps on that opportunity to be our starting power forward." Scott added, "But I’ll let it play out."

Bass averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Boston Celtics last season. He's a solid rotation player who understands team defensive concepts and can fill the gaps in a lineup admirably. But Randle is the future of the Lakers; the more playing time he gets, the better. It should be that simple for Los Angeles.

Lakers' Summer League Report: Clarkson Impresses

Jordan Clarkson's consistency stood out in the Lakers' first two Summer League contests, while Julius Randle and D'Angelo Russell need time to acclimate

By Shahan Ahmed

Through two games of the NBA Summer League, Jordan Clarkson has been far and away the standout player for the Los Angeles Lakers, but rookies D'Angelo Russell, Larry Nance and Anthony Brown have already showed clear glimpses into why the Lakers drafted the trio in the 2015 NBA Draft. While not technically a rookie, Julius Randle also provided a view into the player he can be during his cameo appearance in the Summer League opener.

On the opening weekend of the Summer League, hoards of Lakers' fans streamed into the Thomas & Mack Center to paint the stands purple and gold. Fans of the LA Lakers are clearly excited by the youth movement on display, as at least six Summer League squad members expect to make the Lakers' regular season roster.

Robert Upshaw Working to Make Most of Lakers' Chance

The Los Angeles Lakers may be Robert Upshaw's final chance at an NBA career, and the 7-foot center fully understands that reality

By Shahan Ahmed

Robert Upshaw's last name may as well be "Upside." The Los Angeles Lakers invited the most promising defensive center in college basketball to their NBA Summer League team, and fans are giddy with excitement over the 7-foot undrafted center with mountains of potential.

Why did he go undrafted? Well, Upshaw had serious problems off the court. First, he was dismissed from Fresno State. After getting a second chance with Washington State, the center set a school record with eight blocks in a single game and stood out as the best defender on the collegiate level. In January, however, the embattled center was again dismissed for problems off the court.

Lakers' young players struggle against Knicks

July 13, 2015
|Updated 10:34 p.m.

The Lakers' Julius Randle, left, gets by the Knicks' Thanasis Antetokounmpo during the first half of an NBA summer league game Monday.
JOHN LOCHER, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS – The system in place does ultimately crown a champion of the Las Vegas Summer League, so it’s not entirely accurate to say wins and losses here don’t matter.

Teams such as the Lakers, however, are far more concerned with measuring progress, building chemistry and even developing coaches than they are with wins.

But one wouldn’t know judging by the Lakers’ mood following a 76-66 loss to the New York Knicks on Monday.

“I would discredit that, as far as wins and losses,” Julius Randle said. “In the big picture you maybe could say that, but we’re out there and we’re trying to win. That’s all there really is.”

After playing Saturday, the Lakers took Sunday off.

“A day off in Las Vegas was not a good idea,” said Mark Madsen, who coaches the summer Lakers.

News, Notes from Summer League Monday: Lakers fans boo their team

LAS VEGAS — Monday in Las Vegas and nothing has slowed down — this is Vegas, baby.

There was a full slate of games at the NBA Summer League, and the effort was still there, with players trying to make teams, impress scouts, and put on a show. Here is some of what we saw (notes are from Kurt Helin and Sean Highkin).

• Lakers fans again filled the Thomas & Mack to see their young stars, but this time they booed them after a brutal first quarter — the Lakers had more turnovers than points (seven to five) and shot 2-of-17, trailing the Knicks by 15 after one. The Lakers got back into it and made it interesting in the end, but their Summer League team largely remains the Jordan Clarkson show. (KH)
