Report: Lakers still a possibility for free agent LaMarcus Aldridge

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
Fri, 03 Jul 2015 9:24 AM ET

The Lakers are not out of the running in the LaMarcus Aldridge Sweepstakes quite yet, according to the Orange County Register, which is reporting that he met again with the team Thursday.

A meeting Tuesday reportedly focused more on off-the-court appeal to playing for the Lakers rather than basketball and he came away unimpressed. The team alleviated that problem in the latest session, bringing in only Byron Scott and general manager Mitch Kupchak and leaving out Kobe Bryant, who reportedly unwisely compared Aldridge to Pau Gasol in regard to his future role Tuesday.

NBA Free Agency Day 2: Winners and Losers
By Matt Moore | NBA writer
July 3, 2015 1:49 am ET

Day 2 of NBA free agency didn't have as many crazy signings as Day 1, but it did give us a lot of news. Some big stars came home, some big markets struck out swinging and what in the world are the Kings doing?

Here's a look at the best and worst from the second day of NBA free agency.

WINNER: SAN ANTONIO SPURS -- They might get LaMarcus Aldridge. Reports are that they remain in the lead on that front. More important, the Spurs got a verbal commitment from Tim Duncan to return for his 19th NBA season. Any day you get back the best player in franchise history and a future Hall of Famer who's still very good is a great day. The Spurs may not add a huge free agent but they will at least have Duncan and Kawhi Leonard, and as such are guaranteed to be a title contender next season.

LOSER: LOS ANGELES LAKERS -- The Lakers struck out on Monroe, Robin Lopez will choose the Knicks provided DeAndre Jordan doesn't go to New York, and they gained no ground on any key free agents. And yet, Thursday was a better day than Wednesday because at least they got a second meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge. That's progress for the Lakers in 2015.

Lakers Rumors: LaMarcus Aldridge Still An Option For L.A.? DeAndre Jordan, Robin Lopez Headed Elsewhere?

By Anthony Riccobono @tony_riccobono a.riccobono (@) ibtimes.com on July

LaMarcus Aldridge has no shortage of suitors this offseason. Getty

After seemingly falling out of the LaMarcus Aldridge sweepstakes, the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be back in contention to sign the power forward. L.A. had a second meeting with the former Portland Trail Blazer on Thursday night, hoping to sign him to a max contract.

Los Angeles was thought to be one of the favorites to land Aldridge before the start of free agency, but the big man was unimpressed by their presentation on Wednesday. When it appeared that Aldridge had crossed the Lakers off his list, L.A. asked for another chance to sell him on the franchise

Los Angeles Lakers: Time For Kobe Bryant To Change His Mentality
by Mike Pendleton 57m ago

Kobe Bryant has done legendary work for the Los Angeles Lakers during his entire career with the organization. He’s got five championships and one league MVP trophy (2007-08) with the Lakers, while the team has won seven conference championships and eight division titles during his time.

He’s the franchise leader in points scored and that includes a magical 81-point performance for the “Black Mamba,” but as the 2015-16 season approaches, with his career nearing the end, it’s time for Bryant to change his mentality.

Lakers reportedly meet again with Aldridge, apoligize for 1st sit-down
FOX Sports

JUL 02, 2015 4:16p ET

LaMarcus Aldridge is keeping his free-agent options open.

The LaMarcus Aldridge free-agency saga continues to take twists and turns.
One day after reportedly not being impressed with the Los Angeles Lakers' pitch, Aldridge met with the Lakers for a second time for about 90 minutes and the team spoke entirely about how it would move forward on the court, according to ESPN.
Aldridge didn't jell with Lakers star Kobe Bryant and the sought-after free agent disliked the team's basketball part of its presentation, the Los Angeles Times reported after the two sides first met Wednesday.

Free-agent roundup: Day 2 brings Wade resolution and Aldridge adjustments
By Eric Freeman

In case you missed these reports ...

• The biggest news of the day found Miami Heat icon Dwyane Wade, a surprise free agent after opting out of his contract Monday, coming back to the club at one year for $20 million. That's a hefty price for a 33-year-old guard without much three-point prowess, but Wade has sacrificed max-level money several times in the past for the good of the franchise. This deal also allows the Heat to avoid the public relations nightmare of offering the best player in franchise history (adjusted for seasons played, at least) a relatively low salary while still keeping them in play to add free agent Kevin Durant next summer

Lakers get to follow their own missed shot with LaMarcus Aldridge

DON RYAN / ASSOCIATED PRESS

Trail Blazers All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge is weighing his options between multiple teams, including the Lakers, who made a second pitch to the free agent.

In the age of second chances, it was still surprising.

The Lakers got a do-over with LaMarcus Aldridge, an attempt to amend their pitch to the free-agent power forward Thursday after their initial Tuesday night presentation flopped.

The effort was improved, but Aldridge apparently wasn't "wooed by it," according to a person familiar with the meeting.

If I am Aldridge, I will go to the Spurs too.

Spurs:
Already playoff team
History of winning
Home state for him
No state income tax?
Not same division as the Warriors

Lakers:
Lottery team with bright future?
Still putting the team together with fewer free agent player available
Long history of winning
How many game can Kobe play still questionable
Big stage big market Hollywood
Kobe still in the team

Why would Aldridge still has not made up his mind? He tries to screw the Lakers so we can't sign any free agent? I hope we still have a shot.

Lakers Rumors: Latest Buzz on LaMarcus Aldridge, Amar'e Stoudemire and More
By Sean ODonnell , Featured Columnist Jul 3, 2015

Following yet another disappointing season, the Los Angeles Lakers entered the offseason looking to right the ship. Things began well, as the team was awarded the second pick in the 2015 NBA draft and came away with promising guard D'Angelo Russell. Unfortunately, free agency hasn't been as kind to the franchise.

The Lakers set their sights on several of the biggest names on the open market. Some of those players have already signed with other teams—Kevin Love re-upping with the Cleveland Cavaliers is one example—but a couple remain available. However, they may not be available to the Lakers at this point.

It’s only a phone call, but Lakers reportedly talk to Rajon Rondo
Kurt Helin Jul 3, 2015, 8:00 AM EDT

So far, the only serious suitor Rajon Rondo has seen in the wake of his disastrous time in Dallas has been the Sacramento Kings. And after talking to Rondo and hearing his requests, the Kings decided to try and overpay both Monta Ellis and Wesley Matthews. (To no avail, Ellis is headed to Indiana and Matthews to Dallas.)

But Rondo’s phone has rung again — the Lakers have touched base, reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

Amare and Smith? Really?

And what would we do with Rondo now that PG might be our best manned position....?

Ed Davis getting 3-year 20? What has the league become to?

Ch*an, I love you for this thread. But please send us better news!

Report: Corey Brewer courted by Knicks, Lakers

Free-agent guard Corey Brewer is receiving plenty of requests for his services next season, according to sources for ESPN.com's Chris Broussard.

Brewer will meet with the Knicks in Los Angeles on Friday as the franchise has about $8 million of free cap space to spend this offseason. He is also being courted by the Lakers, per Broussard.

Brewer averaged 11.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for the Rockets

I am afraid the lakers overplayed a weak hand this year. They should have focused on resigning Ed Davis. Its embarrassing when EVERY FA spurns the lakers for small markets.

If the Lakers really want to push the tempo, Corey Brewer does it better than most at the SF slot.

Lakers News: Hottest Scoops on LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Jim Buss
By Mike Chiari , Featured Columnist Jul 3, 2015

The Los Angeles Lakers are no strangers to stealing headlines, and that is precisely what they have done throughout free agency thus far by taking a run at signing some of the top stars available on the open market.

Its efforts have been fruitless thus far, but Los Angeles is unlikely to lessen its pursuit until the players put pen to paper. While it doesn't look as though the Lakers are favored to land big-name guys such as LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre Jordan, they are doing all they can to bring in a difference-maker who can complement Kobe Bryant, D'Angelo Russell and Co.

LaMarcus Aldridge taking some time to consider pitches from multiple teams

LaMarcus Aldridge currently has no plans to make out-of-town visits and, at this stage, plans to take "a couple of days" to digest all the pitches he's received after meeting with multiple teams, sources told ESPN.com on Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers got a second chance to impress Aldridge, their top free-agent target, on Thursday night in a meeting that lasted about 90 minutes and focused entirely on basketball, sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

After a flurry of meetings with multiple NBA teams, LaMarcus Aldridge is stepping back to weigh everything he's heard from his suitors. Sam Forencich/NBAE/Getty Images
The Lakers had requested the second meeting after being informed that their first presentation to the star power forward had been coolly received because it focused too much on off-the-court business and marketing opportunities in Los Angeles for one of the NBA's glamour franchises and not enough on how the team planned to use Aldridge on the court.

The Lakers Brand Is Not Dead

July 3rd, 2015at11:30 am by Michael Jorgenson

There has been a lot of talk about how badly the NBA’s most storied franchise has embarrassed itself over the past week.

After all the excitement and hype over the Los Angeles Lakers potentially winning this year’s prized free agent target in power forward Lamarcus Aldridge, their initial meeting with the 29-year old All-Star didn’t go particularly well. In fact, the backlash from that meeting was so awful that Aldridge and the Lakers participated in a second “miraculous” meeting yesterday, which has been speculated to be more of a relationship-mending 90 minutes between the Lakers and Aldridge’s management than a true second chance at landing him.

So things aren’t looking too great for the Lakers right now. Ever since David Stern’s infamous (and much maligned) veto of a trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers, pretty much nothing has gone right.

Dwight Howard leaves for the Rockets, Carmelo Anthony stays in New York, and Aldridge pretty much ruins the franchise in the media. Even DeAndre Jordan got a shot in when the organization was already feeling down. All the while, the past two seasons have literally seen the worst play in the franchise’s history.

Much of the blame has landed on management. Since Jim Buss took over as the team’s lead decision maker, the Lakers have been on a downward spiral.

Kobe Bryant Makes Passionate Plea For LaMarcus Aldridge To Join The Lakers
Source Sports source sports4 hours ago

Kobe gets off his high horse for a little bit.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been touted by the media as one of the premiere destinations for big name free agents this offseason. With a depleted roster of talent and a lot of cash to burn, the franchise is in desperate need for a resurgence. So far this week, The Lake Show have failed to pick up any big names, most notable Greg Monroe, who signed on with the Milwaukee Bucks. The team is also in the midst of the LaMarcus Aldridge sweepstakes, who is this offseasons big ticket get. Aldridge met with the Lakers brass earlier and the meeting did not go over so well, with the team attempting to sell him on off the court amenities and opportunities that he would have access to in Los Angeles.

Rumor that the Lakers are/were trying to get Aldridge and Jordan - together.

Jordan, Aldridge, Kobe, Russell and Clarkson as the starting lineup would be enticing.

With the bench consisting of prominent members of the current exciting Summer League team, it would be an exciting bench - especially if they can trade Mrs. Iggy!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but Kobe was not in the 2nd meeting. This information has to do with the first meeting. This report is misleading, making the reader believe that Kobe is right now reaching out to LaMarcus, when in reality, this ship has sailed.
