The Lakers limped to the All-Star break, after Week 16, with a short roster and a three-game losing streak.

Steve Nash, struggling with chronic nerve root issues, tried to give it a go on Tuesday against the Utah Jazz.

Unfortunately, the 40-year-old point guard couldn't go in the second half as the Lakers fell to the Jazz, 96-79.

For the second time this season, the Lakers failed to sell out Staples Center. The franchise was also bumped from another national TV broadcast, the third time that's happened this season

Though Lakers ticket sales have dipped on the secondary market, the team has still been the second-most-popular ticket on the road.

Chris Kaman was promoted to the starting lineup against Utah, but his strong individual performance wasn't enough to help the Lakers get the win.

Earlier in the year, Kaman complained about not getting enough minutes, but suddenly he found himself playing more than he ever anticipated.

An overwhelming majority in an unscientific poll by The Times supported the notion that Nash should retire. The veteran point guard sat out on Thursday when the Lakers hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In one of their better games of the season, the Lakers fell late as the Thunder rallied to win, 107-103.

Before the game, General Manager Mitch Kupchak insisted that the Lakers won't tank, and gave Coach Mike D'Antoni a vote of confidence.

The Lakers hoped to get most, if not all, of their injured players back following the All-Star break, but Xavier Henry had to have his knee drained and will be forced to sit out at least an additional month.

Preview: Lakers Week 17 predictions

By Eric Pincus
February 17, 2014, 8:00 a.m.

The Lakers (18-35) return to play after the All-Star break tied with the Sacramento Kings at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Injuries have crippled the team but the Lakers could get reinforcements as early as Wednesday.

Players in limbo include Steve Nash (back), Jodie Meeks (ankle), Jordan Farmar (hamstring), Pau Gasol (groin), Kobe Bryant (knee) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Both Bryant and Henry are weeks away from a return. Gasol has been subject to trade rumors. The league's trade deadline is Thursday.

Through 53 games, the Lakers have only 18 wins, four behind cumulative expectations.

Wednesday vs. Houston Rockets

The Rockets (36-17) have surged of late, winning seven in a row to climb into third place in the Western Conference -- in a virtual tie with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Clippers.

Houston has struggled to stay healthy all season, but nothing on a par with what the Lakers have had to deal with.

Expect Dwight Howard to be booed on every touch. Also expect the Rockets to outclass the Lakers, although it may be competitive if the Lakers get a few warm bodies back from the injured list.

NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers unlikely to find deal for Pau Gasol

BY JOSH HILL - FEB 17TH, 2014 AT 7:22 AM

For the past few years, it seems that Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol has seen his name come up in trade rumors on an annual basis. It’s almost a tradition at this point to have the Lakers shop him, seemingly find a deal and then not have a single thing happen.

In the last three years Gasol has been supposedly going to be traded to the New Orleans Hornets, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers with the Phoenix Suns being the latest team to be close to acquiring him. But according to Sam Amico from FOX Sports, the Lakers are unlikely to find a deal for Gasol — again.

And most everyone seems to think the Lakers won’t be able to reach a deal involving Pau Gasol.
He goes on to say that no one can predict the deadline, which is true, but Amico seems confident enough to report that Gasol likely won’t be moving. A lot can happen and the Lakers may lower the cost of Gasol, but it appears that we may have been given the annual Gasol trade rumors runaround by Los Angeles.

Another report it’s going to be a slow trading deadline
Kurt Helin Feb 17, 2014, 10:15 AM EST

For the second year in a row, the trading deadline is shaping up to be more bust than boom.

We’ve been passing along reports that as the Thursday (Feb. 20) trade deadline approaches the seas remain calm, and not in a “before the storm” kind of way. The latest is from Ken Berger at CBSSports.com in his diary from All-Star weekend.

Trade talk at All-Star weekend has been “as slow as it’s been in a long time,” said one executive who has not received a single phone call. A lot of teams have made it known which players they are open to moving, but the problem is finding trade partners. Very few teams are willing to part with premium draft picks or take on future salary, which are the two key drivers for trades.

Berger touches on the two key issues dampening trade talks. One is the fact there are far more sellers than buyers right now — most teams that fancy themselves contenders (or close to it) are happy with their roster, or want to make tweaks (adding bench depth, for example). Outside of a possible Pau Gasol trade (and I wouldn’t call that likely as he has not been healthy) there are not likely to be any name players moved.

Also, teams are hording draft picks, and most of the sellers want prospects or draft picks back for their players. Teams know this draft is deep and GMs seem to like the next few (not as much, but they seem good). Plus, under the new CBA, rookie contracts are even more valuable because you get a potentially quality player at a reasonable price.

Kobe Bryant All-Star Media Transcript
February 17, 2014 7:01 am PST

Prior to the 2014 All-Star Game, Kobe Bryant addressed the media to give another general update on where he’s at in his recovery and rehab process, his optimism on his future with the Lakers during the remaining years on his contract, plus his experience as a spectator this year during All-Star Weekend. Below is a transcription of his comments:

Q: On the general update in his recovery/rehab process:
Bryant: It’s coming slowly, it’s coming slowly. I’m optimistic coming out of the break I’ll have some improvements once I get back to L.A., do a couple follow-ups and then go from there. But it’s been a slow process.

Q: On what he can do during this time and if he’s still hopeful to play this season:
Bryant: Just stick to the script, just try to get better and go from there. I just try to focus, keep my blinders on and do what I have to do; and not worry about too much what’s going on around you, but just stay focused on what your responsibilities are.

Q: On if he thinks he’ll be back playing in the All-Star Game during his remaining years in the league:
Bryant: I hope so, I hope so. When you’re playing in an All-Star Game, that means you’re one of the best players in the world. That’s obviously a big goal of mine to be there. But it’s tough coming here, though, because normally when you come here your competitive juices are already flowing. Now it’s kind of looking at it from a different perspective, but you also get a chance to soak it all in a little bit more, kind of sit back andwatch and observe, which has its own fun element to it.

Q: On the level of optimism he has the Lakers will get back to the NBA Finals during the final years on his contract:
Bryant: This season seems to kind of – what we have coming up this offseason with the cap space and what we have ahead of ourselves – be right in the Lakers wheelhouse, in terms of turning things around pretty quickly. When we’ve had summers like this, they’ve never really faltered. They’ve normally made really sound and excellent decisions that put us right back in contention. So I think this offseason is right in their wheelhouse.

NEW ORLEANS — Kobe Bryant acknowledges the best days of his brilliant career might be in the past. He still wants to play in another NBA All-Star game, though.

The 16-time All-Star made that much clear while sitting out Sunday's 2014 edition with nagging pain and swelling in his left knee, stemming from a broken leg. He said he would even be interested in entering a future 3-point contest.

Playing in an All-Star game "means you're one of the best players in the world," Bryant said shortly before Sunday night's game, which he watched from the bench in a tan suit. "It's obviously a goal of mine."

The Los Angeles Lakers star is trying not to delude himself about how much longer he can play at the level to which he's been accustomed. He has played in only six games this season, fracturing his tibia shortly after his return from an Achilles tendon injury.

Asked if he was concerned his body might be starting to give out, he responded, "Of course. Absolutely."

Trade deadline: Pau Gasol, Eric Gordon, others to watch as the day approaches

It has been a busy few months on the NBA’s rumor mill, and on Thursday, it will come to a climax. That’s when the clock strikes on the league’s trade deadline, and the final roster arrangements for the league’s playoff contenders—as well as arrangements for those teams that have given up on postseason hopes—will be set.

Around the league, executives are expecting an active week of deals, but one without marquee names.

Pelicans guard Eric Gordon (AP Photo)
MORE: Images from All-Star Weekend | NBA's role in New Orleans | Lillard's road to stardom

“There is a pretty big line out there between the buyers and the sellers,” one GM said. “There are a lot of role players out there who would do well on contenders, playing for teams that are clearly rebuilding. You are going to see a lot of those second-tier names out there, but it is not like you are going to see any All-Stars changing teams.”

Already, we have seen some trades go down, including two major deals that sent potential free-agent forwards to downtrodden teams—Rudy Gay going from Toronto to Sacramento, and Luol Deng being shipped from Chicago to Cleveland.

There have been minor deals, too. The retooling Celtics made two deals at this point—shipping out guard Courtney Lee and Jordan Crawford—and the Nets, too, made two deals to wind up with backup point guard Marquis Teague.

The trades involving Gay and Deng were big ones, and the fact that those deals have already been made should take some steam out of deadline activity. But there is still much to monitor this week:

Pau to the Suns?

Talks between the Suns and Lakers about Pau Gasol broke down when the Lakers insisted on getting Phoenix’s best pick in the upcoming draft in a deal for Emeka Okafor—essentially a salary dump for the Lakers, with a pick as a bonus. The surprising Suns would like to bolster their frontcourt to make a run in the postseason, and they could potentially have four picks in the upcoming draft.

Phoenix does not want to bring in four rookies next season, though, and would be willing to make a move. Because Gasol has a $19 million contract, it is difficult to match up his salary in such a way that the Lakers would not add future salary. The Suns are in position to make the best (if not only) offer to the Lakers, so look for the sides to come back to the table.

NBA Rumors: Kobe Bryant on future: Maybe this is the end, maybe it’s not

BY BRYAN ROSE - FEB 17TH, 2014 AT 3:35 PM

It seems a bit odd to suggest Kobe Bryant may never play another NBA game, but the Los Angeles Lakers star gave a pretty candid interview before Sunday’s All-Star game (which he didn’t play in due to injury) and questioned how much longer he’ll be able to play.

One glaring quote was Bryant suggesting this could be the end.

“It’s really the biggest challenge. Maybe this is the end, but then again, maybe it’s not. And it’s my responsibility to do all that I can to make sure that it’s not.”
Of course, Kobe’s always had a bit of a flair for the dramatic – be it in a game or with the media.

The fact remains though – Bryant entered the league at 18-years-old and has played multiple ‘extra’ seasons of basketball thanks to his 220 playoff games, essentially making him a 21-year vet if you add in those extra games.

Will Kobe go out and never play another game? That seems improbable, but there is going to come a point when Kobe has to realize his body can take so much.

But as difficult as that’s going to be for Kobe to realize, it might be even tougher for us as fans of the game.

According to the NBA Development League transactions page, former Lakers guard Kareem Rush retired last month.

In a recent phone interview with The Times, Rush said that's not the case.

"I've retired from the D-League," he said. "[I'm] not retired from basketball completely."

Rush, 33, last played in the NBA for the Clippers on Nov. 17, 2009, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He has since worked to get back in the NBA, joining the Lakers' D-League affiliate D-Fenders for the second time in his career.

Before leaving the team in January, Rush averaged 9.8 points in 12 appearances. Although he's done playing for the D-League, Rush says he is still considering his next move as a basketball player.

"The door is still open," he said.

I'am so done with thoses. I don't like that he talks about making an all star game again, or entering the 3pt contest. That's futile goals for a player of his caliber. That's just weak but maybe that's where he is now. He should be talkina bout championships and how he's hungry to come back again but I guess father time is doing his thing.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Nets, Lakers talking deal to send Jordan Hill to Brooklyn
See alsoNBA Los Angeles Lakers Jordan Hill Brooklyn Nets NBA Trade Deadline Lakers Trade Rumors

Ryan Ward
Los Angeles Lakers Examiner

February 17, 2014
The NBA trade deadline is only days away and the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be a team that could be very active. On Mon. Feb. 17, another Lakers trade rumor surfaced about Jordan Hill potentially heading to the Brooklyn Nets in a deal before the deadline according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

The Los Angeles Lakers have had discussions on a deal to send forward Jordan Hill to the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Over the past few months, Pau Gasol has been the one name mentioned in Lakers trade rumors with the team finally ready to part ways with the veteran. Although Gasol may still be traded elsewhere, Hill also appears to be on the block.

Apparently, Hill hasn't felt comfortable in head coach Mike D'Antoni's system. D'Antoni loves players that are able to stretch the floor at every single position and Hill has suffered in his system as a result of being able to stretch the floor like rookie Ryan Kelly.

With Hill set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, the veteran forward may look elsewhere in free agency. That being said, the Lakers looking for a trade partner isn't surprising as they may see him walk this summer for nothing in return.

Lakers trade rumors: Nets eyeing Jordan Hill, per report
By Michael C. Jones

The Los Angeles Lakers have been in recent discussions with the Brooklyn Nets about a potential trade involving forward-center Jordan Hill, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

The Nets could use a $5.25 million disabled player exception in order to acquire the Lakers big man, who has never been able to find a comfortable spot within the framework of head coach Mike D’Antoni’s offense. If they choose to use this provision, they have until March 10 in order to do so.

Despite the exception, the Nets would have delve further into luxury tax territory in order to acquire Hill. Currently, they have a payroll of over $100 million, which puts them $42.8 million over the salary cap. Bringing in Hill would mean an additional $17 million cap hit when considering the luxury tax.

But despite a 24-27 record at the All-Star break, Brooklyn is looking toward the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Though the D’Antoni-led Lakers haven’t been able to maximize Hill’s talent, he’s shown what he can do when given the opportunity in the right system. In 52 games including 19 starts during the 2013-14 season, he’s averaged a career-high 8.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in just 19.5 minutes.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Los Angeles, Brooklyn Nets Trade Discussed

February 17, 2014 06:45 PM EST

Lakers trade rumors have Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Nets discussing a deal. These trade rumors indicate that Jordan Hill could be heading to the Eastern Conference very soon.

This appears like it would be a salary dump by the team in order to move closer to the luxury tax threshold. Though Hill doesn't make that much money this season, every little bit could help avoid some stiff financial penalties.

In exchange for taking on Hill, the Nets would be using their Disabled Player Exception to make the deal happen. They were granted this because of the Brook Lopez injury and it would simply mean taking on more salary for that team.

This deal would be expensive for Brooklyn to make, as it would put them even further into the tax penalty and Hill does makes $3.5 million this season. Will the highest payroll in the league, though, it might be worth it if the front office actually feels he is the difference between an early exit in the postseason and making the NBA Finals.

These LA Lakers trade rumors are interesting because they come from a place of fact. This deal could easily go down if both sides agree to it before the Feb. 20 deadline. It makes sense because Los Angeles is looking to save money and the Brooklyn Nets haven't shown a reason to care with a wealthy owner.

The Pau Gasol Exception

BY VALERIEMORALES - FEB 17TH, 2014 AT 3:33 PM

It has been six years since he planted his flag on the Los Angeles beach. It has been two years since he was traded to Houston and, for basketball reasons, not traded. There are four days remaining before anything is official yet. This much is true: the melodrama that has overwhelmed Pau Gasol’s basketball life is coming to a quiet close only because it is losing its oxygen. Either Pau will be traded before Thursday’s deadline to a team willing to give up a first round draft pick in 2013 or he will play seven more weeks as a Los Angeles Laker and then who knows what happens for the rest of his career. The Lakers prefer a trade and at the same time they are reluctant to make a trade because Pau Gasol breathed life into the organization in 2008 and cemented their championship identity. He anchored three title runs. He made it possible for Kobe to best Shaq, for Phil to best Red Auerbach, for the Lakers to best the Celtics in game 7- Pau had 18 rebounds in that game, 8 offensive, 8 defensive. None of this was on the shoulders of Pau when he came here in a brilliantly shocking but timely transaction but all of it he carried as a burden even as he will never be the face of a franchise. He will never be appreciated but he will never be forgiven either for not being tough and physical, the sort of street fighter Americans love to imagine they are. Yet in his own way Pau is the heart of the Lakers organization. He is their kindness and generosity and also their frustration. He was coached these last two years by someone who does not appreciate his talent and Pau could not hide his antipathy. All of this happened in six years, the brilliant and the impulsive, the excellent and the important. And now the Lakers have to try to convince other teams that this player they do not want any more has some sort of value left in his aged, frequently injured body.

Futures of Bryant, Gasol the only mysteries for Lakers

BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

The Lakers had just suffered another loss, a 17-point gouging to the lowly Utah Jazz two games before the All-Star break. It was perhaps the Lakers worst in a season full of contenders for that title.
But Chris Kaman made a plea to a frustrated fan base.
“Everybody knows we want to win,” the center said. “It’s not like we are out here trying to chase (draft) picks; that’s not what we’re doing at all. I promise.”
And while a nice sentiment, with just 29 games left and the All-Star Game, the ceremonial season’s midpoint, behind them, whether the Lakers are tanking hardly matters.
The Lakers (18-35) are 13 games out of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference and locked in a tie for last place with the Sacramento Kings and, intentional or not, have completely tanked.
Even with several key players expected to return from injury this week, this season has skidded so far off course that it has lost all the compelling components of competition.
Steve Nash has been toasted from the inside, battling nerve issues that will almost certainly end his career. Even the fun, young players who have had opportunities to shine have been beset by injuries.

NBA Trade Rumors: Steve Blake on Warriors radar?

BY JACOB RUDE - FEB 17TH, 2014 AT 5:35 PM

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, many expect the Lakers to be one of the biggest names involved in numerous deals. With a plethora of one-year deals and nearly all of them being role players, teams could look toward the Lakers for a key piece in hopes of a playoff push.

Steve Blake has been a name mentioned as a possible options for many teams looking for a point guard to come off the bench. Blake, an 11-year veteran of the league, could provide valuable experience to a young team. One of the team’s that could be looking his way might be the Golden State Warriors.

After looking Jarrett Jack this summer in free agency, the Warriors have found it hard to replace his production. While Blake isn’t the same player Jack was, he could provide them leadership for a squad that still has many young members. Considering his play style and abilities – knock-down three-point shooter and gritty defensive player – Blake is likely to be courted by more than a few teams.

The biggest question mark surrounding Blake is injury concerns. Blake battled for a handful of games through an elbow injury early in the season before electing for surgery. However, Blake may have rushed back from the injury he’s dealt with pain in the elbow since his return. Nevertheless, no one can doubt Blake’s warrior spirit, which is attractable to teams looking his way.

So are we really trading our best players for exceptions now?'

Are we really that desperate?
