Lakers-76ers Preview

AP - Sports

After enduring their longest losing streak in seven seasons, the extremely short-handed Los Angeles Lakers found a way to get it done their last time out.

After winning with help from an obscure rule that allowed it to keep a fouled-out player on the floor, Los Angeles tries to make it two in a row when it visits Philadelphia on Friday night.

The Lakers (17-32) suffered seven consecutive defeats before pulling out a 119-108 victory at Cleveland on Wednesday. Los Angeles entered with eight available players, lost two more to injury and had two more foul out.

The Lakers were permitted to keep center Robert Sacre, who was called for his sixth foul with 3:32 remaining, in the game because NBA rules require teams to have five players on the floor at all times. As a result, the league rulebook allows for a team to employ such a scenario.

Injuries: Not a single Laker has played in every game this season

By Eric Pincus
February 6, 2014, 12:59 p.m.
Injuries have defined the 2013-14 season for the struggling Lakers (17-32).
On Wednesday, the team simply ran out of players in its odd, 119-108 victory over the Cavaliers.
After losing Nick Young (knee), Jordan Farmar (calf) and Chris Kaman (fouled out), the team was down to just five available players. Then Robert Sacre fouled out.
Having no one to replace him with, the Lakers, under a rarely invoked rule, took a technical foul and kept Sacre on the floor. For every additional foul Sacre might have incurred, the team would have been penalized an additional technical foul -- but Sacre made it through the last 3½ minutes without another transgression.
With Jodie Meeks (ankle) and Jordan Hill (neck) sitting out in Cleveland, the team's final two ironmen missed their first games of the season.
No Laker has played in every game this season.
Wesley Johnson, Meeks, Young and Hill have played in 48 of the Lakers' 49 games.
Young is questionable for Friday, when the Lakers visit the Philadelphia 76ers. He sat out a game recently on suspension after an on-court altercation in Phoenix.
On the other side of the coin, the Portland Trail Blazers (35-14) have been one of the surprise teams this season in the Western Conference.

Lakers Beat Cavs 119-108 Despite Running Out Of Eligible Players (VIDEO)

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers left Robert Sacre on the court after he fouled out in the fourth quarter. Coach Mike D'Antoni felt it was the best move for his depleted team.

It's been that kind of year for the short-handed Lakers.

Los Angeles lost two more players to injuries on Wednesday night and had to go to a little-known NBA rule to hold on for a 119-108 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

"That was, by far, one of the strangest games I've ever seen," D'Antoni said.

Rookie Ryan Kelly scored a career-high 26 points and Steve Blake had his first career triple-double for Los Angeles, which snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Lakers set a franchise record for 3-pointers, going 18 for 37 from long range.

But Los Angeles' first win in two weeks was overshadowed by a bizarre ending.

Is This the Worst Los Angeles Lakers Team Ever?

COMMENTARY | Going into this season, there weren't many people aside from the most delusional of fans that thought this Los Angeles Lakers team had any shot of making the playoffs.

Everything pointed to this being a bad team with question marks in every aspect of the organization. There was the motley crew of aging veterans battling injuries and unproven "reclamation" guys hoping to earn bigger contracts.

There was the coach and his "system" that seems to have more excuses for not working than there are examples of it actually being effective. And then there was the front office that may or may not be where all the team's problems come from.

Magic Willing To Recruit For Lakers

George Karl discusses Magic Johnson's comments about being willing to help the Lakers attract free agents.Tags: Magic Johnson, Lakers, NBA Rumors, George Karl, NBA News

Always the businessman, Magic Johnson is ready to do whatever it takes to sell the Los Angeles Lakers to free agents and help the team return to its banner days.

AP Photo/Jeff RobersonLakers great Magic Johnson said he's willing to do whatever it takes to help his former employers get back to their winning ways.

But Johnson said the ball is in the court of owner Jim Buss, general manager Mitch Kupchak and coach Mike D'Antoni to make that happen.

"I've been in a lot of different things with the Lakers, but it's up to them -- Jim, Mitch, Coach D'Antoni -- to decide who they want," Johnson told reporters, according to the Los Angeles Times, on Wednesday. "Once they make their decision, they say, 'Hey, Earvin, can you put in a call to so-and-so?'"

Johnson, who was introduced as part of the new ownership group for the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday, has some ideas of what the Lakers need to do to get back to their winning ways, including trading Pau Gasol, who will be a free agent after this season.

Lakers get help from obscure rule to defeat Cleveland Cavaliers

Up next for Lakers: Friday at Philadelphia

By Mike Bresnahan
February 6, 2014, 5:15 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA — Swaggy knee?

Nick Young was the Lakers' latest player to get hurt, taking away their second-leading scorer and nickname-bestowing personality.

He will miss at least two weeks because of a non-displaced fracture in the patella of his left knee. Young, who averages 16.9 points, also sustained a bone bruise.

Young was injured when Cleveland guard C.J. Miles grabbed him from behind on a fastbreak layup, forcing him to plant unsteadily in the second quarter of the Lakers' 119-108 victory Wednesday.

Young, who calls himself "Swaggy P," wasn't happy about the foul.

"They were down 30," he said. "He could have let me have a layup."

The Lakers quickly found a replacement for Young — forward Shawne Williams will sign a 10-day contract and rejoin the team for Friday's game against Philadelphia.

Williams averaged 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 32 games with the Lakers this season. He was cut last month before his contract became guaranteed.

Lakers' Nick Young (patella fracture) out at least two weeks
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
February 6, 2014 5:52 pm ET

The injuries for the Los Angeles Lakers just keep coming. After getting Steve Nash, Steve Blake, and Jordan Farmar recently came back from injuries, shooting guard Nick Young suffered a couple of knee injuries Wednesday night in the Lakers' win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The team announced Thursday that Young will be out a minimum of two weeks with a non-displaced fracture of the patella and a bone bruise on his left knee. From the Lakers:

Lakers guard Nick Young, who injured his left knee in last night's game at Cleveland, had an MRI exam today in Philadelphia. Results of the MRI show that Young has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the patella and a bone bruise. He will be out a minimum of two weeks and will be re-evaluated at that time.
Young joins Pau Gasol, Xavier Henry, Jodie Meeks, and Kobe Bryant as the injured Lakers right now. Farmar left Wednesday's game with a cramp but isn't expected to miss any time due to injury. Nash's return is still in a limited capacity and Blake seems to be fully back.

The Lakers are currently 17-32.

PHILADELPHIA – What could be more bizarre than the Lakers squeaking out a 119-108 win Wednesday over the Cleveland Cavaliers with only five players eligible to play?

Well, there’s one thing.

The Lakers can’t seem to ever play a game where a player doesn’t suffer an injury. An MRI taken on Thursday showed that Lakers forward Nick Young has a non-displaced fracture and bone bruise in his left knee, keeping him sidelined for at least the next two weeks. To offset their depleting roster, the Lakers re-signed Shawne Williams to a 10-day contract after averaging 5.4 points on 37.7 percent shooting and 4.5 rebounds for the Lakers in 32 games before being waived. Williams also averaged 19.5 points on 49.1 percent shooting and 5.8 rebounds in four games with the D-Fenders, the Lakers’ Development League affiliate.

Williams will be available to play when the Lakers (17-32) visit the Philadelphia 76ers (15-35) tonight at Wells Fargo Center. Young will travel with the team to Los Angeles on Saturday.

Young had remained one of the few bright spots for the Lakers, averaging 15.2 points in 28.4 minutes.

Short-handed Lakers sign Williams to 10-day deal
Team release
Posted Feb 6, 2014 5:19 PM
The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Shawne Williams to a 10-day contract, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Williams, a 6'9" forward out of Memphis, most recently was a member of the Los Angeles D-Fenders, the Lakers' NBA Development League affiliate. Originally selected by the Indiana Pacers in the first round (17th overall) of the 2006 NBA Draft, Williams rejoins the Lakers after playing in 32 games (11 starts) for the club earlier this season, averaging 5.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 20.2 minutes.
In 247 career NBA games (34 starts) for the Lakers, Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets, Williams has averaged 5.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 16.9 minutes. Additionally, in four games for the D-Fenders this year, Williams averaged 19.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 25.3 minutes.
