Lakers looking for draft help in a potential deal for Pau Gasol

The Lakers took off Monday for a three-game trip and left behind the injured Pau Gasol.

Will he still be there when they return?

The Lakers and Phoenix Suns have engaged in trade talks for Gasol, though there is one main holdup to a deal being consummated. The Lakers want a better first-round pick than what the Suns currently offer.

The Suns (29-18) are surprisingly good this season, making their draft pick correspondingly low (22nd overall). They own at least one other pick in the NBA draft in June, Indiana's first-round selection, currently 30th overall. It was unclear which of the two picks the Suns were willing to trade as part of the Gasol offer.

It gets tricky: Phoenix also holds first-round picks that belong to Washington and Minnesota but both are protected and will revert back to those teams if they stumble. The Wizards' pick is top-12 protected, so the Suns technically own it at this point (17th overall before Monday's games), while the Timberwolves' pick is top-13 protected, meaning Minnesota holds it right now (12th overall before Monday).

A trade could still happen with the Suns between now and the Feb. 20 trade deadline but the Lakers planned to field other offers for Gasol, according to an official familiar with the situation.

The Lakers (16-31) were tied with Utah and Cleveland for the NBA's sixth-worst record before Monday.

Where is the prediction by EP? I don't see it

Five posts above yours. I guess I should have started a new thread. Things are getting a little messy on this thread though the comments are good and welcome. Here's the link to Eric Picus' article.

Lakers exploring trade with Phoenix Suns for Pau Gasol
See alsobasketball Phoenix Suns Los Angeles Lakers Pau Gasol Emeka Okafor

February 3, 2014
The Los Angeles Lakers are no stranger to being part of the NBA trade rumor mill and reports from EPSN on Jan. 3, 2014 are claiming that Pau Gasol is being linked with a deal that would send him to the Phoenix Suns.

With the Lakers currently at a dismal 16-31 before their game with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night, the club are considering a deal that would send Gasol to the Arizona club in return for Emeka Okafor.

The Suns have the open salary cap room to handle a trade for the veteran forward and would see both sides benefit financially.

However, the Lakes camp claim that they will not part with Gasol on the basis of financial concerns alone.

The Lakers attempted a similar type of deal in December and January with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the involvement of ex-Laker center Andrew Bynum, but the deal fell through.

Pau Gasol Deal Perfect for Phoenix Suns
By Michael Dunlap

COMMENTARY | A potential deal that would send Pau Gasol to the Phoenix Suns is in the works.

If the deal can indeed be made, it would be a match made in heaven for the Suns on a number of different levels. They literally could have their cake and eat it, too.

Marc Stein of ESPN.com first reported the potential deal, which is based around the Suns sending Emeka Okafor's expiring contract to the Los Angeles Lakers for Gasol. Although Gasol makes more, the Suns have the room to pick up the extra salary this season.

The Lakers almost certainly will want a draft pick from the Suns, perhaps one of their first-round picks in the 2014 NBA draft. Truth be told, middle-round draft picks are always a crapshoot, so the idea that the Suns could pick up a known commodity is a very enticing thought.
