KEVIN DING:

Quote:
ORLANDO, Fla. — It sunk in for Pau Gasol on Friday night.

Even if he steps it up, and he has indeed looked more like his old championship self lately, the Los Angeles Lakers don’t have enough to do anything.

“When you lose against the worst teams in the league, you have to ask yourself why—and what does that make you?” Gasol said glumly after the loss to the Orlando Magic.

Pau throwing shoes in the lockerroom? Good to see he's mad as hades and isn't going to take it anymore. Hope Gastrong will put on a Spanish National Team performance at MSG.

Metta chimes in:

Quote:
Metta World Peace characterized what the Lakers are going through as a "small bump in the road" ...
“The Lakers franchise, I don’t think they’ve fallen off the map," World Peace told reporters in New York on Saturday, in advance of the Lakers come to the Garden to play the Knicks on Sunday. "Being there for four years I know how they think. This is a small bump in the road. They’ll get back on top pretty soon. Being there four years, nothing rattles them. This is just a small bump for them. I would love for them to get back on top. I always wanted to be part of a Lakers-Knicks final. That’s the biggest final there could be. It might not happen in my lifetime or when I’m playing, but we’ll see."

Metta also reflected on what it meant to be amnestied by the Lakers and how he views the franchise that netted him the only championship of his career:
"The Buss family is family," World Peace said. "I remember getting breakfast almost every Sunday morning with Dr. Buss. God bless Dr. Buss. And Jeanie Buss calling me to say hi. That’s family. They did what they had to do. It still doesn’t make a difference. They treated me like family when I was there. That’s how I always feel about the Buss family."

Here's my column looking back on World Peace's time in L.A. from this summer:

No joy in Laker Land these days
If the Lakers are going to turn things around, it will have to be with defense

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Mitch Kupchak is about as buttoned up as they come. If there was ever some kind of meter fashioned to read the Los Angeles Lakers general manager's homeostasis level, it would surely show Kupchak in a constant state of anywhere from 4 to 6. Never too high. Never too low.

With that in mind, it was almost jarring to hear (by Kupchak's standards) unbridled optimism from the GM a couple weeks ago when the team was mired in a stretch of eight losses in nine games.

Mike Trudell ‏@LakersReporter

Kobe asked about free agency & Melo, quipped: "Everybody wants to play in L.A. ... it's cold as (expletive) out here (in NYC)."

Kobe on if he gets a clean MRI when he sees Dr. this week: "I'll finally do more things then ride a bike. That's killing me. Killing me."

The plan remains for Kobe to see the Dr. to see if the fracture has healed when the team gets back to L.A., and take it from there.

Bryant called buddy Carmelo (62 points vs CHA) on Friday night to congratulate him on break Bryant's previous MSG record of 61 points.

What did he do this time?

The ESPN commercial break music starting playing randomly for no reason during the game with around 4 minutes left and after they turned it off he was like "no, please keep playing it and get to the next game."

They're both tall and can play PG, good comparison.
