Lakers lose to lowly Utah Jazz on dunk, 105-103
They give up a dunk with 2.1 seconds left and fall to the Jazz for their fourth loss in row. Chris Kaman finishes with 19 points, but suffers a moderately sprained ankle.

SALT LAKE CITY — This was supposed to be the easy part of the Lakers' schedule.

Simple, really. Get closer to .500 with a slew of games against teams already deeply embedded in draft lottery odds.

But the Lakers might be one of those lottery teams too. They lost to the Utah Jazz, 105-103, and fell four games under .500 for the first time this season.

BOX SCORE: Jazz 105, Lakers 103

The Lakers couldn't stop anybody, as usual, letting the NBA's 27th-ranked offense blow past its average of 92.7 points before Friday.

The way the Lakers lost was a new one, a put-back dunk by Derrick Favors with 2.1 seconds left. Jordan Hill left Favors to challenge Gordon Hayward's running layup attempt, leaving the paint open for the rebound.

The final score became official after Jodie Meeks was well short on a 30-foot three-point shot at the buzzer.

Favors' dunk was only the fine point on the large-scale issues for the Lakers (13-17), who let Utah score a season-high 25 fastbreak points and lost Nick Young to foul trouble, of all things.

"It's just the respect factor," said Young, who had 21 points. "I feel we don't get the proper respect as everybody else gets when it comes to turning things out there on the court. It plays a major role. I'm not going to say it was the refs' fault or nothing. Just watch the game over and see what happened out there."

Derrick Favors' dunk lifts Jazz past depleted Lakers

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Utah Jazz beat Los Angeles Lakers 105-103 Friday night in Salt Lake City
Derrick Favors had 18 points, 14 rebounds and final go-ahead dunk with 2.1 seconds left for Jazz
Nick Young had 21 points in 27 minutes but fouled out in fourth quarter for injury-plagued Lakers

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Derrick Favors made quite an impression with the first game-winning shot of his career — at any level.

Through all his years of playing basketball, even in grade school, Favors had never been the last-second hero.

"My first game-winner ever," Favors proclaimed after he finished with a flourish to beat the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. His putback dunk with 2.1 seconds remaining lifted the Utah Jazz to a 105-103 victory against the depleted Lakers.

BOX SCORE: Jazz 105, Lakers 103

WATCH: Favors' huge putback slam

With the game tied at 103, Gordon Hayward drove to the basket on Utah's final possession but missed his off-balance attempt as the Lakers converged. Favors grabbed the rebound and slammed the ball home to snap Utah's four-game home losing streak.

"The two big guys for the Lakers went over and altered his shot a little bit. It went off the rim and I was just there for the offensive rebound," said Favors, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The big man's follow jam was a relief to the Hayward and the Jazz.

"He came in and cleaned up. I saw him with the finish and that's all I needed to see," said Hayward, who had with 24 points and nine assists.

Why even win at this point? Making the playoffs means squat if you have no chance at the title.

Lets get a top pick in the draft better.

Lakers hit a low point in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -- If you wanted a vision of what a team dealing with perpetual injuries this season -- and now with losses starting to pile up -- looks like, you had to glance no further than Chris Kaman huddled in front of his locker following the Lakers' 105-103 road defeat at the hands of the Utah Jazz on Friday.

There sat a shirtless Kaman, still in his game shorts, left leg submerged in a bucket of ice water to help ease the swelling of the moderate sprain of his ankle that he suffered in the game's final minutes, picking apart a turkey sandwich -- stuffing pieces into his mouth along with spoonfuls of cottage cheese -- as he stared down at the floor for several minutes as reporters peppered him with questions about what's going wrong with this team.

Nick Young fouled out in the Lakers' loss at Utah but tried to remain positive: "We're fighting to the end and somehow we got to get over that hump."
It was Kaman's best game as a Laker -- a season-high 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks -- but it ended with him on the bench with a bum wheel, watching as Derrick Favors tipped in the go-ahead bucket with 2.1 seconds left with nobody thinking to box him out.

"We just didn't play good," Kaman said after his team lost its fourth straight game and for the ninth time in its past 13 to drop its record to 13-17. "We did some decent things, but in the second half we couldn't get stops."

Nick Young vents on 'respect'
Updated: December 28, 2013, 2:46 AM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

SALT LAKE CITY -- After fouling out for just the third time in his seven-year career and having to watch from the bench as the Los Angeles Lakers lost 105-103 to the Utah Jazz on Friday, Nick Young let his frustrations be heard.

"It's just the respect factor," Young said after his night ended with him picking up his sixth foul with 5:45 remaining in the fourth quarter after he had scored a team-high 21 points on 10-for-17 shooting. "I feel like we don't get the proper respect that everybody else gets when it comes to certain things out there on the court. It plays a major role. I'm not going to call no names; I'm not going to say it was the refs' fault or nothing, but just watch the game over and see what happened out there."

What happened was L.A. played another game without four of its best -- and most well-known -- players in Kobe Bryant (left knee fracture), Pau Gasol (upper respiratory infection), Steve Nash (nerve root irritation) and Steve Blake (right elbow injury), and lost its fourth straight game and for the ninth time in its past 13 games overall.

Agent Zero

BY VALERIEMORALES - DEC 27TH, 2013 AT 11:00 PM

This is not the case of someone turning their back on their talent. Or their talent going on hiatus and, now, with a change of scenery, it is finally returning. Excellence is not about to be unleashed from some faraway place. Wes Johnson is the same player he always has been, sad as that may seem. But of course it is this way. Wes does not do the things you think he would do, he does not use his body to free his mind, nor does he have the gift of magic, he does not make the game his when someone else is trying to make it theirs. If you watch Wes Johnson play then it is routine to expect that what is in his face will resist change. His face is like all faces, not made by man, but his face is also this- less like clay and more like stone which only means it is the same all of the time. Wes Johnson, is by definition, everything that is cliché about an athletic lottery pick who has never fulfilled expectations and thus is struggling to keep his head above water. What is so complicated about all of it and by default, complicated about Wes, is that we love promises. We love promises in packages that seem raw and gifted, we love the lure of young men who can do athletic things because we think it is an indicator of the future when it is an indicator of nothing in particular.

NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers, Spurs, Raptors and Nets among teams pursing Luol Deng

BY JOSH HILL - DEC 27TH, 2013 AT 6:16 PM

Every since we started hitting the thick of holiday NBA trade rumors, a name that was brought up but won’t go away is Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng. To catch up on the whole Deng trade rumor process, basically the Bulls dangled Deng on the trade block for a half a second before pulling him back, saying they won’t pursue a trade.

But what putting him out there did, was chum the waters for a trade partner to come to the Bulls rather than the other way around. According to Aggery Sam of CSNChicago, several teams are interested in trading for Deng and the pursuit to land him has apparently begun. Sam names the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors as teams league sources have informed him are interested in Deng.

Utah Jazz: Utah's young guns lift Jazz to tense victory over Lakers

By Randy Hollis, Deseret News
Published: Friday, Dec. 27 2013 11:00 p.m. MST

SALT LAKE CITY — The kids are all right.

Or, at least, it looks like they're gonna be.

Utah's lineup of youthful 20-somethings — Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Trey Burke and Alec Burks, along with "old guy" Marvin Williams, who's all of 27 years old — led the way as the Jazz pulled out a tense 105-103 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night in front of an appreciative sellout crowd at EnergySolutions Arena.

The 23-year-old Hayward had 24 points, handed out nine assists and had five rebounds and three steals; 22-year-old Favors contributed a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds; rookie point guard Burke, who just turned 21, chipped in with 14 points and seven assists; and Burks, who's also 22, had 13 points, five boards and four assists off the bench.

Could have had Trey Burke if the Lakers were willing to trade Gasol last summer. Oh well. I hope we get a draft pick in return if we end up with Deng.

Slow Lakers News day so far. The Deng trade rumors are probably overblown and here's an update from Chicago that's a good read. Thanks enveryone, enjoyed you posts

The Luol Deng situation isn't so straight forward

By DougThonus, today at 9:08 am

The rumors around Luol Deng will continue to swirl until the trade deadline. One report says the Bulls aren't shopping, and that both he and the Bulls want to extend their contract into the future. The next has his name floating in trade rumors. It's really pretty simple.
Teams like Luol Deng, but not for a year

Aggrey Sam noted this in his most recent article.

No, certainly not by law enforcement and not even so much on the NBA’s trade market, as many teams are hesitant to take him on as a half-season rental, especially if the Bulls’ price is a productive young player and a first-round draft pick, as people in the know around the league continue to say. But more significantly, Deng’s prospective suitors are more eager about his impending unrestricted free agency, when they could have a chance to woo him away from the only franchise the two-time All-Star has ever played for in his professional career, signing him free and clear.

Many of the interested teams have cap room next year and little interest in giving up an asset to get him when they can bid next summer without losing anything. The teams that don't have cap room aren't necessarily excited on giving up a bunch of assets for Deng only to then have to pay him an unknown amount of money next season.

Maybe you like Luol Deng enough to pay him 12 million a year, but do you like him enough to give up a first rounder, a decent player, and then maybe have to go 14 million a year if the bidding gets crazy?

The Bulls want something good for Luol

At the same time, the Bulls also want something good for Luol Deng. They have two firsts (assuming Charlotte stays on track) and Mirotic on the docket next summer. That's an influx of three rookies already. They likely aren't anxious to bring in a fourth.

Former Lakers center Andrew Bynum could be on move after suspension

Andrew Bynum became known as much for his hairstyles as his inability to play during a lost season with the Philadelphia 76ers. (Matt Rourke / Associated Press / March 1, 2013)
By Eric Pincus
December 28, 2013, 1:23 p.m.

Former Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been suspended by the Cleveland Cavaliers for "conduct detrimental to the team" and it's likely the Cavs will attempt to trade him or simply cut him in a money-saving move.

The Cavaliers announced Saturday morning that Bynum "has been excused from all team activities indefinitely."

Bynum contributed to two Lakers championships but struggled with chronic knee injuries.

Instead of re-signing the 7-footer to a long-term deal, the Lakers dealt Bynum to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012 before his contract expired. In the trade the Lakers received Dwight Howard, who has since moved on to the Houston Rockets after an injury-plagued 2012-13 season.

Bynum didn't play a single game for the Sixers while rehabbing his knees last season.

The Cavaliers signed him to a unique contract this last summer, giving him $12.25 million for the current season, of which only $6 million is guaranteed. Bynum also has a second, non-guaranteed year on his deal at $12.54 million.

Cleveland can cut Bynum so that he clears waivers by Jan. 10, owing him only the $6 million. The team can also try to trade him.

Cavaliers suspend Andrew Bynum

Updated: December 28, 2013, 2:27 PM ET
By Brian Windhorst | ESPN.com

Bynum Suspended, Being Shopped

The Cleveland Cavaliers suspended center Andrew Bynum indefinitely Saturday for conduct detrimental to the team.

In addition, the Cavs will begin aggressively looking to trade Bynum, sources told ESPN.com.

Andrew Bynum was an All-Star in Los Angeles, where he helped the Lakers win two NBA championships. But the 7-foot center missed all of last season with knee injuries and has struggled this season in Cleveland.

Cleveland has until Jan. 7 to decide if it will guarantee his contract for the rest of the season. Bynum signed a two-year, $24 million deal with the Cavs last summer, but the team-friendly contract included only $6 million in guaranteed money.

The decision to suspend Bynum was made Friday, sources said. Bynum did not travel with the team to Boston for Saturday's game against the Celtics.

"It's a terrible situation internally with our team," All-Star guard Kyrie Irving said before the Cavs faced the Celtics. "It's something we have to get over."

It is unclear what led to Bynum's suspension. Cavs coach Mike Brown did not disclose any details regarding the suspension but expressed concern for his players.

"I'm worried about the guys in the locker room," Brown said prior to Saturday afternoon's game. "It's simple as that. In our business, there are a lot of ups and a lot of downs throughout the season.

Sources: Cavaliers to part ways with Andrew Bynum

The Cleveland Cavaliers are determined to unload Andrew Bynum in a trade after their partnership with the former All-Star center has rapidly deteriorated, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Cavaliers have no intention of Bynum ever playing another game for them, a source with direct knowledge of the franchise's plans told Yahoo Sports after the team announced Saturday it has suspended Bynum indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

The Cavs believe they will benefit from no longer having to force him into the lineup when it clearly wasn't working.

"He doesn't want to play basketball anymore," a league source told Yahoo Sports.

The Cavaliers believe Bynum has been a "disruptive" presence within the team and have lost hope the partnership can be salvaged, sources said. Bynum often expressed a lack of desire to play and practice and was convinced by the Cavaliers not to quit previously, sources said.

Other teams that met with Bynum during his free agency last offseason were concerned about his desire to play and commitment to continue the rehab needed for him to play in the NBA after repeated knee problems, sources said.

Bynum, 26, signed a two-year deal worth $24.8 million with the Cavs prior to the season. Only $6 million of the $12.2 million Bynum is due this season is guaranteed if he is waived before Jan. 7. He could be attractive to teams looking to shed some salary because they could acquire him for a player with a similar contract and save $6 million by waiving Bynum.

Why is this surprising? I mean who thought Bynum and Mike Brown could co-exist in the same locker room? Bynum had no respect for Brown when he was a Laker coach, why would it be different now.

This is one of the reasons that the D12 trade was good for the Lakers - it was all about getting rid of the cancer that is Andrew Bynum. The Lakers would have been stuck with him.

However, keep in mind that that worm Mike Brown is the coach, so it may not be all Drew's problem.

What's the next step for Bynum?
Updated: December 28, 2013, 5:59 PM ET
By Brian Windhorst | ESPN.com

The Andrew Bynum suspension and potential trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers has numerous facets especially because Bynum is in a unique position in the league.

There is a lot to consider and digest, but Bynum is a 7-footer, has proved he still can play at some level and has a contract situation that is rare and valuable under certain circumstances. Here's what is in play:

The trade
• Bynum signed a two-year contract for $24.8 million with the Cavs, but only $6 million of it is guaranteed before Jan. 7. After that date, the full $12.25 million this season is guaranteed. Next season's $12.5 million is not guaranteed until July 10.

In short, there is no other contract like this in the NBA at the moment. Not only has Bynum proved in spurts this season that he can be effective, but the Cavs also signed him to a contract that gives them or any team that trades for him lots of flexibility. He can be an instant money saver if the Cavs or a team that trades for him waives him before Jan. 7. He can be a rental for the rest of the season. Or he can be a trade chip heading into the draft and next summer because he can act as a salary purge option.
