Quote: | Lakers' patience wearing thin
BY JANIS CARR / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
Dwight Howard sat sullenly in front of his locker Tuesday night and tried to explain what is wrong with the Lakers. Like how can they one night can beat a team by 17 points and the next fall to the Philadelphia 76ers, 103-99?
"The games we've won, blowing teams out, we've played a certain way," Howard said. "The games we've lost, we've played a different way, so we need to find a balance."
But finding that equilibrium has been difficult for the Lakers this season.
They're up, they're down. They're winning, they're losing. Mostly, however, they seem to be stuck in neutral and the frustration is mounting.
"It is frustrating," point guard Steve Nash said. "Obviously we haven't been able to find that understanding. We've had it in moments, but overall we're still looking for our chemistry."
Both Howard and Nash said the team — and Lakers fans — needs to be patient.
"We got to have patience, got to stick with it," Howard said. "(We have to be patient) knowing that this won't last forever, knowing that what we're going through as a team won't last forever."
But how long will the Lakers' patience last? At 15-16, they dipped below .500 again with the loss to the 76ers, and don't get any breaks in their schedule. They play the Clippers on Friday and Denver on Sunday before games at Houston and San Antonio next week. |

Quote: | LAKERS NOTEBOOK: Dwight Howard hasn't looked so super so far

Dwight Howard doesn't look like Superman.
Superman knew how to fly. Howard can barely jump. Superman moved at lightning speed. Howard lacks explosiveness. Superman never had health issues. Howard's nursing a surgically repaired back that appears to be ailing him.
After scoring only seven points on 1-of-7 shooting in the Lakers' 103-99 loss Tuesday to the Philadelphia 76ers, Howard gave one-word answers and repeatedly shook his head over questions whether his back has affected his game.
"It's been frustrating for him because of the nature of the injury and trying to come back and meet the expectations we all have for him," Kobe Bryant said. "It's tough to deal with that when you're not physically the same player that you were.
"It's been frustrating for him. But to his credit he's battling through it and figuring out ways to be effective."
Hustle points
At a time when the Lakers wonder about their identity, reserve forward Jordan Hill provides a perfect blueprint on how to navigate all the various obstacles.
"I just go out there and hustle every time I'm out there on the floor," said Hill, who's averaged 6.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 15.7 minutes off the bench. "I just go out and bring it every time. No matter how many minutes I get, I just try to bring it." |

Quote: | Amar’e Stoudemire rips Mike D’Antoni in praising Mike Woodson as the first defensive coach he’s played for
Meanwhile, Woodson chides his players for not playing hard enough on defense. 'If you're going to put on the uniform and you're going to play, you've gotta still be committed.'
By Mitch Lawrence / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Mike Woodson is limited to 17 minutes in his return to the Knicks Tuesday night.
Too bad the Knicks and Lakers are done playing for this season . . . unless they meet in the Finals.
Amar’e Stoudemire added some fuel to the New York-L.A. rivalry when he heaped praise on Mike Woodson on Wednesday while also indirectly criticizing Mike D’Antoni for his failure to teach defense in New York.
Stoudemire had made allusions in the past to D’Antoni’s failure to make the Knicks a good defensive team. But a day after making his season debut in the Knicks’ loss to the Blazers, he unleashed his most damning comments toward the ex-Knicks coach who now is with the Lakers, when asked why he thought he could become a factor at that end of the floor. |

Quote: | Lakers Practice Report: Clippers Just the Beginning
The Los Angeles Lakers had a full-contact scrimmage in front of the media during Thursday's practice with a tough game against the Clippers next on the calendar.
By Shahan Ahmed
| Thursday, Jan 3, 2013 | Updated 2:51 PM PST
After a day off on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Lakers convened in El Segundo, Ca for a hard practice that included a full contact five-on-five scrimmage ahead of the upcoming Lakers and Clippers rivalry game on Friday night at Staples Center.
The dark team was the Lakers’ finishing five of Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol, and Dwight Howard. The light team consisted of Darius Morris and Jodie Meeks in the back court with Devin Ebanks at small forward. The power forward and center positions were rotated between Robert Sacre, Jordan Hill, Earl Clark, and Antawn Jamison. |

As the Lakers prepare for Friday’s game with the Clippers, we take a look at some telling numbers.
106.4
The Lakers rank sixth in offensive efficiency (106.4 points per 100 possessions), and have the eighth-highest net differential (+3.6), despite having the NBA’s 18th-best record.
According to NBA.com, L.A. has played 18 lineups 15 or more minutes, and of those, only six lineups have failed to produce an offensive rating of 103.6, which would rank 10th in the league. So regardless of the lineup they deploy, the Lakers basically have a top-10 offense.
Not all is perfect on that end of the floor -- the Lakers are 26th in turnovers per game, 29th in free-throw percentage, and 21st in assist ratio -- but they rarely have difficulty scoring.
102.7
The Lakers rank 17th in defensive efficiency (102.7), less than a point better than the Detroit Pistons (103.6).
The Lakers are 20th in opponent points in the paint, 26th in opponent turnovers, and 24th in opponent offensive rebounding.
The Lakers rank last in transition defense and 28th in opponent points off turnovers. Contributing factors could be their age (per the Elias Sports Bureau, the Lakers are the third-oldest team when weighting minutes played) coupled with Mike D’Antoni’s high-paced system -- L.A. is third in pace factor. |

Quote: | Clippers vs. Lakers: preview of Friday night's game
The Clippers have lost two in a row since winning an NBA season-best 17 in a row. The Lakers, who had won five in a row, have lost two of three.
January 4, 2013
Clippers-Lakers
When: 7:30.
Where: Staples Center.
On the air: TV: Prime Ticket, TWC SportsNet, TWC Deportes, ESPN; Radio: 980, 1330, 710.
Records: Clippers 25-8, Lakers 15-16.
Series record: 1-0, Clippers.
Update: Both teams looked to have hit their strides during recent winning streaks. The Clippers had an NBA-best 17-game winning streak and the Lakers had a five-game winning streak. But the Clippers have lost two straight and the Lakers have dropped two of three. The Clippers have won 10 consecutive home games, and the Lakers are 5-9 on the road. The Lakers are fifth in the NBA in scoring (102.8 points per game) but are 25th in points allowed (102.6). The Clippers are ninth in scoring (101.4) and give up the fourth-fewest points (92.9).
