Quote: | Lakers rise with Steve Nash, but Heat and Thunder still reign
No matter how much the NBA has shifted during this month's free-agency and trading period, the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder remain the best two teams in the league.
But it has been fun to watch all the moving parts around the league, all with the intent of taking down the NBA champion Heat.
Here's one NBA reporter's take on how the league will shake out next season. |

Quote: | Kobe Bryant: Lakers' title chances 'much, much better' with Nash
LAS VEGAS -- Kobe Bryant understands the benefit of Steve Nash joining the Lakers. How could he not?
The recent acquisition of the two-time MVP from the Phoenix Suns will undeniably open up the Lakers' offense and Bryant believes it will improve their championship hopes.
"He gives us a much, much better chance," Bryant said Friday after Team USA's first practice in a week-long training camp before the Olympics. "He gives us a great chance." |

Heat maybe, but I am sorry, if the Lakers had Nash this last year, Lakers would have won in 5. Thunder are a perimeter heavy to the bone team, and when their shots aren't dropping, you saw what happen in the latter minutes in the Finals. |

Quote: | Birthday gift ideas for Pau Gasol
If he hasn't done so already, Pau Gasol likely will blow out the candles of his cake and make a wish commemorating his 33rd birthday. But what will be his wish? Here are a few ideas.
1. Remain a Laker. This isn't a state secret. Ever since the Lakers tried trading Gasol in a failed deal to acquire Chris Paul, the Lakers power forward has painfully reitered his desire to stay with the purple & gold. Yet, the Lakers haven't offered much in the way of assurances |

The Heat will upgrade at two key positions, one they have with Allen and I believe Camby will be there soon as well. A Camby, Bosh, Lebron, Allen, Wade lineup in stretches of games is lethal. The only set up I can see that could slow that down is Howard, Gasol, Artest, Bryant and Nash. That finals lineup would be 80'sque.... |

Quote: | Steve Blake eager to backup Steve Nash at point guard
The banner appears at the top of Steve Blake's newly launched website with a message epitomizing how he's viewing the 2012-13 season.
It touts the championships he won both in high school (Oak Hill Academy in Virginia in 1999) and in college (University of Maryland in 2002). The banner describes Blake as a "proven winner on every level." But then on the far end featuring his NBA career, the following phrase highlights Blake's awareness that unfinished business remains.
"One more championship to go." |

Quote: | Without Dwight Howard, Lakers still not favorite
Dan Patrick asked me at the end of our nine-minute chat on his show Thursday morning who the favorite in the Western Conference is now that the Lakers have secured Steve Nash to play the point.
It’s still Oklahoma City, as exciting as the Nash acquisition is for the Lakers. I said that Dwight Howard is still out there as the true game-changer for the Lakers, who still could be so much better with Howard’s absolute dominance on defense. Nash will certainly perk up the Lakers’ offense with his passing and pick-and-roll prowess and make Andrew Bynum look even better, but Howard is a far more important piece than Nash — as I asserted in my column back on Tuesday (which feels like forever ago in NBA terms) about the Lakers having reached the sweet-spot moment to trade Bynum for Howard. |

Quote: | Ding: Nash will bond with Kobe on Lakers
Steve Nash brings excitement and color, the Lakers newly capable of streaming or soaring in any number of directions, just like the fireworks from the day of his decision.
At his brightest core, though, Nash is best known for two things: commitment forever to team basketball and being universally loved as simply the nicest of guys. |

Quote: | Magic Johnson: Nets Have No Kobe, So Howard Should Come to LA
Magic Johnson got on Twitter yesterday to say that Dwight Howard should add the Lakers to his (very short) list of preferred team(s), now that Steve Nash has signed on. He went further in an interview with the L.A. Times, dissing, as he often does, the Nets prospects. It's good to be noticed.
"I think Dwight Howard is making a big mistake by not considering the Lakers," Johnson said. "Dwight Howard cannot finish a game. What happens is big men put you in a position to win, but they don't win it. Kobe Bryant always closed out games when he was with Shaq. There's no Kobe Bryant on the [Brooklyn] Nets team." |

I think we actually match up very well against the Heat. They beat OKC with Lebron often taking anyone on the Thunder down on the block and abusing them. He'd either bull his way to the basket or kick out to shooters for open 3s. He has to play differently against the Lakers because of our size. He's not dominating our bigs the way he did OKC's. He can dominate most our perimeter guys, but that takes his game to perimeter shots and fastbreak opportunities.
He'll still be extremely effective but he won't be AS effective, in my humble opinion. Not in a playoff series where we can hone in on him.
Playoffs are all about matchups and the Lakers own some pretty good ones against the Heat:
PG: Lakers - Nash
SG: Lakers - Bryant
SF: Heat - Lebron
PF: Lakers - Gasol (who will be even better with Nash).
C: Lakers - Bynum
We must shore up the bench so that we don't lose whatever advantage we gain with the starters, the second the reserves hit the court ... that happened far too often last year.
I like our chances against anyone, assuming we're blessed with good health and at least a few quality bench players. |

Miami can stretch the floor. Bron has a huge advantage. If they put him at 4, he can take Gasol off the dribble. Gasol ain't stopping Bron from drives. Now James drives and who helps? Drew? Someone else. What happens? Kick outs to Allen, Battier, Chalmers, Bosh etc. all capable to hit jumpshots.
The reason James posted up was they put midgets on him. He's not going to try and post up Ron or Pau. He'll just abuse them 1 on 1 with drives.
If LA wants to beat Miami, the way to do it IMO
#1 Work the ball inside to Bynum/Gasol vs Bosh/Haslem. Miami will definitely double. Kick outs and hit your jumpshots (huge challenge for the team, that's why we need a SF that can hit 3's, although Nash is a huge upgrade here)
#2 Push the ball and get as many easy scores as possible
#3 Kill them on the glass |

Quote: | Nash eyes film career after run with Lakers
Steve Nash might just have had an ulterior motive in signing to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The NBA star, who's inking a three year, $27-million deal to move from the Phoenix Suns to the Lakers, has said that he'll be moving into film production after his run with the team, a career change that will no doubt be aided by his relocation to the show-business capital of the world.
Talking to Forbes in May, the 38-year old Nash said that he'll likely abandon his sports career in three years - when his contract with the Lakers expires - to pursue his other sideline gigs. Prime among those, Nash says, will be his production company Meathawk. |

Quote: | Lakers' new point guard is an efficiency expert
LOS ANGELES -- Steve Nash can be tough on coaches.
Scheming to stop his relentless pick-and-roll game often leaves even the best tacticians futilely scribbling on whiteboards.
"The agony he caused before games, during games and after games trying out how to figure out how you were going to do it better ... " former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said, his voice trailing off, "He's taken years off coaches' lives." |

Quote: | Steve Nash doesn't fill defensive hole
That is the best and only word that can be used to describe Steve Nash going to the Lakers. It's like putting Scarlett Johansson in "The Avengers" franchise. The movie didn't need her, it would have still been great with someone else playing Black Widow. But damn.
Sexy. Just for the hell of it.
The problem with sexiness is that it sometimes doesn't equate to more than what's on the surface. Sexy sometimes can be substance-less. It can look like a trophy but not materialize into acquiring, generating or winning one.
Nash, the greatest point guard of his generation, will look sexy in a Lakers uniform. His acquisition is exactly what the organization needed to bring back some of the sexiness that it lost when Chris Paul wasn't allowed to go there last year yet was allowed to go to the Clippers. |

Report: Andrew Bynum might not sign extension with Orlando Magic if traded
It looks like both of the prizes in a potential Los Angeles Lakers-Orlando Magic trade wouldn’t be sold on remaining with their new teams for the long-term.
Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Twitter Sunday night that Lakers center Andrew Bynum “has shown no inclination” toward extending his contract with the Magic if the Lakers worked out a trade for Magic center Dwight Howard that involved Bynum. As SI’s Sam Amick wrote last week, the Lakers might have diminished their chances in the Howard sweepstakes

What sources? Isn't Drew still out of the country getting an oil change on his knees and making it rain in some German bierhaus?
If it's David Lee talking, I would start worrying now. I could see him putting the screws to the Lakers as well as Orlando. He already did it with Ariza. |
