Lakers trying to acquire first-round pick, eyeing Baylor duo

The Los Angeles Lakers traded their first-round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers in March in a package for point guard Ramon Sessions. Sessions recently opted out of his contract, although he said he would consider re-signing with L.A.

The Lakers, though, may still be able to salvage something on draft night, however. Sam Amico of FoxSportsOhio.com tweets that an Eastern Conference executive tells him that the Lakers are trying to trade back into the first round, with an eye on the Baylor frontcourt duo of Perry Jones III and Quincy Miller.

Former Laker Dennis Hamilton dies at 68

Former NBA and ABA player Dennis Hamilton died Monday night in Chandler, Ariz. He was 68.

Hamilton played for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1967-68 and with the Atlanta Hawks in 1968-69. He played a season for the ABA's Pittsburgh Pipers and another for the Kentucky Colonels in 1970-71.

Though Hamilton wasn’t with the Lakers long, he proved himself to be quite dependable during his one season in Los Angeles.

In his 44 games with the team, the 6-foot-8 forward made all 13 of the free throws he tried (he appeared in two playoff games but did not shoot any free throws).

Pat Riley says he cherishes 2006 Miami championship most of all

Miami Heat President Pat Riley could be days away from receiving his eighth NBA championship ring.

Of the seven he already possesses, six of those were won with the Lakers -- one as a player, one as an assistant coach and four as the head coach during the Showtime era.

The one he won as coach of the Miami Heat in 2006.

While acknowledging that "the Laker years made me," Riley confessed that his "favorite team was the one in 2006 here. Bringing Shaq into it and winning the championship for this city and for Miami, for [Heat owner Micky Arison], that to me will always probably be the one that I cherish the most."

What? No love for L.A.? What about finally beating the Celtics in 1985? Or beating the Pistons in seven games to make good on his guarantee of a repeat championship in 1988?

Bryant, LA teams dominate first-ever NBA Social Media Awards

Kobe Bryant took home two awards, while his Los Angeles Lakers were named Social MVT (Most Valuable Team) in the inaugural NBA Social Media Awards, which were held Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time).

The ceremony was set up to "celebrate the biggest moments and most trend setting plays from the 2011-2012 season....that brought NBA fans across the globe closer together."

Bryant took home the Trendsetter Award for being the most mentioned player this NBA season on Twitter, and the Thumbs Up Award for having 12 million-plus likes on Facebook, the most by any NBA player.

Even former Laker Shaquille O'Neal, who also happened to be one of the show's co-hosts, along with another former Laker Rick Fox, was honored with the Triple Threat Award, for best former player, turned analyst to follow via social media.

That report about us like the Baylor Duo is great. I think Quincy Miller can be a great player with his size, he's like a Durant type player. High potential especially learning from Kobe. I hope we can snag him....

I'm actually very surprised the lakers want into the first round. I also don't think they do it unless they dump Pau cause those rookie contracts are guaranteed for like 3 years I think.

This doesn't surprise me as much simply because I think Jimmy likes playing the Lotto!

I think this is very possible considering we have the TPE and a team like Houston could benefit from it. Portland also has 2 picks and could benefit from the TPE especially if they want to stay competitive, they would need to add solid vets to their roster.

I'm not sure what adding to or even one pick does for our team right now though???

So will the entire TPE be used for one draft pick?

I think we could definitely get 2 picks for the TPE. I also wouldn't count out Gasol being moved during the draft.

The most a draft pick can go for is like 2-4 million. The TPE is like 8 mill so if the FO plays it smart we can definitely add some much needed youth to this team. Some fresh legs!

You can't get any picks for the TPE. Draft picks have no assigned salary value until they are signed. So if you trade something for picks, you aren't using the TPE, and a team taking on salary for picks isn't generating a TPE.

The only way a TPE is generated is when you take back less salary then you send out. You use a TPE by taking back salary without sending it out (you can send out picks, cash, or nothing at all, but not salary)

What about the prospect of having a team choose on our behalf then once that player is signed, use the TPE to snag them? Would that work?

Elimination Games

With a Game 4 loss at Miami in the NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder head into Thursdays elimination Game 5 needing a win, which from a Lakers perspective brings to mind a 2012 playoff campaign that produced two Game 5 losses.

The second was a season-ending 106-90 defeat at OKC in which L.A. trailed by only three at the half, and the first an unexpected 102-99 home loss to Denver that was the first such home defeat in a Game 5 since Pau Gasol was acquired from Memphis in 2007.

From the 2007-08 playoff campaign until this season, L.A. had gone 7-0 in Game 5's at STAPLES Center. Thats part of the context around the following comment made by Andrew Bynum ahead of that Game 5 loss to the Nuggets, in which he said close out games like Miami now has against the Thunder can be rather breezy.

Close out games can actually be kinda easy, went the exact quote. Teams tend to fold if you play hard in the beginning, so we want to come out and establish an early lead, and protect it.

That statement was music to the ears of Nuggets coach George Karl, who naturally put the quote in front of his players, despite the fact that from Bynums point of view it was a simple fact.

In fact, in Bynums playoff tenure since the team acquired a 7-foot Spaniard to join him up front, the Lakers had gone 12-1 in close out games, losing only Game 6 in the 2009 Western Semis to Houston amidst a series of Ws at home (7-0) and on the road (5-1), until going 1-2 against the Nuggets on the brink in 2012:

Lakers in Close Out Games:
2008
Round 1 Game 4: LAL 107, DEN 101
Round 2 Game 6: LAL 108, UTA 105
Round 3 Game 5: LAL 100, SAS 92

2009
Round 1 Game 5: LAL 107, UTA 96
Round 2 Game 6: HOU 95, LAL 80
Round 2 Game 7: LAL 89, HOU 70
Round 3 Game 6: LAL 119, DEN 92
Finals Game 5: LAL 99, ORL 86

2010
Round 1 Game 6: LAL 95, OKC 94
Round 2 Game 4: LAL 111, UTA 96
Round 3 Game 6: LAL 111, PHO 103
Finals Game 7: LAL 83, BOS 79

2011
Round 1 Game 6: LAL 98, NOH 80

2012
Round 1 Game 5: DEN 102, LAL 99
Round 1 Game 6: DEN 113, LAL 96
Round 1 Game 7: LAL 96, DEN 87

Thus far in the 2011-12 postseason, the Heat are 3-1 in such close out games, dropping Game 4 at New York but winning Game 5 at home, then Game 6 at Indiana and Game 7 vs. Boston.

Well see how it turns out starting at 6 p.m. on ABC and ESPN radio.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard, Lamar Odom, Brandon Roy, Raymond Felton in L.A.’s Plans?

By IB TIMES STAFF WRITER: Subscribe to IB's RSS feed
June 21, 2012 3:24 PM EDT
The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in a baffling situation.

On one hand, they have the pieces to compete for an NBA title in the 2012-2013 season with one of the best perimeter players in the NBA in Kobe Bryant, and with perhaps the best big-man tandem in recent memory with veteran Pau Gasol and true center Andrew Bynum. The Lakers also have a pair of hard-nosed defenders in Metta World Peace and Matt Barnes, to go along with sharpshooter Steve Blake.

The Lakers offseason could start with bringing Lamar Odom back into the fold.

On the other hand, the Lakers often look sluggish and predictable. The core of Bryant, Gasol, and Bynum has been together for more than four full seasons, and often their shortcomings suggest that changes need to be made. The Lakers also lack a key bench player to create mismatches for opponents since Lamar Odom was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

Upgrading this Lakers roster is easier said than done. The Lakers don't want to inject more money into an already bloated payroll, and don't appear interested in making a complex trade because they will likely fail to receive fair market value for their talent.

NBA Rumors: Lakers Hoping to Pair Up Rashard Lewis, 1st Round Pick with Kobe Bryant?

Submitted by Alex Groberman on Jun 21, 2012
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to make changes this summer, but do those changes include adding Rashard Lewis and trading for a first round draft pick?

Heading into this offseason, Mitch Kupchak and Co. weren’t all that ambiguous about Los Angeles’ long-term and short-term plans. Long-term, the Lakers will be built around their talented -- albeit, injury-prone and immature -- young center, Andrew Bynum. Short-term, Lakers brass will do everything possible -- within reason and in keeping with the new CBA -- to provide Kobe Bryant with some additional support.

And so, because Kupchak had more or less pledged to improve and alter a core roster that’s flamed out in two consecutive postseason runs now, rumors began to fly regarding what precisely he would do. Pau Gasol was the generally agreed upon trade bait; however, who would L.A. use Gasol to bring in? Deron Williams? Andre Iguodala? Kevin Garnett? The speculation has been endless, but it’s always followed one general rule – the incoming player had to be impactful.

Lakers’ Kobe Bryant Has Top-Selling NBA Jersey Internationally
By Erik Matuszewski on June 21, 2012 Tweet Facebook LinkedIn Google Plus 1 Comment

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers had the top-selling National Basketball Association jersey outside the U.S. over the past season, the league said after its first gauge of international sales.

Bryant, who’s won five NBA titles with the Lakers, topped Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, LeBron James of the Miami Heat and Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics. This marks the first year that the NBA has released a list of its most popular international jerseys, based on sales at Adidas AG (ADS) locations outside the U.S. during the 2011-12 season.

Sales figures weren’t released.

Bryant, 33, had the top-selling NBA jersey for the sixth straight year in China, the world’s most populous country. His jersey was also the league’s best-seller in Europe and Latin America, the NBA said.
