Their problem was they did not breakup, so the quality has dropped off considerably.
The Smiths are considered one of the all time greats because they broke up right at their peak. Morrissey has been great solo but he should have called it quits 10 years ago.
If you like the Cure, you might like some of the bands who didn't get huge ala Oasis and maybe Blur during the Brit pop period of the 90s.
Take a look at Pulp and Suede and even Belle & Sebastian. Great bands.
Oasis is great, but I always thought they were really popular during the 1990s and pretty world renown.
I only referenced Oasis and Blur (to a certain extent) manage to hit it big in the 1990s. There was a great number of bands during the 90s Britpop period that did not.
You should check them out - Pulp, Suede, Belle & Sebastian, Supergrass, Stoneroses...
BTW - Radiohead came from that scene but was less associated w/the Britpop wave thanks to the British music media totally ignoring them. They blew up after OK Computer around 1997 which happen to coincide with the end of britpop era. _________________ #11/08/16 America became GREAT again

It does not surprise me that they are not all that popular with people here, after all, most all the people that do not care for them were born after their best releases (1979 - 1982), which are (IMO) Boys Don't Cry, 17 Seconds, Faith, & Pornography.
After that time they became MUCH more commercial and were more of what I call bubblegum-goth.
Having owned somewhere in the neighborthood of 5,000 CD & LP's, I would definately rate them as Top-10 Eighties Band, as for All-Time, probably Top-25...!

Most things are not popular with people here. Like Michael Vick, Khloe Kardashian, Republicans, LeBron James, socks, cats, double rainbows, Little Caesars, rap music, etc... _________________ (❍ᴥ❍ʋ) ʕʘᴥʘʔ (⌐ ͡■ ͜ʖ ͡■) (┛◉Д◉)┛( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽

As someone who was not only born before those releases, but was also a teenager who was lucky enough to discover the power of rock music in the early seventies well before The Cure came out, I have to say that your braggadocio about how many albums and CDs you may have owned simply demonstrates that consumption doesn't equate to meaningful appreciation. Because if you think that after those 5,000 albums The Cure is one of the top 25 bands of ALL TIME, you have clearly been spending your money poorly and missing out on some great music. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Two bands who found a seminal sound for their period. And they deserve their recognition for that. But it's not a sound that has any meaningful longevity in music history. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Where do you rank Radiohead, The Clash, The Who, and Bon Jovi?
Bon Jovi definitely isn't top 25, but the first three seem like locks. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

I would agree which is why this debate is fruitless. The Cure has standing within their genre but lacks the universal, historical longevity of say the Rolling Stones who are undeniably among the greatest. I can argue that Earth Wind and Fire is a greater band than The Cure if we talk about all time greats and begin to span across various genres.
I quite frankly think The Cure is horrible, but it's because I don't enjoy their style of music. I don't know if they' re considered to be from the same genre but i can at least find Depeche Mode to be palatable.
The Cure remind me of Rush, not stylistically of course but rather that they both have cult-like status with a group of hardcore fans. Rush is a bit more extreme in this respect, but you can see what I'm talking about in the posts in this thread.
They are in the 75-125 range in ranking in my opinion. I don't see them being top 75 when you really break it down because you also would have to factor in alternative bands into it... even punk bands... Plus more mainstream rock bands... It would be a fun list to start to compile however. Plus bands that you don't initially think about in lists such as (examples) Bob Marley and the Whalers, Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - etc... because when you think of bands you think of like Led Zep, Guns and Roses, Rolling Stones type bands initially.

First off, you don't know what I think, UNLESS I tell you, and I will tell you owning 5,000 albums EXPANDS your musical tastes to a point where I don't see the Cure as a Top Ten band of all time. I have seen them live twice, once back in the 80's before they went commercial...
Next, I am just tickled pink if you love the Cure and it would not bother me one bit if you listen to them constantly, have their posters all over your room and even dress like Robert Smith on halloween.
Maybe someday, YOU will have 5,000 albums and you can be the one that some young kid tries to be a smart-ass with..

The Cure have so many wonderful songs and have stood the test of time. It is real music, not some flash rock like The Rolling Stones or Aerosmith. The Rolling Stones.....I just don't get the appeal....

ban.......j/k.
You're definitely in the minority. I love the Stones because it's well.....it's good ol plain rock n roll. Something that's been missing from today's music. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you.
