100 posts AND 30 days = much better LG.

That would be even better.

Good idea.

Even better would be if new people couldn't post until their post count was 100.

I also think an addition of minimum length of membership be added.

But instead of 1 month, make it 3 months.

It's a mixed blessing. One of the reasons we resisted a minimum post count before starting a new thread is because spammers would always start new threads. With the minimum post count they won't stop spamming -- they'll just spam in existing threads, which makes it harder for us to clean up.

On new user introductions -- yeah, we're talking about this. A thread just for this purpose is the best solution, not only because it solves the problem but also because it keeps these posts in the same place. It's just a matter of where to put it. There's already such a thread in the Neighborhood thread, but people obviously don't see it.

On long-time lurkers getting a dispensation -- I agree, but like I said, let's establish a baseline first before we tweak it. I can see either 100 posts plus 30 days, OR six months.

Honestly, I think another measure needs to be added where you need a certain number of words in a post for it to count as a post.

There are way too many people padding their numbers by posting one word things like, "Fixed" or "This" or "In before lock" or "Ban".

I'm guilty of it too by saying things like "Hazlo Mitch" but it's probably only like 0.001% of my total posts.

As I see it, if a lurker hasn't even taken the time to register, they really haven't made an effort to be a part of the community and contribute, so I don't really see they should get any dispensation.

30 days at 3.5 posts per day to hit 100 isn't a lot to ask before someone can start threads considering how man y lame threads are started by people with 2 posts who've been on the site for a two hours.

Won't accurately tell you how many posts you have (may be low), but you can click on a post to see your stats to the left of it. I think the discrepancy is because they upgraded the software a while back. The post counts were preserved, but the older posts themselves were wiped and cannot be searched.

Larry-

On the front page, LG is referred to as an "online community". I think that is an accurate description, and the lounge is obviously the main place most members of the community go to interact.

I know some people feel there should be a zero tolerance policy on everything in the lounge being Laker-related, but I think it is good that the mods are making certain exceptions. A blockbuster trade (like DWill or Perkins) that most everyone on LG wants to talk about even though it is only tangentially related to the Lakers is one of those worthy exceptions.

Making a sticky thread at the top of the lounge for new members to introduce themselves and be welcomed would be another worthy exception.

Although on the surface, it's not strictly Laker-related, a welcome thread is the very essence of community, and since everyone in the community is here to talk about the Lakers, it is thus Laker-related.

On a practical level, it seems like very few people regularly go to the LG Neighborhood area, and the Welcome thread is an opportunity lost. A Welcome thread at the top of the lounge would help set a positive tone of friendliness, civility and inclusion that would benefit the atmosphere in all areas of LG.

Think of the thread that the guy from the Navy recently started announcing his first post on LG- nothing but love from the entire community. What goes around comes around, and that can only be good for all of LG.

Having the Welcome thread might also make it easier for a new person, who may be intimidated at the idea of making their first post, feel a little more comfortable by giving them a "safe" place to make their first post. Especially if they see a history of positive interactions in the thread, which there obviously would be.

Also, by interacting with people in a positive way right off the bat, and getting a little info on the person's background, people will tend to treat others with more respect. Although there will always be some bad apples, for the most part, once someone has gotten to know another poster a little bit, they will treat that person in a more friendly manner and with more respect even if they don't agree with him/her on a particular topic, as it is much harder to be dismissive or rude to someone once you've gotten to know them a little bit. It's just human nature.

The more we can put "faces" with usernames, the better the overall atmosphere will be. I think the mods have done a great job in helping create a really good atmosphere on LG by weeding out some of the people who tended to make everything a personal attack or an insult and brought a lot of negativity to the board. Having the Welcome thread at the top of the lounge would also help in creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere.

Finally, the first post in a new Welcome thread could give the very, very basic do's and don'ts of LG for the new people to easily see: treat people with respect, no personal attacks, insults, etc., trade ideas in the trade forum, etc, etc.

There could be a link to the full TOS, but at least this way you kill two birds with one stone by having the basics summarized in the first post in the first thread at the top of the lounge. A Welcome thread would allow the new members to educate themselves on how LG works as well as giving them a place to introduce themselves and by placing it as a sticky at the top of the lounge with a title like "Welcome New Members- Please Read This and Introduce Yourselves", most new people would read it.

Given how much benefit that would be to all of LG, that is well worth a sticky at the top of the lounge IMO.

Cheers to you and the other mods for all your great work on LG.

Sincerely,

BSH

I don't see rookies in the game threads very often-if at all.

Maybe the game threads don't attract their attention. I don't really think it's an issue.
