If anything, the HFPA should look worse in this. Sure, Gervais generated some groans, but guess what -- comedians DO that at times.
If Gervais was making your nominees and business people feel uncomfortable and you figure that's not the job of a "host," fine, don't invite him back if that's your reasoning. Whatever. Your show.
BUT if you're the HFPA and you're trying to come off as a legitimate, entertainment-honoring organization which serves as some sort of arbiter of quality, then why the bleep would you pitch a public tantrum and say you're not inviting him back and not honoring any of his movies?
Congratulations, you HFPA geniuses. You just proved you're as petty, biased, and arbitrary in your "awards" as Gervais and everyone else says you are. BRAVO.

I didn't know about this GG '11 performance until yesterday when it was noted that he would be hosting again.
Then I tubed his GG'11 ... and let me tell you.
Brilliant. The man is brilliant.
Although I 100% believe in God, I didn't take any offense to what he said or has said. Guy's a comedian, and his job is to make the viewers laugh. I think he made the majority of viewers laugh. (bleep) the 25 celebs who care only about their own ass, he gave importance more to the millions watching.
And it was brilliant. Comedic gold. |

It was even more hilarious to watch it play out live. The comedic tension was inescapable. It's one thing to go up and tell jokes and make people laugh comfortably. It's quite another to set things one edge by leading an audience to the point here they can't wait for the next joke, but they may shudder at what it may be. Even the targets of his biting comedy who were able to have their moment with the mic rose to the task and fired back in similar fashion.
I knew he'd back for the next one as soon as everyone couldn't stop talking about the show the second it ended.
