i wanna be 9 years old again so I wont have to worry about all this (bleep) spending, being torn between spending time w/ my gf's family or my family, not being able to decorate one (bleep) tree because of work, having to deal with rude people at the stores, not being able to watch "a charlie brown christmas" or "rudolph the red nose reindeer" on CBS. So, that's what I want. I want to be 9 years old again. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you. |

I hear you loud and clear. Loud and clear. Best decision my wife and I ever made was to stop travelling at Christmas, and tell our families that we would no longer be switching off visiting them every year. We still see them, but it's on our terms, not something we're expected to do. Great to wake up in your own home on Christmas morning and watch your kids enjoy it. _________________ I got a fever....and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Materialistic:
Just enough money to pay off my debts and bring me to zero so I can start fresh again.
Non-materialistic:
1. My dad to be healthy and to be able to enjoy his upcoming retirement. (Just found out that he has a weak muscle in his heart and he's only 64). |

Out of curiosity, who are your favorite authors?
And speaking of authors, I'm trying to take Thoreoux's advice, where I get more of what I want by wanting less. But if I must wish for something, I wish for an end to starvation and disease. It's hard to get jacked up about things when so many are dying...but I'll stop now with my depressing commentary. _________________ “We must always take sides. mostly contemporaries ... pretty much all of Alex Garland's books and some of John Le Carre. Also some of Michael Connelly's works are good too. Besides them, I also like Kurt Vonnegut. The man is profanely bile and coarse in his views. Right now I'm reading Tolstoy's "The Kingdom of God is Within You." He wrote this in the late 1800s, and it's insane how it could easily apply to what's going on today, in particular, the Iraq war. I haven't gotten into Henry David Thoreau yet, but I'll check it out sooner than later. I know some of his views have parallel similarities to that of Tolstoy's.
My favorite of all time though is Gregory David Roberts. He's only written one novel so far called "Shantaram," but it's the first of a trilogy. Possibly 4. I've read it twice, and I'm planning on reading it again sometime soon. It's F'n amazing. It's the most inspiring piece of literature I've ever come across. No joke. _________________ NBA referees are a detriment to the integrity and essence of the game of basketball. To tell the truth, I'm giving myself the best possible present by getting nothing, or next to nothing. My family and I have been living way below our means for 3 years, not buying much in the way of luxuries and actively attacking our expenses (I've become quite a decent chef since we stopped eating out). The goal was to save up for a house, but a side effect of that is I now have saved up living expenses to cover us for about a year of unemployment. Of course, actually doing that would mean starting all over on the house fund, but there's nothing like the freedom in knowing I could quit or get fired at any time and not have my family suffer for it.
So this year for Channukah, I'm looking at:
Material: A thoughtful gift not to exceed $50 + a custom book of coupons for free services from the wife (not those kinds of services ).
Non-material: Peace of mind.
Of course if someone else is buying, I wouldn't kick season tickets out of bed. _________________ Nerd rock in progress.

My top 5(presents) list:
1.) A new laptop
2.) A subscription to EVO, CAR or Top Gear Magazine
3.) Gift Certificates at Best Buy and other clothing stores.
4.) Automotive tools
5.) Some video games?
My non-materialistic list:
1.) A job or internship with Primedia magazine
2.) A mentor
3.) For my family flying in ... that everyone comes in and we can actually have a reunion.
4.) Happiness for everyone, not just friends and family.
5.) That my gf enjoys her Eurotrip of 2 weeks and comes back happier than ever.
