Vogel and his staff are going to coach the All-Star game for Team LeBron.......and deserve it. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Vogel game plan was plain to see. Harass Doncic and their guards and push them into the paint, then our bigs would face guard their bigs so that our forwards and guards can rebound and push the pace. Because our forwards like LeBron and Kuzma are much better playmakers than their forwards. GREAT game plan except our bigs were overzealous pushing their bigs off rebounds and got a lot of fouls. Still - excellent plan - thinking outside the box and playing to our personnel strengths with the LeBron and Kuzma tandem. Luke played this a lot too with worse personnel and but I felt great to see Vogel not having an ego about this. |

Good stuff. I hope he saw some ways to get Kuzma some shots in both Kuzma's and the game's flow more. |

I'm liking coach Joe Gatto a.k.a Frank Vogel now. I have to say, I was iffy when we got him but now I see that we got the right guy for this crew. |

Vogel and his staff are solid. The one missing piece is an offensive savant taking JKidd's spot lol. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

There's a few things that Vogel is not getting as much credit for:
1. That play time and time again with KCP/Avery/Danny with Javale and Dwight that includes a handoff in the free throw line and ends up as a lob. We get about 8-12 points a game from that play alone, if not more.
2. While he does have strict rotations in terms of time frames, he sometimes veers off course when he realizes that a certain rotation is working well and leaves the unit out there until there's a slip up.
3. His use of timeouts. Luke would use all our timeouts right away to the point we were down to one or two timeouts with 5 minutes left in the 4th. It feels like Vogel, on the other hand, knows how to manage them and when to use them to prevent big runs but also allow the players to sort of "figure it out" if the run is still in its beginning stages. Basically a good middle ground between Luke and Phil. |

More I like about the coach
- Learning from other coaches, using the zone to break rhythm of the team.
- Seems to have control of the squad, don't see complaining for not playing and players seems ready when called upon. |

Smart decision by putting in cook and Daniels when we down big,
Bad decision not putt ing Dwight back to close out the game.
Vuecvic 3 could’ve been contested if Dwight was in,
Fultz probably couldn’t get that easy layup
Gordon would’ve probably been fouled by Dwight or let go.
With game on the line, if we don’t have AD, Dwight is the next best thing |

our starting lineup can get bogged down like crazy with the lack of shooting around Lebron/AD yet Vogel often will stick with that lineup no matter what for 6+ minutes at the start of each half.
He needs to be more willing to take sub out players who are not hitting their open shots in a given game with established shooters...

Great read.
Quote: | "His communication skills have been on point when it comes to the top two players," says veteran forward Jared Dudley. "He knows the temperature of the team, knows when [James and Davis] need time off, when to rely on them, when to get on them in a film session. Everything he's doing says 'veteran coach.'" |
He's doing a good job handling the relationships right now. That's a big part of coaching and I love it. I think he's doing a good job regarding on the court items, but still room for improvement. |

I like that Frank understands his strengths are communication, being the leading voice on the bench, defense .... and builds around that. He probably realizes his offense is not the most creative of best stuff out there, so he leans a lot more on Lebron and others on that end. That is good. I was watching his interview in the summer and he was asked what he learned over the season he was off coaching, he said without hesitation, offense. He had to adjust his offense from Indiana. So what we are seeing now is a team that defends and has that Indiana Pacers team mindset, but with a more competent offense. We are elite on offense as well in the O rating. However what it will come down to for Frank, he really has to find a way to get Lebron to stay aggressive on offense. It may be Kidd who does that. But someone has to tell Lebron that for this current season we need Lebron to be more in attack mode than he has been. Thats how they get across the finish line, and beat Clippers-Bucks. |

FYI:
I found an old article about Vogel when he was front-runner for the Memphis job. It gives a little positive insight and is a good flashback read to boot.

This guy reminds me of Phil Jackson coaching the Albany Patroons.. Why? Phil built pure team camaraderie even going so far as to negotiate pay based on who had family and other responsibilities getting more pay to help family
Jackson even drove the damn team bus.
Vogel seems to know a lot about getting most out of his players and putting them in positions to succeed and they cheer each other on repeatedly - really a joy to see and read about
*While looking for some info about Phil and the Patroons came across a nice article about Phil
https://www.splicetoday.com/sports/phil-jackson-s-amazing-journey
Quote: | Though his methods were unorthodox, Jackson quickly achieved coaching success. After a slow start, the Albany Patroons came together and won the 1984 CBA Championship. Jackson went on to coach in the Puerto Rican league where fans tossed fruit, batteries and dead chickens on the court. His inability to speak Spanish taught him to rely on silence and body language.
Jackson sought a job in the NBA. Invariably he was turned down. His counterculture reputation scared away potential employers... |

Vogel needs an offensive guru like Phil had in Tex. I don't think JKidd is that guy lol. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

Vogel's philosophy on defending elite players Quote: | While many teams facing James Harden and the Rockets have to weigh how far to go away from their own defensive strengths to use assorted “junk defenses” against Harden, Lakers coach Frank Vogel said among the strengths of his team has been to game-plan and adjust for opponents. |
Quote: | "Part of why we’re good is we scheme,” Vogel said. “We do adjust. It is not just one plan for every opponent. We look at what the opponent does well, try to take away their strengths, make them play to their weaknesses. This isn’t different in that regard. They’re just more extreme with their strengths.” |
Quote: | “Elite offensive players always are the most difficult to prepare for,” Vogel said. “The support system that teams put around elite offensive players is what you evaluate as much as the player himself, how much help can you bring?
“In a playoff series you would have more time to lock in to all the nuances of how they play, and you are afforded the luxury of being more creative, working on a unique scheme potentially than you would with one day of preparation in the regular season.” |
I got a man-crush on Vogel. |

Favorite "chess match" last night was D'Antoni putting Tucker at the 5, giving Harden more room with Dwight on the perimeter. What does Vogel do? Takes him out for KCP and has LeBron at the 5 now with 4 shooters. Then they spam this ball screen knowing theres no rim protection.

Note to Vogel:
Don’t play rondo and lebron together.especially don’t play AD , lebron and rondo together, there is.no spacing for AD to go to work.
If you have to play rondo, play him with AD and 3 shooters(no Dwight)
Spacing is so poor with rondo on the floor |
