Sources: Angels, Trout near $430M extension
Quote: | Star center fielder Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels are finalizing the largest contract in professional sports history, a 12-year deal worth more than $430 million that will smash previous records and could keep the greatest player of his generation with the Angels for the remainder of his career, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN on Tuesday. |

Feels like the Angels are getting a bargain somehow lol. But this shows that Trout is comfortable in Anaheim, and from his perspective, I understand not wanting to turn down that kind of guaranteed coin. |

Sources confirm: #Yankees close to deal with free-agent left-hander Gio Gonzalez, as @JonHeyman reported. Per source, will be minor-league contract with $3M base if he is in majors. Includes out on April 20 and additional incentives based on games started.

really surprised the best deal Gio could get was a minor league contract and only a $3 Million base if he makes the roster. |

Oh yeah....he knows he will be living in Southern California for the next 12 years and will have nearly half Billion dollars deposited into his bank account during that time. Not sure a man could ask for much more. |

Good for Trout. Good for baseball. Good for the Angels. Good for their fans--though maybe a mixed bag when seat prices, food, parking and beer prices are considered. _________________ "A metronome keeps time by using a Ringo" |

This is the one player in baseball where you see that $430 mil figure and don't even bat an eye over it. If he hit the open market he probably could've even gotten 450. So smart move by the Angels to lock him up now. And good for him. _________________ |

Angels win the offseason. They keep the one player that gets people to continue going to see Angels games and other teams dreams of acquiring Mike Trout (Dodgers, Phillies) die as well. |

Good for Trout, although I guess he isn’t too concerned about being a winner, just a guy that puts up great numbers while consistently disappointing in clutch situations and ultimately failing to pull his team into the postseason, failing spectacularly when he does. Good for him |

Is it weird that the Mariners and Athletics are playing "real" games in Tokyo....then will return to the US to play more spring training games before their regular season continues? Does this happen every year? |

He can't do everything by himself. My guess is he's happy in his current situation and probably figures they will eventually build a winner. Plus if the Angels keep him the entire duration of the contract he will spend 20 years with the team. Not many players in sports have that much longevity with one team. |

He hasn’t been in many clutch situations lately. |

Yeah, they play the games in Japan early so that the players can get back to the U.S. well before the season starts and so they can kind of re-acclimate back to things. |

The Brewers are talking to Craig Kimbrel. If they get him, say, on a 1-year deal, their bullpen has the potential to be absolutely insane. Jeffress, Knebel, Hader, Kimbrel...my goodness. (Although Jeffress has had shoulder fatigue this spring and will start the season on the injured list.) And Brandon Woodruff could end up in their postseason bullpen too, should they get that far.
I was hoping he ended up back in the AL, but it seems like the interested teams are probably from the NL (Brewers, Cubs, Nats, Braves have been connected to him). If he really can be had on a 1-year deal, the Dodgers should get involved and figure out what to do with Jansen and Kimbrel. Remember, they were going to trade for Chapman about 3 years ago before pulling the plug due to the domestic violence stuff. |

Brewers talks with Craig Kimbrel are pretty serious I hear. They already had the best pen last year, so this would be strengthening a strength @ken_rand @ByRobertMurray 1st mentioned |

It will be hard for the Dodgers to make it back to the World Series this year. Unless some of our players have great years it will be hard to make up for the losses in the off season. |

It's hard to make it to the WS any year. Last yr was pretty difficult with Seager going down and starting the year off like 22-35 or something. |

White Sox give Eloy Jimenez a 6-year, $42MM deal before he has played a game in the majors. By far the largest such commitment ever. They had sent him down on March 12, but now they can presumably end the charade of having him "work on some things" in the minors and can have him start the year as their everyday right fielder.
Correction: it's actually a longer deal than that...

Eloy Jimenez’s deal when finalized will be 8 years, $77.5 million. The deal includes a $2.5 million signing bonus. #WhiteSox |

Yup. Making it 2 years in a row is extremely difficult. 3 years? That's way too much to ask. Last team to do that was the Yanks and they three-peated. |

Yankees made it 4 straight years from 1998-2001, but they lost to Arizona in 2001 after winning the other 3. They were in it 6 out of 8 years from 1996 to 2003....winning 4. Before that, I think the Oakland A's was the last team to go to 3 straight from 1988 to 1990....only winning in 1989 against the Giants in the earthquake series.....Dodgers beat them in 1988 and the Reds beat them in 1990. |
