Compared to Joel Meyers, Bill is alright.
Hope we can get a younger guy who's knowledgeable and passionate.

Yeah. Spero dedas was perfect until he left us. His radio calls were much better than the tv calls by Joel. Wish we offered him the TV gig.
Hopefully we can find someone like joe Davis

Of those that we've had since after Chick passed, I'd rank them as follows:
1. Spero Dedes - clearly had the skill, passion and energy to be a great long-term announcer. I also hated how he wanted to take games off to do NFL. Lakers should have been his #1 priority period. Disappointed it didn't work out.
2. Paul Sunderland - safe pick to come after Chick. Sucked it didn't work out - but I don't think anybody who would have come immediately after Chick, no matter how good they were, would have survived.
3. Bill MacDonald - I hated him when he first came on, but he's grown on me. He calls the game, has decent energy, seems aware of pop culture related elements of the game, and can banter with Stu (who is a personality of his own).
4. Joel Meyers - Was good at his job, but just didn't have good chemistry with Stu, and generally seemed like he was always trying to prove he belonged and came off as somewhat of a jerk to me. Don't miss him now that he's left.
5. John Ireland - has come a long way, but still has a long way to go. Too focused on the social and pop culture element, too obviously biased towards the Lakers and a more obvious company man than even Bill.

A good play-by-play for the Lakers has to be somebody who understands the game today, can speak a language the common fan understands, is personable, can relate to Stu, and overall seems to demonstrate the Lakers are his priority but can still be "unbiased" enough about the team. Bill checks all those boxes. Is he great, no. Is he horrible, no. He's just there. Doesn't add or remove anything from the game. Good enough, and I doubt Lakers care to spend more money on on-air talent when they already know they're the biggest draw in town regardless.

Bro, I was thinking the same.
An NBA version of Joe Davis.

Bill McDonald has grown on me. I think he's gotten better. I like his enthusiasm and how he seems like a great guy.

Spero Dedes staying would've probably been the best option, as he has even more talent, but if I'm not mistaken he's from the NYC area and he left partly to become the Knicks' play-by-play man, and also because the Knicks would allow him to also do NFL games.

Didnโ€™t Spero leave for the same reason that Meyers did, the organization wouldnโ€™t let them also do football?

It is all about $$$$, simple as that.
Lakers sometimes are too stubborn to make changes. Building a new arena, find a better pair of announcers, these are the moves that could bring in more money for the Team. As fans, sometimes it is better for fresh blood. Stu is great, but 30+ years is just too much.
Spero was wanted for a reason because he is good at his job. I donโ€™t remember any invitations for billy mac to do NFL games

I liked Joel-y

But it doesnโ€™t matter cos neither Bill nor Stu are going anywhere so Iโ€™m content to periodically complain in the game threads and keep it moving

I donโ€™t know much about him but I do like him whenever heโ€™s on AccessSportsnet.

For my part, have never been able to stomach Stu at all. I enjoy Lakers basketball despite him. Anyone else in the broadcasts is entirely secondary to me trying to mentally filter out Stu's every word.

When I was growing up, I appreciated Stu taking time to teach or explain the rules of the game. I'm sure it gets annoying for most who may already know them.

Bill is the worst. I'm happy I no longer live in LA so I can listen to the opposing team's broadcasters rather than having to suffer listening to Billy Mac.
